An Encounter at a Wedding - Adam meets someone new after his divorce
Adam had to go to a wedding but didn't want to. He wasn't even sure why he'd been invited. The groom must have wanted him there. They were roommates in college and had remained fairly good friends, although they didn't talk much. He didn't even know about the engagement.
A wedding was the last place Adam wanted to be. He'd been depressed after his divorce and hadn't been out with a woman since then. He didn't know anyone to take with him. A wedding without a date was torture. But the groom had invited him, so he was stuck. He'd go stag and leave as quickly as he could.
He skipped the service. A wedding service would bring back too many memories he wasn't ready to deal with, but he did go to the reception. It was in a huge old, three-story restored house, now used for parties and weddings.
Adam found a table near the back. He sat there depressed, watching people laughing and dancing. He regretted being there, especially by himself.
He wanted to find the groom, congratulate him, and then leave. He spotted the bride but not the groom. A bridesmaid headed in his direction. She was young and beautiful. He'd heard that the bridesmaids wore ugly dresses so the bride would stand out as the most beautiful woman at the wedding. If that's what they were going for, they blew it. The woman approaching him had a light blue, floor-length, chiffon dress with a flowy skirt and a deep V-neck. As she walked, her skirt opened on the side exposing her long slender leg. As she got closer, Adam realized that she wasn't just coming in his direction, she was coming towards him.
She stopped in front of him, put her hand out, and said, "Dance with me." The band was playing a nice slow song. He stood up, took her hand, and led him to the dance floor.
As they danced, she asked, "Can you tell me something?"
"Anything," he said, entranced by her beauty.
"Why did Patty dump you?"
Patty was his ex-wife. "Where did you hear that?" he asked, confused at being jolted back into the reality of his life.
"Bridesmaids talk."
"What? I'm confused."
"You skipped the service, didn't you?" She laughed. "You're not supposed to do that."
"You caught me," he confessed. "Do I know you?"
"Not yet," she said sweetly. "So, you don't know your ex-wife, Patty, is the maid of honor?"
"No," he said in a panicked voice. "I've got to get out of here."
She held him there and asked, "Why? She knows you're here; she pointed you out to us. If you leave, she wins."
"Are you here as her spy?"
"No," she laughed. "When I saw you, I thought you were cute. I don't have a date, so I thought I'd introduce myself. Hi, I'm Jena, the bride's sister. I hate being at weddings alone. Will you be my date?"
"Would I rather dance with a gorgeous woman or sit alone watching other people have fun? I'd love to be your date, and may I say you look stunning."
"Thank you, you're such a gentleman," she said. "It doesn't bother you that Patty's here?"
"No, but I don't want to talk to her," he said and paused. "Did she say anything about our divorce?"
"I'm not your spy either and I don't know much anyway," she said. "Patty whined about you and the divorce at the bachelorette party last night, but I didn't listen. I hate it when women whine like that."
"Then how do you know I didn't dump her?"
"She's here with a date and you've just met your date." She smiled enchantingly.
"I guess you already know, I'm Adam."
"Pleased to meet you, Adam. It's nice to put a name to a handsome face. I've heard about you for a long time and I'm glad we finally met. You do know your ex-wife and my sister have been friends forever?"
"I knew they were friends in college, but I didn't know they stayed in touch, she never talked about your sister. I wouldn't have come if I'd known. I don't even know why I was invited. The groom was my roommate in college, but we haven't talked a lot recently. I thought that he invited me."
"You may be a clerical error," she said.
"Excuse me?"
"My sister has been planning this wedding for so long that you may have been on the list because of Patty and never got taken off. I, for one, am glad you're here. I know Patty wasn't expecting you. The look on her face when she saw you was priceless." She laughed in a way that made it seem like she enjoyed everything. It was infectious and he found himself laughing with her.
"I guess I shouldn't have come."
"But then I wouldn't have seen Patty's face, and you wouldn't have met me," Jenna said with a sassy smile. She had a wealth of smiles, and they were all genuine. There was nothing pretentious about her.
"That would have been a shame." Adam pulled her a little closer.
"I didn't listen to her whine at the bachelorette party, but I've listened to them talk for years. I'm a few years younger than my sister and I was curious about the things she and Patty talked about. You know, boys and sex. They were in college, and I was a senior in high school, still a sweet young virgin. The closet in my room shared a wall with my sister's closet, and the walls were thin. I fixed her door so that it wouldn't close. That way I heard everything that happened in her room. I spent hours in my closet listening to her talk to Patty."
"Talking wasn't all I heard. Sometimes when our parents were gone for the night, my sister would bring a guy home. I listened while they had sex. They were loud, and I hear everything they did."
"You sat in your closet and spied on your sister? You were a naughty little girl."
"I still am a naughty girl. You're trying to figure out how old I am, aren't you? I'm twenty and about to finish my second year in college."
"At the time, I was eighteen. I'm sure you can imagine what else I did in that closet while my sister was having sex." Adam looked into her eyes. "Well, I had to do something while I sat there," she said and laughed. "Do I shock you?"
"I suspect you like to shock people," he said chuckling. "But no, you didn't shock me, you just gave me some impure thoughts."
She put her head on his shoulder and said, "Mmm, you smell nice." He pulled her closer.
"Oh, I can feel what those impure thoughts did to you. I'm sorry about that," she whispered in his ear; her warm breath tickled.
"Whispering in my ear is not quenching my impure thoughts."
He moved his hand a few inches lower on her back. It wasn't indecent but it was low.
"Remember when I called you a gentleman?"
"Yes."
"I now think you may be a seducer and a cad."
