Chapter 2. September
The Tuesday after Labor Day, Kristie walked to the Student Health Center after her nine-thirty Biology lab. She had decided to take Jenna's advice, even if Jenna had been a little condescending in giving it. It made sense to be prepared, even though she wasn't sure she was ready to have sex yet.
She remembered the time she had tried with Billy, after they had aced their finals and were euphoric with finally being done with high school. Their friend group of seniors had gone to a park to celebrate with beers (not yet legal for them, but not too hard to obtain). She had asked Billy to take a walk with her, and once underway she had taken his hand in hers, walking close together so she would brush up against him occasionally. She had hoped that he would get her message.
The memory was suddenly real to her, like she was there.
Once they were out of view of the others, she let go of his hand and slipped her arm around his waist. After only a moment's hesitation he did the same with her, and they walked with their bodies softly pressed together. They found a secluded nook, just at dusk. It seemed the right time and place for them to finally kiss.
She returned his initial chaste kiss with enthusiasm. Then he tried for more, slipping his tongue between her closed lips. It felt good, it felt right, so she parted her lips and traded tongues with him. Then his hand was on her breast, and oh my god did that feel good! She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on.
The grass under their feet was tall and dry, the spring air still warm from the day. Somehow they found themselves lying in the grass, still kissing, Billy sliding his hand under her clothes, warm flesh to warm flesh. It was what she wanted. But what ifโ
What if he's not prepared with protection? What if it ends badly, for whatever reason? What if that ruins our friendship? What if...a multitude of imagined things that could go wrong crowded her mind.
She pulled back, her heart pounding.
"Billy, I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't mean to lead you on, but I don't think I'm ready for this."
She saw the disappointment in his eyes.
"Well, you did lead me on," he said.
"I know. I'm so sorry."
They got back to their feet. She put an arm around him again.
"Billy, I do care for you. You know that, right? I just don't know right now. I'm afraid to get it wrong. I mean, it's weird when it's with someone you already know. Do you know what I mean?"
"I guess so."
"Geez, you would. That's probably why we're both still virgins."
"Yeah, you're probably right" he said. "Can I just give you a hug?"
"Sure. Hugs are great."
So they had shared a quick but tender embrace and then walked back toward the others.
At the Center they were friendly and responsive to her inquiry. She was asked into a small consultation room, where an assistant gave her a five-minute sex talk, about contraception, prevention of disease, avoiding and dealing with abuse, and emotional issues. Although she already knew about those things, she listened and nodded at the appropriate moments.
Then a doctor entered and instructed Kristie in the correct use of the oral contraceptive she was about to prescribe. Script in hand, Kristie followed the assistant to the Center's pharmacy, where it was filled on the spot. She left with the little case of pills in her purse, along with instructional pamphlets that repeated the same advice she had been given.
Walking back across campus, she was considering hitting the student union for a bite to eat before her afternoon class when she thought she recognized the figure who was approaching from the other direction. It was a guy, not a bad-looking one too. He drew closer, and it clicked. He was Brad, from her English literature class. He recognized her also, and spoke first as they came within social distance.
"Hi, uh...Kristie, right?"
"Yeah, and you're Brad, right? We're in English lit."
"Yeah. How do you like that reading list?"
"At least we have the semester to get through it."
She shook her blonde curls out of her face to give a better presentation. Brad was two inches taller than she, with dark brown hair cut neat, and piercing blue eyes. No, not bad looking at all.
He said. "I was just going to head to the union for a sandwich or something."
"I was thinking about the same thing."
"So, uh, would you care to join me? I'd enjoy your company."
"Sure, let's do it."
They chatted over burgers, the noontime crowd bustling around them. Brad was charming and reasonably interesting, and he seemed interested in her. By the time they parted they had a date for Friday's Cinema Series showing, downstairs from where they were, the big auditorium on the lower level. This week they were screening
Double Indemnity
.
Kristie considered this to have been a successful day as she headed home after her last class.

Patrick and Jenna were taking a momentary break from their make-out session, lounging on Patrick's bed. Being Jenna's boyfriend was great, he thought, but having her living right across the narrow hallway was dangerous. The temptation to just spend every free minute in the sack was powerful, but they both had school work to keep up with, and Patrick had his part-time job taking up more time. If they flunked out of school, it would be scant consolation to think 'at least we got laid a lot'.
But they could take a few minutes most days to keep the heat going between them, while saving their major loving for the weekend. It usually ended with Jenna taking out his cock and stroking the hard shaft until it erupted, which turned her on so much that when Patrick then slipped his hand into her panties and rubbed her pussy, it took only a minute to bring her to a satisfying climax.
Right now they had finished a deep, soulful kiss and were just resting in the glory of it for a moment.
"Sweetie," Jenna said, "I'm absolutely not saying you aren't the best, but did you ever think about being with other people too?"
"That's a thing?" he asked, feigning innocence. Of course he knew.
"Well," she said, "I went out with Gary once last summer. He told me that he and Tania were in an open relationship, so they could date other people and still be together."
"So, did you take advantage of that?"
