Mary, Carla's best friend from high school, called her on Friday afternoon.
Mary said, "Hi, I came into town for the weekend to visit with you." Carla was surprised to hear from her. She hadn't seen her for almost a year.
"I wished you'd called first. I'm going out of town for a few days. Do you remember Barbara?"
"Vaguely," Mary said.
"Well, her father died. I'm going to the funeral and then spending the weekend at home."
"I didn't think you'd go to the funeral."
"Damn, can I stay at your place while you're gone? I'm a bit short of funds."
"I'd love that except that I just moved in with my boyfriend, Danny."
"I heard something about a boyfriend but didn't know you were living together. Are you two in love?" Mary asked.
"Yeah, we are. It's nice to have a man like Danny."
"Shoot, I didn't plan this very well. Do you know any place I could stay that's inexpensive?" Mary asked. "I'm a bit strapped for cash."
"You know, why don't you just stay at my place? It's a one-bedroom apartment but Danny won't mind sleeping on the couch for a few days."
"Are you sure?"
"It'll be fine. I trust Danny. I'll tell him to expect you."
After they hung up, Mary smiled to herself.
Carla had met Danny at the beginning of the school year, and they had been together ever since. They stayed at one of their places every night and after a while, it seemed silly to pay rent for two apartments, so Carla moved into Danny's place.
Carla texted Mary the address and tried to call Danny but he didn't answer. She left a voicemail and texted him, telling him what had happened. He was sure to get the message before Mary arrived. She described Mary to him, told him to be nice to her, and told him to give Mary the bed and to sleep on the couch.
It had been a long time since Carla had thought about Mary. They had been best friends since elementary school. Besides Carla, Mary's only friends in high school were a few geeks who played Dungeons and Dragons and hung out at the arcade.
Carla hadn't seen her since June after high school graduation. Mary's mother took her on vacation before college and strangely, she'd left without saying goodbye to Carla.
Mary wasn't popular in high school mostly because of her looks. She was grossly overweight, had bad acne, was flat-chested, and wore thick horn-rimmed glasses. She was still a virgin the last time Carla saw her; she'd never been kissed. Mary didn't go out in high school except when Carla insisted that she go with her to a party.
Carla blossomed in high school. She grew tall and good-looking with big breasts and wavy blonde hair. When she turned eighteen early in her senior year, she became one of the popular girls. She lost her virginity over Thanksgiving break and started going to parties with plenty of alcohol and drugs. She liked attention from boys and enjoyed sex. By the second half of her senior year, she went out with lots of boys and had sex with most of them. By summer, she had become a bit of a slut. After a few drinks, she was up for anything. She rarely stopped at a few drinks and would often not remember much the next day.
It had been close to a year since Carla had seen Mary, but she figured she hadn't changed much; she probably was still a virgin and un-kissed. Since Carla was hot, and Mary was not, she had no concerns about Danny being interested in her. Danny at times had a wandering eye around pretty women, but Carla knew he wouldn't cheat on her, especially with a woman as unattractive as Mary. Danny was way out of Mary's league.

Danny had neglected to charge his phone, so he didn't get Carla's text message or voicemail until he got home. He listened to the voicemail first and it said that Mary would be there around 5:00 and was staying with him for the weekend. It was 4:30 now. His phone rang and it was Carla. She repeated most of the voicemail.
"Danny, she's fat, not very pretty, and shy but I want you to entertain her and be very nice to her. She was my best friend in high school. Don't just leave her alone at our place." Carla was worried that Danny might go out with the guys and leave Mary alone.
"Have you ever known me not to be nice to anyone?" he asked slightly insulted.
"No."
"You might need to worry about me around another woman though. You'll be gone a long time and I have needs," he said jokingly.
"I'll be back as soon as I can to take care of those needs and I'm not worried about you and Mary. You'd never do anything with an ugly duckling like her."
After they hung up, Danny started cleaning the apartment. He was a little pissed at Carla for dumping her friend on him. He'd planned to go out with his friends and drink until he passed out. That wasn't something he'd done much since Carla had moved in. Now he was stuck with this ugly duckling girlfriend of hers.
But he couldn't be too mad at her. Doing favors for each other was something you did when living with somebody. He was happy that Carla had moved in with him. She was everything he wanted in a woman, and he loved her.
He began changing the sheets on the bed when he heard a knock on the door. When he opened it, he saw a drop-dead gorgeous woman standing there. She was slender, stacked, and had big blue eyes. Her pretty face was framed by long auburn hair, and she wore a blue button-up blouse, high heels, and a short, pleated skirt. He had no idea who she was.
He smiled at her like she was naked and said, "Can I help you?"
"Are you Danny?"
"Why yes I am. And who might you be?"
"I'm Mary, Carla's friend. She did tell you I was coming, didn't she?"
He blinked his confusion and said, "Yes, of course she did. Come in. I'm Danny."
"I know."
"Of course. I was expecting...You don't look like what Carla...come in."
"I am in."
Mary didn't expect what she saw either. A mutual friend had told her that Danny was cute, but he was much better looking than she described. He was tall, handsome, and in remarkable shape. His white t-shirt stretched tightly over his chest showing he had nice muscles without looking like a bodybuilder. That and his piercing blue eyes and sexy smile made him much more than cute.
Mary said, "It's been a while since Carla and I have seen each other. I talked to her on the phone this morning, and she said you'd be glad to have me. I mean, that it would be OK if I spent a few nights with you."
"Can I get you something to drink?" Danny asked.
"Sure, what do you have?"
Danny thought and said, "Beer, tequila, and water."
"How about a shot of tequila with a beer back."
"A woman after my own heart. I'll join you."
He knew he was making a fool out of himself but couldn't stop. The woman standing here was no ugly duckling. Crap, she was still standing in front of the open door, holding a suitcase.
Danny closed the door, grabbed her suitcase, and asked her to sit. When she sat on the low upholstered chair, her skirt rode up her shapely legs.
"Danny, you can put my suitcase down," she said. "Do you mind if I take off my shoes? These heels are killing me."
"No feel free. Take off anything you want." Danny wanted to crawl into a hole. "If you'd like to change, the bathroom is over there."
