I have hiked and backpacked the more deserted areas of the Sierra mountains in the Lake Tahoe area for several years now. In 2018, I retired after my wife passed away. That is when I moved to the area and initially tried hiking the most well known trails. It is extraordinarily beautiful here. Nature at its finest. But I found the almost constant stream of people that I would run into on the trails to be a real mood killer. Rude, selfish and unprepared are just a few of the perfectly apt descriptions for most of these wanna-be hikers and backpackers. They were often loud and inconsiderate, didn't give a shit about nature and many acted like the entirety of the outdoors was their personal space. If even one percent of them had ever heard of the ten essentials, I would be shocked. So after several unpleasant experiences with the masses, I opted to move deeper into the back country.
Orienteering has always been a passion of mine. Give me a topo map and a compass and I can work my way through an area with ease so the places I hike now are much harder to access. One has to want to be in these places. They are seldom on the way to anywhere. As a result, I find very few, if any, people when I am out here. I essentially have these beautiful, pristine wilderness areas to myself...until last Thursday.
I began this trip by parking in a small lot on the western shore of Lake Tahoe just a few miles south of Tahoma. It was a bit early in the season so the crowds were still thin in populated areas. I headed west on the General Creek trail which begins at an elevation of roughly 5,800 ft. It is an easy slog for the first two miles but don't let that fool you. The scenery is fantastic. Craggy peaks in the distance, beautiful conifer forest all around you and a roaring creek to keep you company as you walk. It is a beautiful spot.
The grade picks up after 2 miles or so as you climb toward the junction with the Lost Lake Trail. I took a left at the trail junction and headed south toward Lost Lake. This trail borders the Desolation Wilderness and offers exceptional scenery all along its 2 mile length. Occasionally you can spot remnants of a long ago decommissioned jeep trail. It makes the walking a bit easier and often offers glimpses of wildlife. On this day, I was surprised to see what appeared to be recent vehicle tracks on the old jeep trail. I passed that off as being caused by some over zealous logger looking for a giant Douglas Fir.
As I climbed higher and approached the lake, I noticed fresh vehicle tracks again. That seemed odd since this area is so isolated and that old jeep trail is in very rough shape in some places. But like I said, probably just a logger. I rounded a curve in the trail and a beam of light struck me in the face. WTF?? I looked closer and there through the trees was large 4x camper van with the sunlight reflecting off the body. What kind of asshole would bring THAT thing way out here? My mind raced through the possibilities. A drug deal in progress? An abandoned stolen vehicle? As I considered the situation, I became increasingly uneasy. Was I in a dangerous spot? Should I pull out my pistol? Was this gonna be a day I might regret forever?
I decided on a more stealthy approach to the lake from where I was. I dropped my backpack, pulled out my 45, tucked it into my jacket pocket and began to work my way toward the lake. Not too far ahead was a very large boulder which bordered the south end of the lake. If I could make my way up there, I should be able to see what was going on without being discovered. I walked lightly through the forest, stepping on rocks where I could. When I reached the base of the boulder, I could hear a voice, or was it voices? It wasn't clear but it was definitely female. Now I was really confused. Was she alone? Was I being watched by her partner? My heart was racing. I worked my way up the boulder to near the top to a spot that offered a good bit of cover. I eased my face around the outcrop until I could see the edge of the lake. I slowly leaned out farther until my eyes settled on a figure in the lake about 100 feet away. Holy shit! She was naked! She was talking to a camera that was set up on a tripod just on the edge of the lake. I focused more closely on the woman and almost fell over. It was Hannah Straight, the YouTube personality who films outdoor adventures around the west. But she doesn't undress for her YouTube videos, so she must be filming some new content for her OnlyFans page!
Suddenly, a large piece of stone worked loose from my leaning against the boulder and clattered its way down the face of the rock and into the lake. Hannah's head snapped around toward the sound. As she looked up, her eyes met mine and she screamed. "Who the hell are you and why are you spying on me?" She ran to the edge of the lake and grabbed a towel to cover herself. When she stood back up, she moved behind a tree. She also had a pistol in her hand. I called out. "Hannah, I do not know you personally, but I know who you are. I have followed you on YouTube and OnlyFans for some time now. And I am not spying on you, regardless of how it may seem." With a little less fear in her voice she yelled back "Then what the hell are you doing way out here?" I told her about my backpack trip and how I love to get to the most out-of-the-way places I can find. I told her how I spotted the vehicle tracks on the old jeep trail and then spotted the camper through the trees. I said that I did not know if I was walking into a drug deal or a stolen vehicle situation or just some old hippies out here to get high in nature. That was why decided to climb the boulder to get a look at what might be happening. "Well, you are pretty quick with an answer and you sound sincere, but I still don't trust it. I do have a gun and I'm not afraid to use it to protect myself!" "Listen to me Hannah, my name is Ted. I'm 52, an avid hiker and honestly, a big fan of yours. But this is nothing more than bad timing. I would never knowingly interrupt anyone who was out here working. Had I any idea that was what was going on, we would never have seen each other." She remained behind the tree and said nothing.
"So how about this. I'll head back down the trail and set my camp up in the second intersection with the old jeep trail. That will block the trail to any more traffic and hopefully prevent you from being interrupted again. If anyone comes along, I'll fire off a quick shot to alert you. Tomorrow morning, I'll head back down to the General Creek trail and then bushwhack my way over to Richardson Lake. I'll finish my backpack trip there and you will be completely alone again. Now, I'm going to stand up and work my way back down this rock. Don't shoot me!"
I waved as I turned to leave and then headed back down the rock outcrop. Hannah remained hidden in the trees and did not acknowledge me in any way. Couldn't say that I really blamed her. A stunningly beautiful young woman in a wilderness area, naked as the day she was born, filming herself when suddenly she is interrupted by an old man. It must have scared the shit out of her. I chuckled to myself as I made it to bottom of the rock and picked up my backpack. 'Well at least I didn't have to pay for THAT view'.
