MUSTANG SALLY PART 2
CHAPTER 1
I was at my buddy Bill's house one weekend in September hanging out. We had been friends for years. Met at a place both of us used to work at but no longer do. We were grilling some burgers and drinking a few beers. His wife, Dana, was in the house with Dolores, a lady I had just started dating. They were making some baked beans and potato salad to go with the burgers.
Bill asked about my car. The Chevelle. He knew it was in the shop getting the engine rebuilt. It had developed a valve tick and I decided to just go ahead and get it rebuilt. I had been wanting to do that anyway. I told him they said it would be about a month. I was driving my old pickup in the meantime.
Bill said he was considering getting an old Mustang. That he had a 67 when he was a teenager. Nothing special. Just a coupe with a 6 cylinder and automatic tranny. He said he always loved the old Mustangs and every time he saw one he got the bug. He had gotten a little inheritance when his dad passed 2 years ago and he was thinking about using it to get one. He said, "I thought maybe since you're kinda in the circle with classic car guys, you might know somebody that has one for sale."
"I can't think of any right off, but if I run across one, I'll let you know. Anything in particular? As far as year, body style, engine?"
"Not really. 73 or older. I hate the newer ones. Preferably 8 cylinder, 4 speed. Convertible would be nice, but not a requirement. I know I can't be real choosy because I only got 30 grand to spend. Dana's not real crazy about it but she finally agreed to let me spend 30,000 of my inheritance on one.
"You should be able to find something decent for that. You ain't gonna get a Mach 1 or GT500 or anything, but you can get a nice car for that. I'll keep my eyes open."
"Thanks. These burgers are ready. Would you ask the girls if they're ready?"
I went in and helped the girls carry stuff out to the picnic table.
After we ate and Dolores and I were getting ready to leave I was talking to Bill. I said, "I do have a friend that has a Mach 1. I'll ask if she knows anybody that has one for sale. Usually car freaks, like me, know others with the same kind of cars. I"ll let you know what I find out."
"Thanks. That would be great."
CHAPTER 2
I called Bonnie the next day. I hadn't talked to her in a couple of weeks. We didn't talk a lot since she met her new boyfriend. Mostly texts, but a call here and there. It had been 6 months since our hookup when we met. We chatted for a little while and caught up with what was going on in our lives.
Then she said, "It's funny. I was thinking about calling you. There's a car show going on next weekend down your way and I was going to see if you were going."
"You mean the one in Waynesburg?"
"Yeah. I think it's the last one of the season and I wanted to go one more time before winter. Rob's gonna be out of town. And he's not much of a car guy anyway. To him they're just a means of transportation. So he don't like the shows. He'll go with me to make me happy, but he'd rather look at computers."
"I hadn't planned on going. Kimmie's in the shop. I finally decided to get the engine redone. That's kind of a long drive for you. Probably 70 miles from where you live."
"Yeah. But I got nothing else to do. And I want to do something before the weather gets bad."
"Yeah. I get it." I told her I had called to see if she knew anybody that had a Mustang for sale. That a friend of mine wanted one. And I thought maybe she would know somebody.
"Actually, I do. I think it's a 73. Fastback. 302 automatic, I think, but I'm not positive. Seems to me he was asking 20. He would probably come down a little because it needs some work. Probably a pretty good deal. I can give you his number if you want."
"Yeah. Please."
"Hang on a sec. I gotta dig it out of my purse. I wrote it on the back of a card."
She gave me the number. "You know. He'll be there with his car at the show next weekend. Your friend could see it there."
"Unfortunately he'll be gone next weekend."
