Scarlett spent Christmas with her family.
Relatives had come to stay with them for the festive season and after Christmas she really wanted to get away for some time to herself. She went to the shops to buy a top for the New Year's Eve party at her friend's house and to spend some of the money she got for Christmas.
Scarlett spent the afternoon shopping, buying some new underwear and pyjamas, and she treated herself to a whole new outfit for the party. She knew Shane would probably be there so she felt like she needed some armour.
As she was looking at makeup in the department store, suddenly she felt someone hugging her from behind and kissing her on the neck. "Hello you" Shane said softly in her ear.
"Oh!" Scarlett jumped "You scared me!" she said, trying to shrug him off. "What the fuck are you doing?" she hissed, turning round to face him. She was thinking how typical it was that the very time she was trying to avoid him, he was out shopping too.
"My mum gave me a voucher for Christmas so I was just in looking around for what to buy when I spotted you in your natural habitat" Shane teased, nudging her. "Are you going to Liam's party tomorrow night?" he asked.
"Ehm... yeah" Scarlett replied. "I meant what the fuck are you doing creeping up on me like that." she said, looking around for a reason to move away from him. "I have to pay for this." she said, holding up a lip gloss and pointing towards the tills. She could feel her heart breaking again the longer she stood in front of him. She wanted to feel the comfort of being with him even though she knew it was the wrong thing and she was trying to strengthen her defenses.
"Me too!" Shane smiled, gesturing towards a garish shirt in his hand.
He followed her and stood close behind her as they waited in the queue. She felt awkward and a bit nervous but she didn't really understand why.
"Do you fancy going for a drink or something?" Shane asked. "I've not had any dinner, we could get food if you like?"
If there was a time for Scarlett to work on being assertive and avoid the clutches of Shane's more controlling behaviour, it was now but she failed, again. She couldn't face going home to a house full of people, the guests she'd spent the last week tolerating, being expected to socialise when all she wanted to do was drink wine in her pyjamas and watch Christmas specials on TV.
"Eh... yeah, sure" Scarlett said, trying to sound nonchalant. "What do you fancy?" she asked. He stepped right up behind her. "Shane!" she hissed as she felt him press his erection against her ass, she stepped forward, away from him.
"What?!" he teased, stepping forward against her back again. "Been thinking about you all week, that's what you do to me" he whispered in her ear and sighed heavily.
Scarlett tutted and reached between them, firmly but gently pushing him backwards. "Shane! Chill out, would you?Let me pay for this." she whispered.
"If you insist" he said, he skipped into the top of the adjacent queue and paid for his shirt. He waited outside the shop, grasping Scarlett by the hand as she left the shop. "You ok, Scarl?" he asked, stroking her hand and looking down at her. "You seem a bit tense." They walked out on to the street.
"Yeah" Scarlett said, trying to make her voice heard over the traffic. "It just feels a bit strange. I mean we haven't really been in touch much and here you're getting on like you only saw me this morning." she shrugged, letting go of his hand.
He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling her into his chest. "When I see you, I realise how much I've missed you. That's all. I just want us to spend time together, like it used to be." he said.
"You mean you want to spend time trying to have your way with me while I'm too weak and stupid to resist?" she said, blankly.
"That too" he laughed. She felt sick and guilty for letting herself fall into his trap, knowing what she was letting herself in for but she longed for a connection.
They went to a nearby pub for food, drinks and a few games of pool, Scarlett chose her favourite meal, she missed it when she was away at uni and it was the local food she craved when she was homesick. During the evening Scarlett had many moments where she felt joyful and was so relaxed that she wondered to herself why she had been feeling so disappointed and upset by Shane. They were having fun and laughing together now.
As the night time crowd began to fill the pub, Shane and Scarlett had to shout to hear each other. "Do you want to go after this game?" shouted Shane, nodding towards the pool table. Scarlett agreed. The cool night air hit them as they left the pub, Scarlett realised she'd had a lot more to drink than she thought and tried not to make it too obvious. But looking at Shane, he appeared to be in the same situation. Scarlett laughed. "What's so funny?" asked Shane, smiling at her.
"How are we both this drunk after having such a big dinner and playing pool?" giggled Scarlett.
"You don't notice it though - all the drinks in between, remember when we used to go during the Summer it was the same? Sure we'll be sober by the time we get home." he laughed, putting his arm round her shoulder and walking towards the top of the queue of taxis waiting outside the pub.
