The Nosey Neighbor - His Story
By: VanillaUnicorn
As tempted as Paul was to go up and join his house guest in the shower, he still had plenty of food left to eat on his plate and he wasn't about to waste any of it. He could've easily scarfed it all down and still went up to join her but she made it clear she had plans for them later that night and he was going to try his best to maintain himself throughout the day so that he would have plenty to give her then.
Finishing his food, he put the dish in the dishwasher even though it hadn't been rinsed off like he usually did. With Jennifer in the shower he didn't want to run the water and cause her to get burned by the change in the water temperature. Back when he was remodeling the place the plumber had suggested that he could reroute the piping so that something like that couldn't happen but it simply wasn't a priority or in his budget at the time.
Looking outside the weather was still nice even though the seasons had completely shifted to autumn. Since Jennifer had made it clear she had plans for the day and he wouldn't see her again until later that night, he had to find something to occupy his day. A quick glance out the kitchen window hinted at what he needed to do. He still had to finish painting the last bits of the fence before winter came. It was a project he didn't enjoy doing and had continuously put it off over and over. Parts of the fence had been painted during the time Emily had been gone to her mother's and some had been taken care of previously before anything had happened with the neighbor girl but he had a solid day's worth of work ahead of him still.
After heading upstairs to change, he grabbed the supplies he needed from his garage and made his way out to the fence. It was still early enough in the morning that very few people seemed to be up and stewing about in their yards. He could hear yelling coming from inside the Mitchell house though, which reminded him of something he still needed to do. He walked into the little shed by his pool for some privacy. Pulling out his phone he went through his contacts before finally coming up to Jon's number and pressed the button to place the call.
The phone rang a few times before someone on the other end finally picked up.
"Hello?" Jon asked in a tone that said he had just woken up.
"Hey it's Paul. I was wondering if you were still good with computer stuff." Paul asked him.
"Depends on the kinda computer stuff we are talking about." Jon replied.
"Oh. I need a hand unlocking a hard drive Emily had. Her laptop completely died and she still wants to get all of the stuff off it if possible. We took it out of her computer already and I recall you saying before that you had done something like that with Tony's old computer." Paul replied with a slight lie.
"That's not so hard. You mainly just need a transfer cable to plug it in another computer unless the computer you are trying to move everything to has an open bay it can be slotted into." Jon explained.
"Oh, how much would one of those cables run me?" Paul asked.
"They aren't that much but you would most likely have to order it online. I doubt any store around here would carry anything like that. Give me a minute though and i'll check to see if I still have the one I used before." Jon replied then set his phone down on the end table with the line still open.
Paul waited in silence while Jon was searching for the cable but he could hear the faint sounds of yelling coming from next door again. He watched out the window but didn't see anyone in the Mitchells' back yard or visible in any of the windows. The voices were clear enough that he could make out the distinct sounds of both Bob and Brent as they argued back and forth. While he couldn't hear exactly what was being said, he did have a strong suspicion that it was because of what he and Jennifer had done there the day before.
"Hey still there?" Jon asked after picking the phone back up.
"Yeah i'm still here." Paul answered back.
"You are in luck my friend. I actually still have mine and I can even show you how to use it if you want." Jon said to back him.
"Awesome. Do you think you can run it over today, say around 1:30? I'm going to be painting the last of my fence and should be done by then." Paul said not explaining that part of the reason he wanted his friend to drop it off later in the day was so that Jennifer wasn't there when he did and she still didn't know he swiped Brent's hard drive while they were getting all of her stuff.
"Yeah that works for me. Better to do it today than a day we have to work." Jon replied with a laugh.
"Alright i'll see you at 1:30 then."
"Alright bud, see you then." Jon said before hanging up on his end.
Moving out of the shed, the yelling was louder by that point. The sounds of things being smashed echoed from the house as Bob and Brent went back and forth. While he was curious what exactly had been said, he knew it was better to stay away from any of the drama or fighting. Grabbing the brush he moved down to a section of bare wood and got to work on the fence.
He wasn't sure how long he had been at it. The argument next door had simmered as time went by and the sun was beating down hard on him. It wasn't until he heard the sliding glass door being pulled open and Jennifer saying something quietly to get his attention that he stopped what he was doing and headed in her direction.
Walking back inside he cleaned his hands while she told him all about what she had done so far that morning. Jennifer had been busy taking care of the small things but then mentioned that it was noon and she needed to head out to meet the lawyer. He didn't realize the time had flown by. He told her about the fighting next door that he had heard while he was out there. As far as he could tell none of the other neighbors had come closer to investigate the loud disturbance but they both knew that it was likely their fault that the fighting had started in the first place.
She shot him a frown before letting out a deep sigh.
"I'd imagine he knows then. My lawyer is from the same firm his is from. I bet he told Bob I was coming in." Jen said with a sad look on her face.
"Well I better get this over with. The quicker I can get things filed, the quicker I can get away from here." She continued before realizing what she had just said. "Sorry I didn't mean it like that. I love being here with you. I meant I needed to get away from my family is all."
Paul knew what she meant but it would probably be for the best to have her gone too. He didn't know when Emily was going to be coming home and he couldn't have Jen there when she did. He stepped forward to give her a hug.
"Alright be careful. If you think Bob is going to cause you any harm. Go to the police and file a restraining order." Paul said to her quietly.
"I'm not worried about Bob like that. He's a coward that couldn't beat up an empty bag. Brent would be the violent one, especially now that i'm not there for him to molest anymore." Jen said with a bit of fear in her voice.
