She heard them arguing again, this time outside her front door. Melanie was in the kitchen getting dinner ready, too far away from the door to actually hear what they were arguing about, but she had a basic idea of what it was about. It was mostly her sister, Karen, berating her boyfriend, Tyler, over whatever nonsense she could come up with. She could never understand what Tyler saw in her sister; he was too much of a nice guy to put up with her sister's craziness.
When they were finally done arguing, they knocked on the door and Melanie went to greet them with a smile. She did her best to pretend that she didn't hear them arguing that whole time.
"Sorry, we're late," said Karen as they entered Melanie's apartment. "Tyler took the long way to get here."
"There was a detour because of some roadwork," said Tyler.
Karen snapped at him. "You could've driven faster to make up for the time if you didn't drive like a grandmother."
Melanie knew about the roadwork Tyler was talking about. The detour took them into a residential zone, so speeding up there to make up the time would've gotten him pulled over by the police.
Melanie invited them over to dinner to celebrate her getting a new apartment. It was the first time she had lived on her own. She was 25 and needed to get out of her mother's house, especially since she had gotten remarried. She had nothing against her stepfather, but with him moving into their small house, she never got any privacy, so she decided it was time to get out of there.
She was encouraged by her sister, who moved out of the house over a year ago and got an apartment with Tyler, saying it was the best thing they ever did. At least that's how it was for Karen. From what Melanie could see, Tyler only got more miserable every time she saw him.
During dinner, Tyler let the two sisters chat away as much as they wanted, and he just stayed quiet as he ate. He was surprised at how good of a cook Melanie was, considering how awful Karen's cooking was. He got used to it over the last year, but he was finally glad to be getting a well-cooked meal.
He had tried to get in on their conversation a few times, but Karen either told him to be quiet or insulted him for his comments. Even when he tried to compliment Melanie on how good her fish recipe was, Karen still found a way to put him down. Meanwhile, Melanie had to stay quiet every time she saw how badly she treated Tyler.
She loved her sister dearly, but couldn't stand how badly she was treating her boyfriend. She had tried to talk to Karen about how she treated Tyler. She admitted she was sometimes tough on him and vowed to change, but she soon forgot about it.
"So how do you like finally living on your own?" Karen asked.
"It's wonderful. The best part of it is now having to hear mom having wild sex with Wally down the hall."
"I didn't think the old dog still had it in him," said Karen. "Maybe he could give Tyler a few lessons; he could use them."
Tyler just looked away when Karen said that and took a bite of his meal. Melanie said nothing during the awkward silence of having to hear her sister ridicule her boyfriend's sexual performance right in front of him. She did think it was odd, considering when she was alone with her sister, she would brag about how good he was in bed and what a nice dick he had.
"So, you got no problems here?" Karen asked about the apartment.
"Well, there are a few things that need to be worked on around here. I've been trying to get the landlord to fix them, but according to my neighbors, it's almost impossible to get him to come around to do anything."
"Tyler could probably help," said Karen. "Fixing things around the house is the one useful thing he's good at."
There was another awkward silence before Tyler finally spoke.
"Sure, I'll be happy to help," he told them.
"Great, he'll come by tomorrow around noon. Just tell him what you need so he can get the necessary stuff," said Karen, turning her head to Tyler. "And don't be late getting here again."
"I won't," he replied sullenly.
Melanie was going to say he didn't have to come; she didn't want to take advantage of his generosity. But seeing how Karen had been treating Tyler, she figured a day away from her might do him some good.
After dinner, they watched a movie on Netflix with popcorn. During that time, they had too much fun watching the movie for Karen to berate Tyler, until the movie was over and she somehow blamed him for the bad tasting popcorn that Melanie thought was alright.
Before they left, Karen got Melanie to write out a list of what she needed fixed in her apartment for Tyler to be ready for. When they left, she heard Karen arguing with Tyler as they walked down the hall towards the elevator.
The next day, Melanie got ready for Tyler. She got some sandwiches ready for him to thank him for helping her with her apartment. He came just before noon, and as soon as he got there, he had to text Karen that he had arrived to show her that he wasn't going to be late.
"Thanks for coming. I really appreciate it," said Melanie.
"It's no problem; I'm glad to help," he replied. "Where do we begin?"
"How about we have lunch first?" Melanie suggested.
She led Tyler to the kitchen table, where she had her sandwiches and sodas ready. Tyler looked like he was in heaven. He said they looked like the sandwiches they put in TV commercials that you never actually see in the stores. He was about to take a bite of his first sandwich before he stopped.
"I don't know if I should eat this," he told her. "Karen doesn't like it when I eat food with this many carbs or calories."
With a slick smile, Melanie replied, "Karen is not here. She doesn't have to know what you're eating."
They sat down and ate their lunch. Tyler was having the time of his life eating her delicious sandwiches. He claimed the only sandwich Karen ever made him was whatever pre-made sandwich they made at the local supermarket. The topic kept changing to Karen, and Melanie did whatever she could to talk about anything else.
