One Last Time
Light from a full moon splashed through the big window, splattering the bedroom with light like it was on display at a furniture store. Quiet sounds of a saxophone and piano echoed off the walls. The curtains moved with a cool mountain breeze coming through a slightly open window, competing with the heat from the fire place.
A small table, two seating chairs on either side of it, was set up facing the fireplace Standing behind the table, holding her glass of tequila, she stared into the fire. Her thoughts began to dance along with the flames. Memories slowly started to burn away as fear began to creep in.
Her husband told her the news that they were no longer safe. She wasn't going to run. She knew the uselessness of it. All they would do is buy themselves hours. Maybe a day. No point in fighting back, she knew the horrible stories of who the person was they did business with. Knew that tonight would be her last.
Stepping away from the table, drink in hand, she swallowed the last of its contents, set the glass down on the desk as she walked toward the large bay window on the other side of the large master bedroom. Passing her husband she brushed his arm, never looking at him.
He was leaning against his desk, legs crossed at the ankles, arms crossed in front of him, head down. He didn't look up when she walked past and touched him. He knew tonight was their last. He would never see her again. Never see the moon again, the mountains he had grown to love. For years everything ran smoothly. Perfectly. Then he got careless, arrogant, cocky, selfish. Got into business and trusted the wrong person. And it will cost him his life. Her life.
She stopped in front of the window and looked out at the clear winter sky. The snow covered mountains gleamed from the bright moonlight like a disco ball, as the trees swayed with the harmony of the wind.
She closed her eyes, tears welling up and spoke to her husband, "Is it confirmed?" She asked in almost a whisper.
With his voice breaking he answered, "Yes ma'am I'm afraid it is."
"And the kids?" She asked turning toward him, tears beginning to fall.
"Separated and safe, just like we arranged." He said looking up towards her. Seeing her tears he straightened up and walked to her.
