MONDAY
I woke up feeling refreshed. It was earlier than I usually woke up, so the bathroom was empty when I got to it. I was ready and downstairs for breakfast at the same time as my mom.
"Someone's up early. What's the occasion?"
"No occasion. I just woke up early. How long until breakfast is ready?"
"I didn't expect you to be here now, so it will be a while. In the meantime, help yourself to a breakfast bar."
After grabbing a breakfast bar, I got the newspaper and started reading. My dad walked down the stairs. When he saw me, he asked, "What's going on here?"
My mom replied, "A miracle is happening. He's up early, reading a newspaper, without us asking him to."
"I've gotten up early before," I retorted.
"Not saying you haven't, but all those previous times, it's been us constantly nagging you too."
They teased me a while longer before my dad asked, "Have you made a final decision yet on the job?"
"Yeah, I think I'll go through with it. What do I have to do?"
"I'll call Barlow and text you."
"Sounds good."
Breakfast was now ready, and I inhaled it and left for school. There was still half an hour before school opened, and the student parking lot was sparse. I didn't see any cars from the group, so I stayed inside my car till someone showed up.
I was busy scrolling on my phone when someone knocked on my window. It spooked me and made me drop my phone. I looked to see who it was, and it was Courtney.
I opened the door, and she said, "Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. Let me help look for your phone."
"You're good. The phone fell under the seat. Can you turn on your flashlight?"
"Sure thing."
We spotted the phone right away but had a hard time getting it. Eventually, we were able to snag it.
We headed inside the school and found an open classroom.
"Why are you here so early?" I asked Courtney.
"School magazine. It's time to publish the monthly edition, so we had a meeting about the articles, layouts, and all other good stuff," she said sarcastically.
"Sounds fun," I replied sarcastically.
We continued talking when Morgan entered the classroom. "Courtney! I was looking all over for you. Why weren't you in our usual spot?"
That's when she saw me, and her face turned sour. "What are you doing here?" she asked spitefully.
"Nothing much, just talking to Courtney."
"Why don't you fuck off and leave us alone?"
"Morgan!" Courtney shouted. "I asked him to come sit with me. Don't be so rude."
"He started it."
I looked at her with a crazy look, wondering how she pinned this on me. "What do you mean? You're the one who came in here, guns blazing. How did I start this?"
"You started this by being you."
"Wow! Are we in kindergarten? That's a stupid argument to make."
Courtney butted in before things escalated, "Can you both stop? Jesus! Classes haven't started yet, and I'm ready to go home."
"Sorry," I sheepishly replied.
Morgan meanwhile just huffed angrily, probably towards me.
Other kids started to filter into school, and I took that as my opportunity to leave. I got up and said, "I'm going to head out. See you later, Courtney."
"Good," Morgan said with attitude.
I looked around till I found Zoe and Sydney sitting in the library. I pulled up a chair and joined them.
"You look like you're in a bad mood," Sydney said.
"Yeah, well, Morgan happened."
"Morgan? The one who's attached to the hip of Courtney?"
"That's the one."
"She always seemed bitchy to me."
Zoe looked at Sydney with raised eyebrows.
"I know I can be bitchy too, but I compensate for it at other departments," Sydney justified.
"What happened?" Zoe asked.
"Honestly, I don't even know. She just flipped out on me for no reason at all."
"C'mon. You had to be doing something."
"Nope. All I was doing was talking with Courtney."
This piqued Sydney's interest, and she asked, "Courtney, huh?"
"Yeah, Courtney. Why did you say that weird?"
"Oh, I don't know. I think you guys would make a cute couple."
I looked at Zoe, and she pursed her lips. I kept staring at her until she broke. She said, "OK, fine. I told her about you and Courtney, but it's Sydney. It's good, she won't tell anyone."
"Yeah, I won't tell anyone unless you want me to. I am offended that I had to hear from Zoe and not you."
"I definitely don't want you telling anyone else. If anyone else knows, I prefer it being from me."
Zoe said, "Jake. Since you didn't get to tell Sydney this, do you want to tell her something else?"
"Oo. Tell me, Jake. I want to know," Sydney said.
I let out a long sigh and bluntly said, "Zoe and I had sex together. I also told her that you and I had sex together...a few times."
Sydney proudly looked at Zoe and hugged her. "Welcome to the club, slut!"
"Weird. This is not how I imagined you to take it," I said.
"What? Did you expect me to get mad? Come on, Jake. You're not that special."
