Sexy Memories II
David looked at the caller ID again and hesitated before answering the call. He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly to gain his composure before he spoke.
"Hello?" he said in a voice he hoped showed no emotion.
"Hi," the soft voice answered.
David cleared his throat and pretended not to recognize the voice.
"Who is this?"
"David don't do this," the voice returned. "It's Shelby. I saw you in the grocery store and I know you saw me. Let's not play games."
Her voice sounded silky and soft even when she was chastising him.
"I'm sorry I ran out of the store on you like that. I just didn't know what to say," she started.
"I was surprised too. So why did you call?" He asked.
Again there was silence on the other end. It was just like old times.
"I don't know," Shelby whispered into the phone. "I guess.....I guess maybe I just wanted to hear your voice."
David closed his eyes and bit his lip. How many nights had he longed to just hear her voice, but he always stopped himself from calling her. She was the one who left, not him. Why now?
"Maybe I shouldn't have called," she said in a whisper.
"I just don't know what you want," David said aggravated. "You leave and three years later you call out of the blue. I don't get it Shelby. I didn't understand then and I don't understand now."
"You have every right to be angry," Shelby began. "What I did to you was horrible."
David ran his hand through his hair, "Damn right it was horrible. Do you know how long it took me to get over you?" he asked and the answer was that he never got over her.
"I never forgot you," she said then fell silent.
"Fuck!" David mumbled under his breath. "Don't say that. You got over me real quick. You picked up and left and I never heard from you again. Don't tell me you never forgot about me. If you had, then you would have called or done something, but you didn't Shelby. You didn't do anything."
"I know David. I know. I shouldn't have called. I have no right to call."
"Just tell me what you want," David began to crumble. "Tell me why now?"
"I've been thinking about you a lot. I mean it wasn't an accident that I saw you in the grocery store. I've watched you a lot, but I got careless today and you spotted me. That wasn't supposed to happen."
She was tearing him apart, "You've been following me?"
