He took a seat at a table in the middle, equidistant from the stage up front and the last table in the rear. It was where he usually sat when attending these health care conferences, regardless of where they were held. He attended three or four of these a year; not because he wanted to, but rather he was required to by the insurance company he worked for. The intent was to highlight new strategies in health care, how different companies covered various medical proceduresβthose that were willing to shareβand any other items of interest that anyone wanted to bring up.
The conferences were mostly boring. The bigger companies seldom revealed their policies, and the smaller companies didn't generally have the wherewithal to be trend setters. However, Keith usually felt that if he came away with at least one piece of usable information that made it worthwhile to attend.
The trick for him was to remain attentive when he frequently heard the same things from conference to conference.
Glancing around, Keith knew many of the attendees. Like him, many others were required by their respective companies to attend. Some of them, including him, would all go to dinner when the day's meetings were done, and of those, a few, again including him, would end up in the hotel bar after that.
He greeted the ones who passed his table. There were those who liked to sit up front, and others who favored the back. So far, no one had joined him at his table.
The presenters were gathering on stage signifying that the conference was about to begin. Keith looked over the agenda once more as if he expected it to have changed. Of course, it did not.
Each table could accommodate two people. There was a center aisle, and Keith had taken the seat nearest it. Then, just as the host stepped up to the podium, someone grabbed the seat next to him. Feeling the presence, Keith turned to see a gorgeous redhead drop her papers and portfolio, which was actually an iPad, onto the table. She smiled at him and asked, "Is this seat taken?"
"All yours," Keith responded with a nod, but was unable to take his eyes off her. He did not recognize her; so, she was obviously new. He committed as much as he could to memory before returning his attention to the podium as the host started speaking. However, he heard nothing as his mind replayed what he had seen: a beautiful woman in a dark blue, tight-fitting dress that hinted at a fairly perfect figure. The dress was short, but respectably so, and enough to show a bit of leg when she crossed them. With his head facing forward, he tried to look at her peripherally, but all he could see was the roundness of some nice-sized breasts resting on the table.
It was difficult enough to remain attentive to the drudgery of this conference. Having this beautiful woman sitting beside him was not going to make it any easier. Particularly as she leaned over, their shoulders touching, and whispered, "Did I miss anything?"
"No. It's just starting."
"Thanks." And then she knocked him over with this radiant smile.
And so, the next two hours were pure misery. Keith reminded himself several times while resisting the urge to sneak a glance that she was just another attractive woman and there were enough others he'd already seen here.
Finally, it was time for the mid-morning break.
"Well,
that
was a bit tedious," the woman commented.
"Yes. This your first time attending one of these?"
"It is. When they asked me if I could travel, I didn't know this was what they meant."
"Traveling might be the only good thing about coming," Keith remarked. "Three or four days out of the office is always nice."
"Well, that's true." She extended her hand. "I'm Ashley."
He eagerly took it. "Keith."
"So, you've been to these before?"
"Oh, yeah. Three or four a year."
"Mmmm. That's what's been hinted to me."
"The presentations are so-so, but you actually learn more from socializing. A few of us usually go to dinner together. You're welcome to join us. Then afterward, some of us end up in the bar. Those conversations are where you might pick up on something."
There was that smile again.
"Now,
you've got me interested."
After another agonizing hour and a half, they broke for the provided lunch buffet.
"Do you mind some company for lunch?" Ashley asked as they both stood.
Somewhat surprised, but definitely not disappointed, Keith said, "Sure," trying not to sound too excited. As she gathered up her belongings, he added, "If you plan on sitting here for the afternoon session, you can leave all your papers, but I wouldn't leave the iPad."
"Do you mind if I sit here again?"
With a smirk, Keith said, "I don't know, you were kind of loud during the last session." To her frown, he added, "I'm kidding. I hope you do stay."
That dangerous smile again.
They filled their plates and found seats. So far, no one else was sitting at the table for eight. But there was way more tables than there were people.
"I'm surprised there's no lunchtime speaker," Ashley commented.
"There used to be," Keith told her. "But everyone complained that we needed the down time. Translated, that means, we could only take so many dull speakers."
Ashley laughed. "It is nice to just be able to talk. Will the afternoon be the same as the morning?"
"Pretty much. They've started unofficially ending the day around midafternoon, so you have time to relax before dinner, which is on your own."
"Mid-afternoon? That'll be nice."
"Well, they started realizing that as the afternoon wore on, people were sneaking out, so there was really no point in running it all day."
"Makes sense."
"They really ought to hold the last session in the bar. That's where most everyone will be."
"Sounds like a good place to end the day."
"Where I'll be."
Having sat across from her during lunch, Keith did not feel the need to steal glimpses during the afternoon session. The midday meal enabled him to notice that while she was a very attractive woman, she was not as beautiful as he first thought. Still, she was pleasant to look at.
And when the end of the session arrived, Ashley asked, "Are you headed for the bar?"
