This is the story of a guy, his ex wife, and her new girlfriend all living together until he meets a lady.
My ex wife, Jo, is an attractive woman. She was about 5'3" 110 pounds. She had black hair that now had streaks of gray hair showing through. I routinely teased her and told her that those were her racing stripes. We had been married for a little over fifteen years before we got divorced.
No kids, but that wasn't for a lack of trying. She'd gotten pregnant several times but each time it resulted in a miscarriage and we finally decided that it wasn't in the cards for us. The emotional toll got heavier with each pregnancy and I think that was our breaking point. That pain was the reason I had gotten a vasectomy and she'd decided to have her tubes tied.
After she'd gone through menopause, she changed. Not necessarily for the worse, but with her new openness to experiences meant she was wanting more than what I could offer physically. We had lots of discussions and while some of them started off rather painfully, they ultimately ended in our mutual decision to divorce in order to give her freedom. Our divorce was more of a case of friends deciding to remove marriage from our lives. Jo had mentioned that she felt that perhaps she was becoming attracted to women, but felt it would be wrong to pursue those feelings while we were married.
We'd had discussions about possibly bringing a woman into our relationship, but Jo had felt that it wasn't something she specifically wanted and didn't want a woman that was interested in guys, or as I later learned, interested in me. She had mentioned that she was quite jealous, at least while we were married.
As we worked through the logistics of divorce, covering everything from the pets, to money, to the house, one thing that never quite made the discussion topics was dating after the divorce or more importantly, how it would work since we still lived together.
To make matters more complex, we still had sex, somewhat frequently. I enjoyed this new side to both Jo and our relationship. Divorce took some of the legal stuff out of our relationship but left the fun so to speak. Initially neither of us were really looking for other partners. That changed during dinner one evening.
"Jim, can I ask you a question?" I nodded since I had food in my mouth.
"I met a woman at the gym and we've become good friends and might be headed towards being more than friends. I feel that you and I owe each other the courtesy to ask, but would it be okay if I invited her over sometime?"
"Thank you for asking, I am honored, of course you can. I guess we never discussed that, but yeah, I trust you and I'm okay with it."
Jo's eyes lit up, "Thank you! Her name is Stacy. She's a little taller than me, but about the same size and is a few years younger than me. She's a super sweet, genuine person and I'm certain that you'll get along great with her. I think she's confused as to why I still live with my ex, and trust me when I tell you, I've had to explain that to more people than I should. I just wanted to ask you so that it wasn't too awkward if she came over and maybe stayed the night."
"Jo, you're good. Like I said, I trust you and I hope things click for you guys."
We finished our meals and made small talk about all sorts of things. In the back of my mind, I knew that at some point in time, our fun would stop. If anything, Jo had always been a woman with a strong belief in what was right and wrong. And cheating was never, ever considered right.
I noticed one evening that Jo was getting ready to head out on a date. She'd asked my help in zipping her dress up.
"Hot date with Stacy?"
"Not sure how hot it'll be, but yes, I'm going out to dinner and maybe a few drinks with her. We may end up coming back here if that's okay."
"All good. I'll make sure I'm in my room to make sure things aren't weird."
"No need, she wants to meet you."
"Okay, I'll still make sure I give you guys plenty of space."
"Thanks Jim, I really appreciate this."
I gave her a quick hug, "Have fun tonight Jo, I can tell you're a little anxious or nervous. I'm sure you'll be just fine." She was a bit teary eyed.
"You know if you start that your makeup will run, but come to think of it, it might match your racing stripes."
She started laughing. "Thanks Jim, you ass. I guess I'll have to dye my hair if I get a second date."
"You'll not get a second date... I'm sure Stacy will love you just as you are!"
She gave me a big hug. "Thanks Jim, you have no idea how nervous I am."
"You're perfect, don't stress about it. Stacy liked the woman she met, so no need to change to be someone else. Also, if you guys have a few too many drinks, let me know and I'll come get you."
She smiled and headed out the door.
It was a little before 10 PM when they got home. I was in the kitchen getting some water when they came in.
"Hi Jim, do you have a few minutes?"
"Sure."
"Jim, this is Stacy, Stacy this is Jim." I extended my hand, which she accepted.
"Hi Stacy, it's nice to meet you. Jo speaks highly of you."
"Hi Jim, it's nice to finally meet you as well. Jo also speaks highly of you, too."
"I don't want to hold up your evening, so ladies if you don't mind, I'll excuse myself and head back to my room. It was nice to meet you Stacy. Also, if you guys are up for it, I'm cooking breakfast in the morning, pancakes and bacon...Have a great evening."
I went back to my room and finished my evening as I usually did, watching YouTube videos.
I wasn't listening for any noises which may explain why I didn't hear any. I slept pretty soundly, regardless. I got up in the morning and took a shower and shaved, got dressed and went out to the kitchen to start some coffee and breakfast.
Jo and Stacy came out of her room both wearing oversize t-shirts, looking like they had a good evening.
"Good morning ladies, coffee?"
Almost in unison, "Yes please!"
Jo had looked at Stacy, "Jim makes an awesome breakfast by the way."
Stacy smiled, "The smell of the bacon woke me up!"
I poured each of them a cup of coffee and went back to making the pancakes. "Please enjoy the coffee as I get everything ready."
They sat at the bar and were talking over their coffee. I got everything ready and sat some plates in front of them and then put the platters with pancakes and bacon.
"Do you guys mind if I have breakfast with you?"
Jo was first to speak, "Jim, of course. After all, it's rude to decline an invitation to dine with the chef."
Stacy followed pretty closely with, "Please, do join us!"
We sat and had breakfast at the kitchen bar and made small talk about all sorts of things. I wanted to ask how their evening went, but didn't want to seem rude, so I decided to not mention it.
"Well ladies, it's Saturday morning, any plans for the day?"
Jo spoke first, "Nothing really planned I guess, maybe hang out for a while. Anything you want to do Stacy?"
Stacy smiled at Jo and blushed a bit. "I can think of a few things I'd like to do."
I chuckled. "Looks like you guys have some plans after all. I'm headed to the store, do you guys need anything?"
Jo asked, "Could you grab a few bottles of a nice red wine? I'll transfer you some money later."
"No need, consider them my gift to you guys. Just text me if you think of anything else."
I put the dishes in the dishwasher and headed out.
