Clairece and Lisa Sit in the lawyer's office, to hear the reading of their mother's will. Clairece sits with her head down; tears flow from her eyes. Her sister Lisa the oldest, doesn't seem effected at all. Her fiancΓ© Greg holds her hand, trying to be supportive.
"I will now read the will." The lawyer begins. "To my daughter Lisa, I leave the house in Connecticut. To my daughter Clairece, I leave the cabin in the mountains. The money shall be divided equally, once they spend the week of Christmas in the cabin together. If one or the other should leave the cabin, they shall forfeit their share of the money." He finishes as he slides each an envelope.
"This is ridiculous, I have no desire to spend a minute in the cabin with her. Besides we are going to aspen for Christmas." Lisa tells him.
"Then you shall forfeit the money to your sister. Are we clear." The lawyer tells her.
"Lisa we can go next year; you have the house." Greg explains to her.
"That's true. How much money?" She asks with a smile to the lawyer.
"You shall receive ten million each." the lawyer explains. "One more thing mother also willed this." setting a wooden box on the desk. "It is for you Lisa."
She picks up the box and opens it. She takes one look at it and slides it to her sister. Clairece looks at it and smiles. She pulls a shelf elf from the box.
"Hello Oscar, it's been a long time." Then she looks up at her sister. "Are you sure, Mom always put him out at Christmas."
"Absolutely, I have no use for the creepy little thing. Mom set that thing on the mantle, I always felt like it was watching me." A shiver runs up her spine.
"Is that alright?" Clairece asks looking at the figure with a bright smile.
"That is fine Ms. Harbor. Now after Christmas, once you have honored the stipulations of the will. I shall turn the accounts over to you. Inside each envelope is a key to your property along with the necessary papers. Once you have arrived at the cabin, I shall make random checks to make sure you are honoring the agreement. Unless there are any questions, I bid you farewell." The lawyer says then pauses.
The three stand and leave the office, walking through the lobby to the parking lot. Clairece climbs in her 4x4 Suburban and drives to her apartment. Lisa slides into Greg's BMW I8 and Greg races off for his apartment.
Clairece hears her phone vibrate on the dash. She looks at her phone to see Lisa calling already. She picks it up to see what she wants.
"Hello." She says after putting it on speaker.
"I cannot believe I am forced to spend Christmas in that cabin instead of aspen. Why is mother doing this to me?" Lisa sobs on the phone. "I spent thousands on the cutest outfits, just to be stuck in a cabin with you and what's his name."
"It will only be me, Carl ran off five years ago, remember when I was sick." Clairece says, shaking her head.
"Oh yes, the cancer thing." she says with no concern. "How is that going for you?"
