Pete was on the road somewhere in Indiana, his usual territory, much closer to home back east. He was covering the area as a last minute thing, the trip already booked when the company had to move on from the person who covered it. Pete had another 100+ miles to go, with nothing but satellite radio on in the rental. He drove on, looking around at the area he'd never thought he'd be anywhere near. Although he realized a long time ago, most places look alike, only the names change. As he drove he saw a sign for French Lick, home of Larry Bird, flashbacks to his younger days and the glory of those teams.
A couple more miles and he noticed another sign for Jasper, he tried to recall why that name stuck in his mind, and he racked his brain a while then shook it off and drove on to his hotel. He settled in and did some work to kill the afternoon, then headed out to find dinner. Pete settled in at a local place, knowing from many years on the road, to find the hidden gems. The waitress, Hayley was friendly as anyone he ever met, everything you hear about Middle America people. She was a college student (aren't they all) working away and getting through. After dinner he asked her for a place to grab a drink, not the college bar type place, just a casual easy spot. She made her recommendation, and he went off.
He was sitting at the bar, nice not too quiet, not crazy loud and busy, he talked up the bartender about this and that as his drink was put down on the bar. Pete chatted with the bartender until the next customer ordered a drink. Pete reached for his glass, lifted it in a semi toast 'thanks Hayley' he paused a second 'Hay-ley' and suddenly, his eyes widened.
Pete sat at the bar stunned for a minute, then a small smile crossed his face as he took another sip, and his mind wandered back over 25 years, to the first time he met her. He was the college student, working, night's weekends and going to class all day. The restaurant was pretty busy and the hours were there for the taking. It's a casual atmosphere behind the customer view plenty of banter to go around, after work was more of the same.
He worked a lot with an assistant manager, a transplant who was in the service and filled in time at the restaurant for extra money. One day a girl walks in the restaurant and heads to the back room, "Hi sweetie" she said to Pete, which was odd for a kid of 19 to hear as he had no clue who she was. After a few minutes she came back out front and talked to the crew getting ready for the nights business. She turned to his "You must be Pete, I'm Lisa and Neil has told me a lot about you". Pete shook her hand and figured out it was Neil's wife who had to go back home to Indiana for a family issue. She bounced away out back, almost skipping as she walked, her barely 5'2 frame small tight body, more cute than hot, he gave her the quick once over as she disappeared into the store room again.
As Pete had been there only 3 weeks he had never met her, but over the next year they worked together a lot, while Neil tried to not work every day Lisa did, sometimes in the food business it's unavoidable. Though when they did work together, they stayed away from personal chat, while working, and on a busy night, it's pretty easy, everyone was close knit in this place and friendly banter was the norm. Lisa called everyone sweetie or hunn, Pete responded by calling her sweet lady, and they became the hit as they played off each other without a second lost between them, sometimes trying to one up the other.
One day Pete called and Neil answers, "I need an hour, I'm still at school, I'm going to see the professor, trig is kicking my ass and I just don't get this shit" he said. Neil said it was ok and he'd cover it just be there asap. Shortly after an hour had past, Pete came in and went right to his work. He thanked Neil for understanding, "Go get with Lisa, she's a math wiz, she can help if you're stuck, meet her here some afternoon or come by the apartment, she's a big help" he offered. Lisa said the same thing that night, offering her help, math just came to her, she gets it. A couple weeks go by and Pete is still struggling with school. "There are only so many times I make an offer to a guy before I just don't offer anymore", Lisa said.
