Jon Major has always enjoyed the company of women. In the series

Caught!

we saw Jon as a college student whose heart was broken repeatedly by girlfriends who were unfaithful. The Major Diaries tells the story of Jon when he's older and wiser - and determined to be with as many beautiful women as possible without risking betrayal. How well does he succeed? Chapter 14 reveals what happened when Stephanie told her Mom about Jon. All characters are adults over the age of 18.

............................................

"That is IT! I am DONE! It is OVER!"

Stephane threw down her backpack and took Jon in her arms. "Congratulations, graduate," he said. "How was the last day of classes?"

"Boring! We didn't do anything all day. Nobody felt like working, and the teachers didn't even try. We just sat around gossiping the whole time. It was a waste."

"Yeah, I think that's the experience for every high school student," Jon said. "It was like that for me. I remember that a group of my friends had a band, and they set up their instruments in the gym. They played for hours, and nobody cared. It was better than going to class."

"I've been thinking about one thing all day," Stephanie said. "Now, I finally get to do it." She began unbuttoning Jon's shirt. "Take me to bed," she said.

Jon surprised her by picking her up in his arms and carrying her to his bedroom. She laughed when he threw her on the mattress. "Strip off those clothes, wench!" he said.

"Yes, Your Highness," she replied.

They proceeded to have one of the most energetic and joyful sessions of lovemaking since the beginning of their romance. They laughed and giggled as they moved from one position to another. Jon played heavy metal music on the stereo; it provided a contrast to the music and natural sounds they usually used as a background soundtrack for sex. Stephanie made the kind of faces she imagined that a girl would make at a heavy metal concert, although she had never actually been to one herself. The antics eventually stopped as they became increasingly aroused and needed to focus on satisfying each other. They moved faster, and harder, and Stephanie climaxed as Jon pounded into her like a jackhammer. He came less than a minute later, then fell on the bed beside her.

"I'm turning off this music," he said, reaching for the remote. "I've had as much head banging as I can take."

Stephanie wore a huge smile on her face, and it wasn't just because she'd had hot sex with the man she loved. Her life was about to change, and in a big way. Yes, she was thrilled to be finished with high school. She'd excelled as a student, but she was happy to be done, and she looked forward to what came next. But she had an even bigger reason to be happy. This was the day she'd chosen to reveal her secret to her mother. She would no longer have to keep their romance private.

They could go out on dates - actual dates - without worrying that someone might see them. She worried a bit that Denny's feelings might be hurt if he learned she was spotted with another man, but she'd been the best possible girlfriend to Denny for a long time, and it was time for that to end. Stephanie expected her mother would have a hard time accepting the fact that her little girl was involved with a real man, but it would not matter if she did. Stephanie was an adult, she had been an adult for a long time, and she would insist on being allowed to make decisions like an adult. If her mother objected, she'd just have to get over it.

"So tonight is when your mother finds out?" Jon said.

"Yep. Yep yep yep. If you hear an explosion, that's probably Mama." They both laughed. Jon was thrilled by the prospect of loving Stephanie openly. He had a long list of places he wanted to take her and things he wanted them to do. For months, he'd wished that she could spend an entire night with him. That was something they agreed would happen soon. They also had to arrange a time for Jon to meet her mother. The prospect made him nervous, but he felt sure it would go well.

When it was time for Stephanie to leave, she walked home and went straight to the kitchen. She planned to surprise her mother with a home cooked meal. Stephanie did a particularly fine job preparing lasagna using her grandmother's recipe. That dish never failed to put a smile on her mother's face. It seemed like a good way to prepare the unsuspecting woman for Stephanie's Big News.

The smell of hot lasagna was powerful when Stephanie's mother got home. "You cooked? For me?" her mother Regina said.

"I thought it was a good way to celebrate," Stephanie said.

"It's a very nice surprise, dear. Thank you."

Stephanie set the table and served up plates of food, then poured her mother a big glass of red wine. The wine's pleasant aroma tantalized Stephanie's nose, and she wanted a glass for herself. But Regina had no idea that Stephanie had been drinking modest amounts of alcohol for months now, and it seemed like a bad time to add that news to the list of things she was about to learn about her Precious Little Girl. Stephanie poured herself a glass of ice water.

"How was school?" Regina asked.

"Terrible. Awful. The worst ever. Eight hours of torture. Otherwise, it was fine," Stephanie said. Regina laughed. She could see that her daughter was as happy as she'd ever been. Regina was glad that Stephanie had avoided making all the mistakes Regina made as a teenager, when she fell in love with a jerk, got pregnant, and had to drop out of school. She'd feared the same would happen to her daughter, but Stephanie had been a strikingly successful student, and now she had a full-ride scholarship to play soccer at UCLA. Regina's dreams for her daughter were all coming true.

They had pleasant conversation as the meal progressed. The wine helped Regina relax and enjoy this wonderful moment with her wonderful daughter. She was immensely proud. For years, she'd lived in fear that something awful might happen. She'd been very nervous when Stephanie began dating Denny, fearing the handsome young man only wanted Stephanie for sex. He was so polite and seemed so naive that Regina agreed to let him take her to the prom, and then go on other dates afterward. She'd tried to teach Stephanie to be responsible, and she was.

Regina was about to learn Denny wasn't the main man in Stephanie's life.

"Mama, I want to have a discussion with you about something," she said when dinner was over. "Give me a minute to clear the table so we can sit down and talk."

Regina had absolutely no idea what Stephanie wanted to discuss. Maybe it involved going to college in the fall. Maybe it had something to do with her plans for the summer. Maybe she wanted to buy a car. Who knows? She wasn't particularly worried.

"Mama, I want you to feel good about what happened today," Stephanie said. "As I grew up, I could tell how much you wanted me to finish high school, and that's what I've done. You let me know how concerned you were that I might make some of the same mistakes you made when you were a teenager, and you helped me avoid those mistakes. You've been the best mother a girl could have, and I'm grateful."

Regina was a smart woman. She realized Stephanie was paying her compliments because she was about to deliver some questionable news. "Thank you, dear. I appreciate that," Regina said.

"I guess what I'm saying is that for my whole life, you've worked hard to make sure I reached adulthood as a strong, healthy, prosperous woman. I want you to feel like your task is complete. You've succeeded, Mama. I am an adult, and I have been for a while. I want you to feel like you can relax and let me be responsible for my own life."

Hmmm. That did not sound good. Regina was fundamentally unable to wrap her head around the idea that she could allow Stephanie to be responsible for herself. Nope nope nope. Just because the law (and common sense) said Stephanie was an adult didn't mean Regina believed it. She was still Her Little Girl. Period. Full stop. The fact that she was 19 years old meant nothing. Nothing!

"Where is this going?" Regina asked.

"It's going to a couple of places," Stephanie said. "Let's start by talking about your fears that I might get pregnant too soon. You don't have to worry about that, Mama, because I am on birth control. I have an IUD. So take that off the list of things that frighten you."

Birth control! An IUD! Her little Stephanie?

"You and Denny have been having sex," Regina said.

That was true, of course, but Stephanie saw no reason to confirm it. "Mama, there's another thing, and it involves Denny. I am not in love with Denny, and I never will be. I think the world of him, but I went out with Denny because I wanted someone who'd take me to high school social events. The prom. Homecoming. Games. Denny is a perfect gentleman who's going to make some girl very happy someday, but I am not that girl.

"I am in love with someone else."

Boom. She said it. In. Love. With. Someone. Regina felt her world crumbing beneath her feet. Why was this happening? The day had started so well.

"Who?" she asked.

"His name is Jon. He's a student at the university," Stephanie said. She was careful to call Jon a "student" without adding that he was a "graduate student." Regina had more than enough news to digest. The fact that Jon was a few years older was information that could wait for another time.

"How did you meet this Jon?" Regina asked.

Stephanie remembered the day she'd caught Jon gawking at her, then apologizing for being so rude. "That's actually a cute story. I'll tell you sometime. The short version is that he lives two blocks from here. I ran into him walking home from school. Have you noticed how much better I've done with my French classes lately? That's because of Jon. His major is French, and he's been tutoring me."

"You are in love with a French tutor?"

"Yep. That's right," Stephanie said. She thought of Jon as being a lot more than her French tutor, but the idea seemed like a good way to introduce Regina to the notion that Stephanie was in the middle of a full-blown romance.

"Are you sure you love him? You're kind of young to be in love."

Oh please,

Stephanie thought.

I. Am. An. Adult. I'm three years older than you were when you fell in love, Mama.

But she refrained from saying these things out loud, knowing the words would not help the situation. It was best to tell Regina as little as possible so she had time to digest each individual item.

"We are sure we love each other," Stephanie said. "I know a lot about Jon, Mama. He is a wonderful boy." She used the word "boy" deliberately. Regina would learn soon enough that Jon was a man. Baby steps.

Regina's head was spinning, and it had nothing to do with the wine. "Honey, you are too young to be in love," she said.

Holy Mary, Mother of God. Blessed art thou among women. This was like trying to explain algebra to a beagle. It was not reasonable to expect Regina to be reasonable about Her Little Girl. "I understand that you have your own opinion about that, Mama. I don't agree with your opinion, but I respect it." Stephanie was doing an extraordinary job navigating this particular mine field, but she'd had a lot of time to plan her route.

Despite Stephanie's diplomatic explanation, Regina couldn't help what happened next. She began feeling like she was about to have a panic attack. She began feeling agitated. She wanted to say something, but didn't know what to say. Her world no longer made sense.

Stephanie felt sorry for her mother. Regina's entire life had been devoted to protecting her child. Admitting that Stephanie was no longer a child meant Regina no longer had a purpose. "Maybe you'd feel better if you discussed this with your girlfriends, Mama," Stephanie said, knowing that Regina had some very sensible friends who would tell her plainly that it's ridiculous to expect a 19-year-old not to have a boyfriend, and that the fact Stephanie was on birth control was a good thing. A. Very. Good. Thing.

Regina imagined discussing this with her friends. She didn't need to be told that they would agree with Stephanie.

"Am I going to meet this Jon?" Regina said.

"You're going to meet him tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?"

"Yes," Stephanie said. "He's going to drive us to the graduation ceremony. Then he's going to take us out to lunch. Wear something nice. It's a fancy restaurant."

This was all happening fast. Very fast. "Good," Regina said. "I'm anxious to meet the man who's been having an affair with my daughter in secret."

Stephanie rolled her eyes. "I think you should know that Jon isn't the one who insisted that we keep this private. He's been pretty annoyed that I wouldn't let him take me out in public because I didn't want to risk someone seeing us and telling you about it. He's thrilled that this nonsense is over. But it was my decision. He didn't like it, but he went along because he loves me. Let's be clear about that.

"I should mention now that after we drop you off, Jon is going to take me out. We are looking forward to doing things normal couples do. We'll be up late, and I'll be spending the night with Jon. It's something we've wanted for a long time."

That did it. All the tension inside Regina boiled over. "STEPHANIE MARIE! You are NOT spending the night with a man! I forbid it! As long as you live in my house, you have to follow my rules!"

Stephanie sat quietly, making sure she phrased her words carefully. "Mama, I had hoped to avoid having this part of the conversation. This is where I remind you that when it comes to making decisions about men, I've got a much better record than you. I'm not trying to be mean, but you know that's true. And I don't think you want to throw me out. There's plenty of room for me to live with Jon. Are you sure that's what you want?"

Regina sighed. She felt like her rights as a mother were being ripped away. "It seems like you don't trust me very much," she said.

"Mama, let's get real here. If you had known, you would have forbidden me to see Jon. You wouldn't have cared that I'm an adult with the right to make my own decisions. I did it to spare your feelings and to avoid a painful confrontation that you would have lost. I think it was the right decision, and I'd do the same thing again.

"Mama, I think you're focusing on the wrong thing. You should be celebrating the fact that you raised me to adulthood and helped me avoid making the mistakes you've been so afraid of for so many years. You should be happy that I'm using a safe, effective form of birth control that guarantees I won't have an unplanned pregnancy. You should be happy that this fall I'm going to one of the world's premier universities, where I'm going to play for the best college soccer team in the country. I won't have to struggle the way you struggled when you were my age.

"The war is over, Mama. You won. It's time to declare victory and bring your soldiers home."

Regina knew she was beaten. She knew Stephanie was right. She knew this was an argument she couldn't win. And so, she began to cry. She cried for all the years she'd spent worrying. Losing that worry felt like losing a companion she'd known for most of her life. Intellectually, she knew it was true that she should be celebrating, but that wasn't something she could do. Not yet. And so, she cried.

"I think I should get you another glass of wine, Mama," Stephanie said.

.......................................................

Jon was careful when he decided how to dress for his first meeting with Regina. He knew the importance of first impressions. Everything Stephanie told him about her mother made Jon believe Regina would be very suspicious of him, so he did what he could to ease her mind. He chose a casual suit without a tie; nice, but not overly formal. He shaved, brushed his hair, and used enough mouthwash to freshen the breath of a whale.

"You look nice," Stephanie said when she opened the door.

"Thanks, so do you," he said. Jon resisted the impulse to hug Stephanie. He didn't know how Regina was taking the news that her daughter was involved with a man, so he felt that public displays of affection were probably a bad idea.

Stephanie was wearing one of Regina's business suits. She looked sharp. Stephanie and her mother were almost exactly the same height and weight; Regina was just a few pounds heavier. This meant they had no trouble wearing each other's clothes.

"I'd like you to meet my mother," Stephanie said. "Mama, this is Jon. Jon, this is my mama."

"Call me Regina."

"It's wonderful to finally meet you, Regina," Jon said. "Stephanie says you are the best mother any girl ever had."

Regina looked at Stephanie. "You told him to say that, didn't you?"

"Not on your life. He's just heard me say it over and over," Stephanie said.

The three sat in the living room, and it was obvious that Regina was a nervous wreck. She was also dressed in a business suit, and one might have guessed she was a convicted criminal about to attend her sentencing hearing. In a way, that's how she felt. Seeing Jon in person made it all more real. He was handsome, young, well dressed and polite. She hated him.

Jon was struck by the strong resemblance between Stephanie and her mother. They looked more like sisters than a mother and daughter. He decided to pay Regina a compliment. "Regina, I'm amazed that the resemblance between you and Steph is so striking," he said. "You look exactly alike."

Regina rolled her eyes. "That's bullshit," she said. "Stephanie, you didn't tell me your boyfriend is a bullshit artist."

"Mother! That was uncalled for!" Stephanie said. "Jon was paying you a compliment, and you insulted him. You need to apologize right now!"

Regina was silent, and Jon wasn't surprised. "I have an idea," he said. "Let's take a picture as a souvenir of the day Steph graduates. Steph, would you sit next to your mother, please?"

Stephanie sat down next to Regina on the sofa. Neither woman looked particularly happy at that moment, but when Jon took out his camera, they managed to smile. A little.

"There. Perfect," Jon said. He put the picture on the screen of his cellphone, then handed it to Stephanie. "Now, would you ladies look at this picture and tell me what you think about the way you look side by side? Regina, I may have said that wrong. Maybe it's more accurate to say that Stephanie will look exactly like you in a few years, and that she will still look beautiful and young."

The photo showed Jon was right. Yes, he was trying to give Regina a compliment, but he'd been taught that the only compliments that mattered were ones that happened to be completely true. And it was true that Regina, like her daughter, was a beautiful woman who looked fit, and she looked younger than her years.

"Jon, I'm sorry," Regina finally said. "This is hard on me."

"I know it is, and I'm sorry for that," Jon said.

Because Jon's affluent parents were careful to teach him all about etiquette and social graces, Jon knew that what he needed to do at that moment was make small talk. Regina was a mess. Talking about inconsequential things was the best way to put her at ease. He mentioned that Stephanie was an excellent student of French. That he'd seen her play soccer and was very impressed. That UCLA was a fine school - better than the one Jon attended, although his college was first-rate, too. Yada yada yada. He asked polite questions that got Regina to talk about what it was like raising Stephanie from childhood.

The minutes ticked by. Eventually, it was time to leave.

Jon held the door as Regina, then Stephanie, got into his vehicle. His two-seat roadster wasn't suitable for this trip, so he drove his big, luxurious SUV. Regina sat down and saw immediately that Jon had a nicer vehicle than she'd ever owned. She glanced over at the odometer and saw he'd driven it less than 6,000 miles - that meant he'd gotten it brand new. Stephanie hadn't said Jon had money, but that seemed to be the case. Stephanie didn't see any reason to tell Regina that Jon came from one of the wealthiest families in America. She'd learn that as she learned the rest of Jon's story. There was no hurry. Baby steps.
