Ralph slowed to glance in the window, not really interested in buying, but enjoying the smell of leather, the warm browns, tans and even a dark green of the jackets and coats on display. A dozen people passed by with casual indifference, the Holidays always a time of bustle and life... and loneliness.

Ralph took a deep breath of the fragrant smell and then strolled on, stands filling the middle of the hallway displaying everything from phone cases and calendars to remote controlled drones and perfume.

He let his eyes wander, not really shopping for something specific, but just to browse, to enjoy the illusion of being in the company of the crowd. A round mirror on a counter caught his eye, his dark brown eyes staring back at him beneath the unruly mop of black hair.

"We have a buy two, get one free special!" the young, bubbly brunette said excitedly when Ralph paused.

Ralph glanced up at the display of hair dyes in every shade imaginable and smiled at the idea of what he'd look like with green or platinum blond hair.

"No thank you," Ralph replied politely, "I'm just looking today."

"No worries," the brunette replied, her attitude shifting instantly to boredom when it was obvious he wasn't a potential customer as she turned away from him.

Ralph gave a tight lipped smile and bit back any comments while hurrying on. He passed a Christmas village set up between the escalators, a gingerbread house with Santa ensconced on a throne, two petite women probably still in High School in elf costumes to either side to greet a long line of moms and children.

More than one of the children looked less than thrilled at the prospect of meeting dear old Saint Nick, their mothers gripping and arm or hand to drag them along towards their impending doom.

Ralph smiled at how morbid and grim his mind seemed to be and took an escalator up to the second floor, a dozen different food vendors lining the walls. His eyes chanced upon a woman who seemed to be in her late 30's or early 40's, a tight bright red tube dress clinging to her curves as her black corset high heels clicked across the floor.

He tried to be as unobtrusive as possible, but still let his eyes follow her as she cut a path through the crowd with a selection of shopping bags draped over an arm, a small smile playing across his face at the sight of her too tight dress molding to her ass as it moved and swayed with every step.

In moments the woman was gone, the ebb and flow of the crowd sweeping her along the current of humanity and from sight. Ralph turned towards the food court with a smile, window shopping at the mall always entertaining with such a variety of things put so willingly on display.

He lay claim to a half a chicken and Caesar salad, ignoring how small the tiny chicken must have been or the rather wilted state of a few pieces of lettuce before working his way towards a table that would give him a good view of the passing crowd.

"Ralph?" a soprano voice said in sudden surprise.

Ralph jerked and turned, his eyes going wide in shock when he saw a woman sitting at one of the cookie cutter tables bolted to the food court deck.

She had on a knit Christmas sweater, one that would have done itself proud in many a holiday ugly sweater contest, her brown hair just past her shoulders, narrow, upturned nose and wide mouth just as he remembered. He barely glanced at the woman sitting next to her, his wide, surprised eyes staring into her blue eyes with a matching expression of amazement.

"Ja... Jamie?" Ralph stammered.

"I knew it was you!" Jamie said in delight, "Oh, my god, how are you!"

"I'm... I'm good," Ralph stammered and glanced at the woman sitting across from Jamie who was staring at him suspiciously.

She was taller than Jamie with a thinner build and tight top with a plunging neckline that her assets didn't need to draw the eye downward, and light blond hair cut in a page boy bob. A woman that Ralph was sure normally got the majority of glances of the two women at the table, although he found himself staring unabashed at Jamie.

"Oh... Ralph, this is Mirranda, my best friend. Mirranda, this is Ralph, my friend I told you about who I used to go camping and hiking with!"

"Hi," Mirranda replied noncommittally while Ralph tried not to flinch at the word 'friend'.

"Do you live here in Beaverton now?" Jamie asked delightedly.

"Ahhh, no," Ralph replied, eyes still wide while he gazed down at someone he hadn't seen in over ten years, "I... I have a place in Scappoose."

"Sit down!" Jamie said the moment he finished, Mirranda giving her a quick, disbelieving glance.

"No, that's fine," Ralph replied after noticing that quick glance, "These tables really aren't meant for more than tw..."

"Sit!" Jamie insisted and moved her tray that was littered with the remains of a bowl of chow mein, "Seriously, you are not going anywhere until you tell me what you've been up to!"

Ralph glanced at Mirranda who gave him a tight lipped smile before shifting her tray as well, Ralph smiling apologetically at both women before taking a seat in the hard, plastic chair.

"You're living in Scappoose, where are you working?" Jamie asked the instant he had sat down.

"Just... getting by," Ralph replied evasively, Mirranda giving a slight sniff.

Ralph ignored her and focused on Jamie's beaming smile, her cheeks dimpling while she grinned at him.

"How about you?" Ralph asked, "I thought you were still living in Seattle!"

"Oh... I moved down here a year ago," Jamie replied with a shrug, "Remember I used to work for Fred's?"

"Sure," Ralph said with a nod.

"I was offered a promotion to work in product sourcing, but I had to move down here to take it," Jamie explained, "I mean... duh... it's cheaper here than in Seattle and I was going to be making more money too... so yea... I moved down here!"

"You still get out camping?" Ralph asked.

"The coast," Jamie replied with another shrug, "Mirranda and I stayed at a KOA if you can believe that! I mean, there was a cool shipwreck on the beach across from where we were staying, but yea... nothing like we used to do.

"What about you?"

"I've been doing bits and pieces of the PCT, sailing on the Columbia, kayak camping on the islands. This year I managed to hike from Timberline all the way north close to Troute Lake where we used to go camping at," Ralph said.

"Timberline... like Mt Hood Timberline?" Jamie asked in surprise, "How long did that take?"

In minutes Jamie and Ralph were talking as if ten years had only been a day or two, Jamie glossing over any of his questions on past boyfriends while Ralph simply left it at his having just ended a long term relationship when Jamie had asked if he were dating.

"I can't believe you two used to go camping and skinny dipping and hot springing and you never dated!" Mirranda said almost thirty minutes later, Jamie turning a bright red while Ralph choked on a sip of coke he had just taken, "Jamie, we need to get going if you want to run to Tannasbourne."

The mood between Ralph and Jamie seemed to pop with the slight glare Mirranda cast in Ralph's direction.

"Oh... yea, I'm sorry, but we really do need to get going," Jamie said apologetically.

"No," Ralph replied, "That's fine, it's been really good seeing you again!"

"Yea..." Jamie said while looking at him and then suddenly reached for her purse to dig through it for a moment.

When she came back up for air she had a red marker and reached out to seize Ralph's hand and pull it towards her. Ralph tried to ignore the feel of Jamie's cool fingers holding onto his hand and watched her scribble a number onto his palm.

"Call me tomorrow," Jamie said as she stood up with a smile, "We can go get lunch and really catch up!"

"Yea... sure!" Ralph said while Mirranda stared daggers at him before they both hurried away.

Ralph stared off into the crowd for several minutes without seeing a single person after Jamie and Mirranda had sunk feet first out of sight when they took the escalators down, Jamie giving him a final glance and wave just before he lost sight of her.

Ten years before he and Jamie had been almost inseparable, hiking and camping around Greenwater, Mt Rainer, Corral Pass and Snoqualmie, two years of adventures... which on occasion had included a few cold mountain lakes and a hot spring or three without much in the way of cloths.

He coughed back a laugh and smiled while admitting to himself that going skinny dipping was probably a bit more than 'much in the way of clothes'.

"Or would that be a bit less..." he said under his breath, a passing couple giving him a glance before hurrying away.

The smile faded and he glanced down at the palm of his hand, the clamminess already making the red marker bleed and smear. He used his off hand to pull out his phone and awkwardly open the lock screen. A few more awkward moments and he had the number entered.

Two years of adventures for him to realize that men and women couldn't be 'just friends'. That he hadn't wanted to be 'just friends'. And Jamie hadn't wanted more.

He made a fist, his fingernails digging into the palm of his hand and stood up, chicken and Ceaser salad barely touched, threw away his trash and made for the nearest restroom. As soon as he entered he headed for a sink and reached out to the soap dispenser before hesitating.

He stared at the palm of his hand, the ink smearing even more.

"Hey bud, mind if I use the sink," a voice said from behind.

"Yea... sure," Ralph replied, repeating the same inane words he had said earlier and walked back out of the restroom without even glancing back to see who had spoken.

Ralph didn't even register the drive home, the traffic on 26 or Corn Pass normally so aggravating not even piercing through the turmoil he felt. He took a right just as he was entering town before finally parking in a spot across from the moorage. Even the walk from the lot across the road and onto the docks until he reached his boat didn't really make an impression.

Ralph threw himself down onto the padded couch on the port side, the boat rocking gently with the quiet, soft sounds of any boat tied alongside a dock or at anchor.

"Fuck," he swore softly and scrubbed his fingers through his hair.

Eventually he got up and made his way to the aft cabin that he had converted into an office, intending to log in remotely and do at least a little work, but instead finding the old file folders of pictures from years ago of he and Jamie crawling through Dead Horse Cave by Troute Creek, standing next to the steaming pools formed by natural stones stacked in a rough rectangle and attached circle at Goldmyer, or them standing on top a mountain at Cave Ridge. Happy and smiling faces, arms around each other, more often than not smeared in dirt or covered in sweat from which ever adventure they had found themselves on that day.

He felt the ache, and the anger in the pit of his stomach, feelings he thought he had left far behind him.

Finally, he logged off the computer without even trying to do any work, the dual side by side monitors going black while he stared out the side portal. He listened to the creak of lines and soft thud and squeak of hull against fender, the gentle motion and quiet sounds doing nothing to calm his mood.

The next morning he woke up early before the sun had even risen and logged in, needing to do at least some work remotely for the day. He had the luxury of being able to set his own hours, to work at his own pace, but there were still expectations to be met each week.

Three hours later the Catalina rocked and snubbed at the mooring lines, a passing boat kicking up more wake than was probably allowed. Ralph locked the computer and made his way forward, taking time to shower and fix a light breakfast, glancing at his palm as he sipped his coffee to note the phone number from the previous day now washed away. Halfway through his second cup of coffee Ralph pulled out his phone to bring up and stare at a number he never expected to have again.

Ralph felt the need to go do an hour of laps at the pool, get the kayak in the water and paddle for ten miles, take the rest of the day off and drive to Saddle Mountain and hike to the top like he had been intending to do for weeks. To move. To do something. To wear himself to exhaustion and forget that number staring back at him from his phone.

He hit send, the soft errrp, errrp filling his ear as he listened.

"Hello?" Jamie's voice said on the fourth ring.

"Hey, how are you?" Ralph asked.

"Hiiiiiii!" Jamie squealed in delight, "Oh my god, I can not believe we saw each other at the mall!"

"Yea," Ralph replied with a chuckle, "Pretty crazy, huh."

"I'm sorry Mirranda was being a pain," Jamie said nearly cutting Ralph off in her haste, "But... fine... whatever... where are we having lunch at?"

"Huh?" Ralph asked.

"Where are we having lunch?" Jamie demanded excitedly, "And I'm not taking no for an answer!

"I looked at Google Maps, I can be in Scappoose in thirty minutes so pick someplace for lunch!"

"Jamie..." Ralph protested halfheartedly.

"But me no buts, Ralph!" Jamie shot back, Ralph's heart skipping a beat at hearing something he had heard Jamie saying constantly but had completely forgotten.

"There's not a hell of a lot of places to have lunch here," Ralph replied, "Mark's closed... ya got Mc D's or.. Futlano's or... there's a bar on 30 I haven't even ever gone in."

"Perfect, bring your darts!" Jamie shot back, "What's the name?"

"Shit... I don't... I don't even know," Ralph said while glancing around the cabin, "Ahhh, it has a teepee on the side... ahhh... The TeePee maybe... the Wig... BigWig... it's the WigWam!"

"WigWam," Jamie said incredulously, "Really, the WigWam and it has like an... Indian teepee outside?"

"Yea," Ralph replied with a laugh, "Like I said, I've never been in there, but... unless you want SubWay, or Starbucks or DQ..."

There was a moment of silence, Ralph wondering what Jamie was doing before she replied.

"Allright, I'll be there in twenty eight minutes according to Google," Jamie said matter of factly, "If it's to god awful we can just go to Starbucks!"

"Sounds good," Ralph said.

"Ralph..." Jamie said, her voice suddenly hesitant.

"Yea," Ralph replied, his stomach in knots at hearing her again.

"I've... I've missed you," Jamie said softly and then suddenly became much more businesslike, "I'll see you in a half hour!"

The line suddenly went dead with Ralph simply holding it to his ear for a few more moments before taking a deep breath. After another moment he made his way all the way forward to his bedroom, the bow narrowing sharply for the bed to fit into the sharp V. He found a pair of khaki slacks as well as a tight fitting Under Armor shirt that he thought showed off his shoulders after spending so much time kayaking every week. He grabbed a pair of boat shoes and after a final glance in the mirror climbed went forward and up the companionway of the Catalina and on deck.

With the gray, overcast skies and wet, clinging cold the docks were deserted, Ralph locking the companionway before climbing off the Catalina and making his way to the key coded gate. After crossing the road and reaching his Tacoma he climbed into the cab and simply sat looking out through the cold, misting rain.

It was still at least another twenty minutes, probably closer to forty with the drive on Corn Pass to deal with until he could expect Jamie, the drive to bar maybe a ten minute trip.

"Shit... the darts," Ralph said when he remembered Jamie mentioning bar darts, all the evenings they had spent in different dives playing in tournaments coming back.

With a sigh he started the truck, the darts if he even still had them stuck in some random box in a storage unit he kept all the furniture and extra... stuff... he had accumulated but no longer had room, nor even a real need for. After another deep breath he put the truck in drive and took the backroads along the levee, driving leisurely on the deserted road until finally reaching Highway 30 and just a minute or two later pulled into the parking lot outside the bar.

He got out and made his way to the door, only then realizing he'd forgotten even a rain jacket as the misting rain covered his shirt in rhinestones of sparkling dew.

When he stepped inside he glanced around curiously, the bar like so many others he had been in over the years, a small raised stage at the front with monitors for karaoke, a long bar along the right hand side and a few scattered tables, even two plastic tip electronic dart boards along the far back wall.

At noon on a weekday he was the only customer in the entire place as the older, thin, graying woman behind the bar glanced up at him.

"Can I get you something?" the woman asked sharply.

"I'm... I'm supposed to be meeting someone in a bit... maybe a coke and a menu?" Ralph replied.

Ralph gave a polite nod and smile when the bartender brought over a glass of coke and a laminated menu before she returned to taking inventory without so much as a word. The menu was much what he'd have expected, burgers with the option of cheese and bacon, corn dogs, fries, mozzarella sticks, wings, and a half dozen other offerings that seemed equally unappealing.

Ralph ordered mozzarella sticks and then pulled out his phone to wait, passing the time checking the news and his socials. Thiry minutes later he glanced up at the sound of the bell over the door jingling to see Jamie walking in.

Ralph stared as she glanced around curiously. She was dressed plainly in jeans and a fitted blue long sleeve T shirt, the half dozen buttons at the neckline left undone for a glimpse of cleavage. He shook his head at seeing her wearing her Teva's, her insistence on never wearing socks and shoes no matter the weather another forgotten bit that sent an ache through his chest.

She smiled the moment she saw him sitting at the table and hurried over while taking off her jacket.

"Nice place," Jamie said the moment she arrived to drape her Columbia jacket over the back of a chair.

"Best in town," Ralph said and stood up.

Jamie reached out and took him in a hug, pulling his body tight against hers while he tried to ignore the feel of her breasts pressing against him. After a moment he reached around to give her a hug back that was just as tight as the one she gave him.

When they finally broke apart Jamie seemed to glance around almost nervously and then smiled at the bartender as she came over.

"If you have Alaskan Amber I'll take one of those," Jamie said before the bartender slipped away.

Both Ralph and Jamie seemed to hesitate, unsure if they were going to sit and if so who was going to sit first. Finally Ralph gave a nervous laugh and sat, Jamie quickly following suite.

"It's... it's weird, isn't it," Jamie finally asked with a quick glance up to catch Ralph's eye before looking away.

"Meeting you at the mall?" Ralph replied with a nod, "Yea, not something I'd have ever bet on!"

"That..." Jamie began before trailing off.

"So how much shit did Mirranda give me after you two left yesterday?" Ralph said to fill in the awkward gap.

"I'm sorry!" Jamie said with a laugh, "I wasn't you, I promise! It's just that we had planned for just the two of us to be out shopping together!"

"Ohhhh, so she did give me shit!" Ralph accused.

Jamie rolled her eyes and laughed along with Ralp until glancing down at the table.

"How is it that it seems like we haven't seen each other in only a few days instead of ten years?" Jamie asked and then glanced up at Ralph, "How is it that we didn't call and talk to each other in ten years?"

Ralph took a long, slow breath and then gave a crooked smile.

"I was moving down hear with Shara, you were dating Bill and Julie..." Ralph said softly.
