The next day was Friday. Matt was in class and working, and I had my three non-econ classes that day. I arrived home around 4pm, tired but nervous about dinner. What should I wear? How dressy should I be?
I looked through the clothes in my closet. In the end I decided to go casual and picked out a maroon shirt dress that fell just below my knees. I slipped on a pair of flats and slipped them on. I went to the bathroom and pulled my hair back into a ponytail. Looking in the mirror I smiled a bit. I looked good in this low-key dress. I unbuttoned one more button. It was still tasteful, but just a hint of the top of my breasts showed now.
I gathered a few things, my phone, my wallet, and my econ textbook, and dropped them in my backpack. I walked out of the apartment and put the professor's address into my phone to request an Uber.
Thirty minutes later the driver pulled up to beautiful modern house in a heavily wooded residential area. As I thanked the driver, I thought to myself that the professor and his wife have good taste - and have done really well for themselves.
I rang the doorbell and waited for a moment. The professor opened the door and gave me a friendly "Please come in April." I smiled politely but nervously, never having been invited to dinner with a professor before. I glanced around as I stepped into the entryway. There were several beautiful drawings on the wall, abstract nudes.
Just then the professor's wife stepped into the entryway and shook my hand "Good evening April, I'm Abbey, Ted's wife." I gave her an almost shy smile as I shook her hand. She was about my height, early 50s I would guess, and stunning - one of those people who attracted, no demanded, attention when she walked into a room.
The professor gave a polite smile "Please join us for a drink? Dinner is almost ready."
I followed them into a room with floor to ceiling windows looking out over the city. Abbey smiled a bit as she saw my reaction. "You like the view?" I nodded, commenting "I didn't realize we were this high up on the hill. The view is amazing!"
The professor asked "white wine ok?"
I nodded and he handed me a glass. I glanced around and noticed more artwork, similar to that in the entryway. Almost all were figures, some were nudes, others clothed. All were beautifully done.
The professor smiled a bit, watching me. "Do you like the artwork?"
I nodded "Yes, it's very beautiful."
Abbey did all of these. She's quite an artist. She's had some prominent shows in New York too.
Abbey shook her head "He's always embarrassing me. I'm not that good. I just love to draw and sketch."
I looked at her "Are you kidding? They're amazing!"
Just then a timer sounded in the kitchen, and I was invited to the dining room for dinner.
We had a lovely dinner of fish, roast vegetables, and fresh homemade bread with plenty of conversation about the research group, economic policy, and economic research. By the end of dinner I had agreed to join the Professor's research group to help him and a PhD student on a project on the modern-day economic impacts of the 1908 flu pandemic. I was on cloud nine. It was such a huge opportunity and honor!
Throughout dinner Abbey had been mostly quiet, occasionally offering commentary in the conversation, but mostly observing us, or more correctly, me much of the time. I blushed a few times when I saw her seeming to study me as the professor and I talked.
