Jillian's Trauma
Josh was surprised the next day when he visited Dr. Ann Pembroke the first time after his father called his old high school friend to help Josh manage a problem at high school. When the tall eighteen-year-old young man stepped off the elevator on the fifth floor, he followed the arrows to Ann's office and gently opened the door to see a tall girl he remembered from his sophomore year in high school. Jillian was a senior when he was a sophomore, that he met briefly a few times, but they never were close friends or dated.
Jillian stood from her chair behind the lavish dark walnut reception desk and said, "Hi, Mr. Taft. I haven't seen you since I graduated two years ago. You look like you've shot up three or four inches since then." Josh had already noticed she didn't appear as tall as he remembered from school and realized that he used to be short for his age and that she wasn't so tall as he thought.
He was surprised she came over to him and opened her arms and kissed his cheek before saying, "I almost asked you to a Sadie Hawkins day dance when I was a senior, and you were a sophomore, but I was afraid all the kids would start saying I was robbing the cradle. It was a huge mistake that I asked Tom Malone instead."
Josh remembered reading that Jillian married Tom in late June after graduating but never learned the cause that severed their marriage before Christmas. Before Jillian had a chance to inform Josh of her sorry marriage and rapid divorce, he heard his father's old friend, Dr. Ann Pembroke ask, "Are you Adam Taft's son, Josh? Come on in and sit. And tell me about your mom and dad. We were good friends when we were school chums."
Ann knew all about Josh's refusal to shower after gym class school problem and already made arrangements with her old friend Dr. Carl Whipple, the Superintendent of Schools to provide a medical reason for Josh to be excused from all gymnastics classes for the remainder of the year and reinstate Josh for graduation. Frankly, Ann thought threatening Josh from graduation seemed harsh to her, but she promised to get to the bottom of his issue and report back to Carl when her consultations ended.
Ann told Josh how she graduated from high school with Josh's parents and were best friends for twelve years until she went to Stanford University and stayed on to become a psychiatrist.
"By the time I returned to Portland and opened my practice, your parents were working long hard hours to get their business going, and I was struggling to establish my new practice. They were happily married with a new baby boy, and I already had a five-year-old daughter without a husband. Neither they nor I had the time to renew our relationships."
Josh knew he had to explain his defiance to shower with the other young men after gym class and contemplated telling some ugly lie to cover his phobia, but when Josh sat in the loveseat with Ann sitting at his side with her petite hand in his, he opened up and told her that he was ashamed to admit his privacy issue.
"Dr. Pembroke," he began until she immediately interrupted and said, "Josh, please call me Ann. I'm more than just you're doctor today, I'm a long-time family friend that can help you today and for the next few weeks until you recognize what's happening and why it's happening."
Josh relaxed with her kind and assuring statement and proceeded to explain how he disliked being shorter all through school until he finally started to spurt up the last couple of years. He talked some, and she interjected questions along the way, beginning with, "Josh, how tall are you now, about six feet?"
He said almost. "The last time I was measured I was 5'11, but that was in September, and I think I've grown more since then."
"And, Josh, what do you weigh now, and tell me about your trouble at school?"
Josh felt weird talking to a woman more than twice his age, as she wrapped her hand around his fingers, but he knew he had to communicate his issue if he ever expected help. He told Ann that he weighed about 155 pounds and that he had always been reticent to undress in public except for when his mother bathed him until he was able to shower alone.
"I was probably eight or ten then. I have always been shy to undress in public because I feel I'm inadequate down there, and I feared guys would talk and tell their sisters, and pretty soon all of the girls would know, and who knows what might happen then. It's not complicated, it's just that I worry girls won't date me or that they'll chuckle behind my back, and I've chosen to avoid the criticism, which unfortunately is true."
Ann squeezed on Joshes fingers and said, "Young man, most boys have the same concerns, but 95% of the time they are unfounded phobias that disappear after they pass through puberty. Some girls have the same issue when their little breasts develop slowly. They believe that men prefer large bouncy orbs and sometimes take steps to mask their perceived problem. You know that some teenage girls stuff their bras to make their boobs appear larger, but the truth of the matter is most women soon learn that bigger is not better."
Josh knew that, but he wasn't concerned about girls and how they looked better when they had robust breasts that pushed against their tight sweaters; he was worried about himself and his small package not the size of women's breasts.
Ann knew she was going to need to see Josh's package before she could eliminate the possibility that he may be one of the few men that had a significant problem with a lack of genital size or potency. She had never had a patient like Josh except during her medical training at Stanford, and she remembered how rare it was for a man to be so inadequate that sex was impossible for him or unrewarding to a female.
Ann wanted to examine Josh, but she'd need a witness to be present and Jillian would have been suitable, but she was Josh's friend, and that wasn't commonsensical for either. She had overheard Josh and Jillian talking, and she knew the complete story behind Jillian's horrid marriage and the pain inflicted on her by Tom Malone.
