Thank you for reading my story, I hope that you enjoy and would love to hear your thoughts. Mica xx Yorkshire, England.
I had contacted the university and said that I had a room available that I would be willing to let to a university student during term time.
They had responded with a form to fill in, and the form had many questions on what I would or would not find acceptable. I replied that I don't care where someone comes from, but I require a basic understanding of English. I will not allow smoking or vaping. I buy the food and it will not be halal as I find that an unacceptable way to treat an animal. I will buy and offer my guests pork products such as bacon, sausages etc. If someone is vegan, as opposed to vegetarian, then that is their choice, but I will make no special provision for it. I will accept any gender or ethnicity, but that my belief is that there are only two genders and that they cannot be changed. If someone is gay, then that is fine, that is their choice.
I didn't hear anything for a while, I guessed my straightforward approach didn't meet with their liberal leftist ideals. Then I received a phone call, could they come and look at the house and proposed accommodation? I said yes and then agreed a time.
The door bell rang.
"Hello, we are from the university." It was two people, a male and female, both wearing those multi coloured pins that they seem to favour. I expected it to be a short visit.
"Come in. Would you like a cup of tea?"
"You know what," the girl said, "I would, I would love a cup of tea."
"Me too" the lad added.
"Come on through. My kitchen is sort of my day room. There is a table with chairs and a small sofa, it is basically the back half of the house, so I sort of tend to live in here during the day."
I filled up and put the kettle on.
"Yorkshire is what I have and cows milk. Is that okay?"
They both nodded. Good start, I couldn't be doing with any of that oat nonsense, milk comes from cows. The end. I made three cups of tea and we sat at the table and talked.
"I was surprised when you called me," I said, "I suspected my requirements wouldn't fit."
"Oh no, gosh, no," the girl said. "No, we look for obvious signs of homophobia, or ethnic or gender bias, we didn't see that. It does take a while. We do basic background checks also before we make contact."
"Good job too. This is my home and I am opening it up. It matters to me that I will be able to basically get on with whoever comes to live with me, so, yes I love a bacon sandwich, it would be awful for someone to live with me that finds that offensive."
"Quite understand that. You will be happy to provide meals or will you expect them to eat out?"
"I am here every day. I eat breakfast lunch and tea. It is sensible for me to prepare for two as easily as just one, so if they are happy to eat what I eat, then, yes. I am also happy for them to prepare their own foods in here. I am not happy for them to prepare food in their room. Snacks, like crisps, are fine, but no microwaving. If they get a takeaway, that is fine, but they eat it in here, not in their room."
"Okay that seems reasonable, and that will all be included in the rent?"
"Yes. The rent will include what food of mine they want. I will not make any adjustments for if they don't want my food."
"All right. Well, may we look first at the room?"
"Yes of course, follow me."
I lead them out of the day room and upstairs.
"This is the room. I have two others that I may also offer the university for next year, but I want to just do the one room to start, to make sure there are no issues."
I opened the door. It was a reasonable sized double. A bed, a chest of drawers and a chair by a small desk. There was a reading lamp on the desk, and another on each of the bedside units.
"The bathroom is directly opposite, I have my own ensuite, so this bathroom is theirs to use. Obviously, I expect hygiene standards to be met. There is a toilet brush provided. The shower is over the bath, the door has a lock."
They had a good look around the room, checked that the windows opened and that the door shut correctly, then they wandered around the bathroom, it is not that big, so the two of them pretty much got in each other's way.
We went back downstairs and they said that the only thing I needed to do was get a fire extinguished in the hall, and another upstairs. They asked if there was a sitting room that the lodger could use, and I said, yes there is a lounge and a dining room at the front of the house, and that they could use them whenever they wanted. I said that I had wifi and they would be given the password, all that I required was that they did not access illegal content.
They produced some forms, and subject to the fire extinguishers, I was good to go. My student would arrive first week in September. I would receive their details towards the middle of August. I would be paid each term in advance. Students were expected to go home between terms, but they could stay if I agreed and subject to separate arrangements out with the college.
Time moved on to August. I managed to find a few spare sets of bedding and towels in the summer sales, and then the letter arrived. My lodger was to be John, aged eighteen and from a place called Hornsea on the east coast. Oh, the North sea was such a cold sea, not a welcoming coast at all in my opinion, but then I guess you got used to what you grew up in. I was a West Yorkshire lass and could make Yorkshire Puddings without even thinking, they just happened.
John arrived with his mum and dad, and I welcomed them and showed them around. Whilst dad and John ferried John's stuff up to his new home for the next three months, his mum, Mary, and I sat in the day room drinking tea.
"Thank you," she said, "his room is lovely, and I love the idea of this day room, I wish we had one, but our house is newer and so much smaller."
"I think this used to be two rooms, but someone who had it before made one big room across the back, it is one of the things that attracted me to it, plus, we are not on a main road, so the traffic noise is low. Luckily, even though we are not far from the airport, we are not in a flight path, so we rarely hear the airplanes."
"You have a lovely house, John should feel very comfortable here."
"Well I hope so. John will be my first guest, I have never hosted before, so it will be a bit of a learning curve for me."
"Well Mica we honestly have no worries and are sure that he will be looked after properly. It is always difficult when your first born leaves the nest."
"Indeed Mary, let's hope he settles in."
Eventually they left and John fussed around in his room, and I just left him to it. He knew where the loo and stuff were, he knew where the day room was, this was his home now, he didn't need me fussing over him like a broody mother hen.
He tapped on the day room door, "is it okay if I get a drink?" he asked.
"John, you live here. This is your home, the only door you ever need to knock on is my bedroom door," oops that came out wrong. "If you want a drink, just come in and get one, if you just want to sit in here with your laptop, then do. Now then, lamb chops and mash for tea, okay?"
