I was excited about my first job after moving to a new town. I had stayed close to home for several years after high school, but I was ready for a change, so I packed up and headed to the city for more opportunities and new experiences. I had done a lot of jobs, but nothing ever seemed to be fulfilling, and the pay was certainly not as good as I hoped for.
I decided to stop just going from interview to interview for jobs that I really had no interest in, so I decided to check out the for help wanted adds in the newspaper. After several weeks of looking, I finally found an ad for a job that looked interesting. The ad said, good pay in an expanding field with great pay and some travel required. I took down the phone number and made a call. Robert answered and seemed really interested in giving me an interview, so we set up a time for the following Saturday when he was free to interview me.
Rob, as he preferred to be called was 42 but looked much younger, tanned and you could see from his clothing that he was pretty fit. He was very personable and made me feel relaxed as we chatted about the job and the duties entailed. He told me the pay that I would start at which was definitely more than I expected. The hours were full time with a couple of Saturdays required whenever the route had to do an overnight out of town. Rob explained that he was a contractor for a magazine distribution company and that he had a contract for a set route that involved traveling to several towns within the route area.
He asked if I could work from 6:30 am to 4 pm and a half day on Saturdays a couple of times a month. I told him that was alright with me because I wasn't a night owl. I asked the usual questions about raises, vacation and sick leave which he explained to me and all of it was acceptable to me. He said that I could start the following Monday and gave me the address to the warehouse where we would meet to load the truck for the route.
We met at the warehouse on Monday, he showed me where to get the necessary equipment like, crates and the forms we used to fill out for each store we served and inventory. We loaded everything pretty fast and headed out to the first town we were going to for the days route. Rob liked to talk, and he keep things light and relaxed. The job was pretty interesting because we met a lot of people, and I learned how to collect out of date magazines and how to inventory them for credit for the company and the stores we serviced.
