Last week I was driving along I-70 just outside of Indianapolis. It was dark and I thought I saw a person walking along the road, so I pulled over to see if they needed a ride. It turned out to be a guy around 30 years old and he was heading to Missouri to his sister's house. He had lost his job, his car got re-possessed and at this point, he was just heading to his sisters to live with her and get a fresh start on life. I told him that the town I was going to deliver in was only 30 miles from his sisters town.
We drove until about ten o'clock that night and I told him that I was going to stop at the truck stop and get a shower and something to eat. I asked him if he wanted to grab a shower and have something to eat with me. He told me he would, but he didn't have any money. I told him I'd buy his supper and I would tell the girl at the fuel desk he was my co-driver, and that way he got a free shower.
After the shower we sat in the restaurant and chatted about what had brought him to the point in his life that he was at right now. He told me that the factory he was working at closed down and he was out of a job. And since he hadn't worked there for very long, he didn't get any unemployment. He had a girlfriend, but as soon as there was no money coming in, she was heading out. He tried and tried to find a job, but wasn't having any luck. He decided to head out to Missouri. That morning as he was packing his car the repo man came and took his car. So he grabbed what belongings he needed and left the rest on the curb.
