Everyone got busy with finals approaching. Their first year at the Academy was coming to an end, and soon they were looking into planning what they would wear for the end of year ball as well as talking about what things they wanted to do during the festival. The festival was mostly made up of events that the professors or students ran, with booths and food places set up by businesses that supported the Academy and wanted to get more business for next year.

Their group enjoyed food, took part in some games, watched movies, and had fun. It was one of the lightest times Kageo could think of during their time at the school other than the night before the solstice break. There was something looming over their heads, though, as the school year ended. There was danger on the horizon, and they couldn't tell when it would come for them.

If Kageo could do anything about making sure he was the only one directly in the path of harm, he would do it. Of course, he also knew that if Walt could do something about making sure Kageo wasn't the only one shouldering the danger, he would, so they were working against each other in that particular goal. While Walt could tell that annoyed Kageo, they didn't argue about it either. Walt was an adult and Kageo couldn't keep him out of it if the man himself didn't want to be. Especially after everything his father had done to him.

Once again the families had provided the wardrobe for the students, ostensibly to allow them to focus on exams and graduation prep. Fortunately for Walt, the current fashion had swung back around to something a little more modern, so his outfit consisted of a hunter green three-piece suit with his personal emblem embroidered in white on the breast of the vest and jacket. He had a brilliant white button shirt for under the vest and a bow tie and pocket square that was green and white plaid to match his suit.

Kageo had gone for a three-piece suit himself, but left the jacket off since it was getting warmer now. The pants and button up shirt were black while his tie and vest were a deep jewel toned green. It took him out of his normal colors but he wanted to do something different for the end of the year and Adiran had thought it smart. He added a pair of glasses that were in a black and green color for the frame to match. He rolled up the sleeves of the shirt neatly so some of his tattoos showed.

When Walt saw him fully dressed, he was very glad they were in their room. He immediately stepped close to Kageo and growled provocatively in his ear before kissing him on the neck. Kageo grinned at that and put his arms around Walt's neck, pulling him down into a full kiss that they broke soon after so as to actually make it to the ball.

They met the others out in the courtyard. Yami wore a backless gown of navy blue with sparkles all over it, to match Elliot who was wearing a suit with a blue and gold vest and deep blue tie. It matched the colors of the Cabot crest and Yami even wore his Cabot pin on the breast of her gown.

Stella was in a tea length gown of white lace, with a higher neckline that sat just at her collarbone and small cap-sleeves of chiffon. There were gold suns embroidered on the dress, and she had sun pins all through her golden curls. Her date - the Sullivan boy, though Walt was doing everything in his power to never learn the man's first name - wore black pants, a white button up shirt, and a white vest with gold suns on it as well, to match her.

Walt gave the Sullivan boy the most imperceptible of nods before ignoring him entirely for the rest of the evening. He smiled warmly at his sister and complimented her outfit, then gave Yami and Elliot the same treatment. They all took a bunch of photos together before heading off to the ballroom.

When they got there, they heard someone call out Kageo and Yami's names, and then Rinne came running over to throw her arms around her siblings. She was wearing a red and black Japanese style silk dress with her hair up in a bun. She stopped and looked at the rest of their group, her eyes getting big when she saw Stella.

"Wow! You look like a princess!" Rinne cried.

Walt stood up taller and brushed imaginary lint from the lapel of his jacket. "Why, thank you! I like to think I clean up nice," he responded warmly before winking at Rinne and laughing at his own joke.

Rinne giggled at him and looked between him and Stella. "I guess that makes you the Prince since you're obviously her brother!"

"Actually," Walt said conspiratorially, "she's my sister. I was here first."

This earned him a dirty look from Stella before she responded, "Only by two years, jerk."

Rinne giggled again at that, making it clear that she liked the two of them. She was busy telling the two Whitmore siblings how she wanted to go to the Academy when she was older as well when Adiran and Lilith joined them.

"Careful, she will talk your ear off all night if you give her the chance," Lilith told Walt and Stella, earning a proud grin from Rinne.

Walt tried not to show just how distracted he was by the different heart-cords the Blackwoods exhibited. He knew about them because Kageo had described them, but seeing them in person made him consider how similar it was to what his parents had going on. Kageo was also trying to ignore it, though it was bothering him again. Luckily, Rinne did a good job of keeping his guardians busy.

The two of them were still thinking about that when the Whitmores arrived. Wilhelm and Deirdre showed up on the opposite side as the Blackwoods, with the two families facing each other. This was the first time Kageo had ever seen them right next to each other in the same room, and the tension was thick. Walt felt the tension as well, but Kageo could feel the gray feeling he got along the bond when Walt was working with his powers. He could still feel their bond, barely, but he could no longer see it. Worse, there had been a spike of alarm prior to Walt shutting his emotions down.

Adiran cleared his throat and gave a bow of his head. "Lord and Lady Whitmore."

Everyone paused to acknowledge the most powerful duo in all of Γ†strunia, many of them waiting to see what would happen. Wilhelm coolly acknowledged Adiran with a small return nod while Dierdre stood quietly next to her husband. She was acting the part of a perfect lady of the realm, smiling and keeping silent, though there was a telltale tightness to the muscles around her eyes that let Walt and Stella know that they had been arguing again prior to this event.

Kageo had been looking between Adiran and Wilhelm's faces, as this was the first time they had acknowledged each other in over a decade and he wasn't sure how it was going to go. He let his eyes fall slightly, trying to figure out some way to ease the tensions when he noticed the line between the two families. He turned to look in the direction where Wilhelm's bond was, and let his eyes follow it the rest of the way, right to his own aunt - Lilith.

It felt like the air had been knocked right out of him and he could barely breathe. He took a surprised step back, getting the attention of everyone around him by accident. When he noticed they were looking at him, he coughed, shaking his head slightly before he said, "I need a drink," in a strained voice and turned to go find one.

So many things were going through his mind right then, little things that he had missed that were falling into place now. He felt betrayed, most of all, but on top of that he was terrified. Behind the mask on the bond, Walt was entertaining similar thoughts, especially in light of the recovered memories. Walt didn't dare to follow Kageo right then, as it would have made obvious the connection he had hidden their bond to keep secret. He didn't even know if Wilhelm could see other people's bonds like they could. Kageo had mentioned Adiran said it was rare, but rare didn't mean no one else could.

When Kageo got to the refreshments table, he grabbed a glass of champagne and downed it. Once he put that one down, he grabbed another, this time to nurse slowly, as he tried to figure out what to do. He didn't understand Lilith's part in all of this. She had been left alone with them plenty of times before. So why hadn't she killed any of them before this if she was involved with Wilhelm in any way?

Back at the group, Lilith watched as Kageo went to get his drink but her attention was drawn back to the conversation by Stella, asking her about an obscure custom she recalled reading about that had originated in Vailmont. Adiran was looking at Lilith to answer, so she focused on the question for a bit. Walt completely ignored Kageo leaving, as if they were simply roommates. His hands flashed at his sides, informing Wilhelm that he had attempted to poison Kageo as he had asked but there hadn't seemed to be an effect.

Adiran's eyes glanced at Walt's movements, but turned his attention back to his wife. Over Lilith's shoulder, though, he could see Kageo down the glass of champagne, causing him to frown slightly before he turned back to the conversation and covered it up with a neutral expression. Once Lilith fell silent, Wilhelm waited a respectable pause to ensure she was done talking and addressed the students.

"How do we feel about exams? I know results won't be out until next week, but surely you lot know how you did," he asked the group at large.

Yami knew she had done well on exams, but she wasn't sure how comfortable she felt speaking about it. Luckily, Elliot spoke up, his voice strong and confident as he said, "I'm pretty sure all of us did well. Yami and I were studying a lot together before exams, and I know the others were in the library together most of the last week or two. Of course, our two double majors probably killed it." He gave Walt a smile to show he was talking him up a little but did believe that Walt and Kageo did well.

Walt smiled at that. "I can only speak for myself, but I am pretty sure I passed at the very least. What I'm anxious about is finding out what I need to work on next season," he responded to his father's questioning look.

Kageo rejoined them with his drink as Stella told her father that she was sure she had passed with flying colors. Adiran turned to look at his oldest and said, "I'm not surprised this group has done well this year. You're all very capable and talented young men and women."

"A real testament to their genes and good breeding," Lilith commented, which made Kageo's stomach clench in anger and agony. It felt like a slap to his parents' memory and legacy.

Deirdre coughed politely into her kerchief and excused herself to get a drink from the refreshment table. Wilhelm watched her go and then made his farewells to go join her, allowing some of the tension in the group to lessen. There almost seemed to be a collective sigh of relief when Wilhelm left. Yami had almost tried to go and follow Deirdre, but Wilhelm's following her made it impossible to get her alone.

Rinne started talking to Yami and Stella about fashion again, while Lilith paid attention to them. Adiran took Kageo a couple of steps away. "I know after tomorrow, everyone is heading home for break. Lilith and I will be here to get you and Yami, and we'll be heading to the Capital estate instead of Vailmont."

Kageo looked alarmed at him. "The Capital? Thyllport?"

Adiran almost chuckled. "Is there another Capital I am unaware of?"

Kageo shook his head, clearing his throat. "No, I'm just...why the Capital? We've never gone there in all the time since mom and dad died."

"Well, the Academy is only three years of study," Adiran explained. "After you graduate, you have to start making strides in your career and life. I was never the heir to the Blackwood estates. I am just a stand in until you are ready to take the title of Lord Blackwood. That includes figuring out which estate to live in, and where your aunt and I go. It's time you all saw the Capital estate."

Kageo looked like he wasn't sure about this but he nodded his head in understanding. Adiran clapped him on the shoulder and then went back over to Lilith and Rinne to get them to go and get some of the food to eat. Kageo drank down another half of his drink and then rejoined their group, looking more than a little pale.

Walt gave him a look that begged the obvious question, but wisely kept it to himself until it was just their group again. Just to be safe, he triggered the portable sound isolation crystal he had made as well. "Did you see that?" Walt hissed to Kageo, motioning toward the refreshment table with his eyes.

Kageo nodded his head slowly. "Your dad and my aunt. Do you think that was what your mom was trying to tell mine? That they were together?"

Walt nodded, a disgusted and horrified look on his face. "I'm afraid so," he responded.

Stella, Yami, and the two dates looked lost, so Walt filled them in quickly about the bond line. By the time he was finished both of their sisters were also staring at the group of parents mingling at the refreshment table with horrified expressions.

Yami was the first to speak once everyone had digested that information. "I don't get it. Why are we still safe if Lilith was in league with him this whole time?"

Kageo shook his head. "I have no idea. I was wondering the same thing."

"She likely makes a better spy in your camp than a mercenary," Stella filled in. "Father works that way. Particularly if getting caught killing either of you could be linked back to him in some way, he wouldn't risk her as an operative."

"Uncle Adiran and Lilith are taking us to the Capital estate when we leave here," Kageo told them after he accepted that Stella was probably right about Lilith, earning a shocked expression from his sister.

"He always kept us away from it because it was dangerous," Yami commented.

"Maybe he knows this all has to come to a head eventually," Elliot added. "I mean, with everything we've learned, how could it not? If it's not between the two of you and Whitmore, he'll have his eldest son to deal with soon. I don't imagine you'd be able to go a whole summer in his home with the chance he'll mess with your memory again."

Walt chuckled quietly, his mirth not directed at Elliot, but at his assumption that he'd ever put himself in a position to be manipulated again. "Oh, I've already had the Whitmore summer cottage prepped for the summer. It has a workroom that needs a little tightening of its magical seals but is otherwise suitable for what I intend to practice. Beyond that, though, you're probably right," he responded.

"I should have known better," Elliot admitted.

Kageo was looking at Walt with some pride in his eyes. "That's a smart idea. Where does that summer cottage reside?"

Walt grinned. "It's on the other side of our bathroom door, if you trigger the right gem," he told Kageo with a wink before dropping the spell that protected them from prying ears.

Kageo put that information away for later use if necessary. Right now, they couldn't do anything about the things they had learned. The best they could do now was to finish up with the celebrations and then make decisions about what to do later. The music struck up not long after that. There was a live band

and

a mixologist, and they worked in shifts. The group all danced together and enjoyed drinks, then went back to their rooms later in the night.

When Kageo and Walt were sure everything was quiet for the night, they turned on the sound proofing and took comfort in each other's embrace. Summer break would be a few months and so much was unknown right then. It felt good to just lose themselves in each other on their last night at the Academy for the spring semester. Kageo took the lead by riding Walt until they both climaxed, and then they made love again in the shower with Kageo up against the wall.

"Are you going home to the Capital first?" Kageo asked Walt the next morning as they finished packing.

Walt nodded. "I have to. There's a public gathering in three days, then I can disappear. First to the glade, then to the cottage," he said, handing Kageo a ruby carved with the stylized tree he wore on his breast at the Academy. "This will bring you to me, wherever I am and mine will bring me to you."

Kageo held the gem for a moment, like it was the most precious thing he could own right then, before he slipped it into the leather pouch he almost always kept on his belt. "Just be careful. A lot can happen in three days."

Walt nodded his agreement with that, offering Kageo one last kiss before they headed out of the room and out to the courtyard. They met up with the rest of the group once again and boarded the train for the Capital. It turned out Elliot and the Sullivan boy were also summering there, so they rode together. Of course, since the parents were there, people mostly sat with their families.

Kageo was uneasy as the scenery passed by them. Rinne, Yami, and Lilith were talking as if everything was normal, but Adiran kept glancing at Kageo as if he was trying to figure out what was wrong. Kageo kept glancing up the aisle of the train, his eyes looking for Walt though they were fairly far apart from each other now.

"What makes you so uneasy?" Adiran asked him.

Kageo looked back at him, acutely aware that Yami and Lilith were listening to their conversation too. He cleared his throat to gain some time to think. "I think all of the deep family secrets are getting to me. I see danger everywhere."

"That's perfectly understandable, dear," Lilith told him. "You've been on high alert for so long, and you've likely learned far more since you started school."

Kageo just gave a grunt of acknowledgement, not bothering to expand on whether he had or what he might have learned. Instead, he leaned his head back on his seat, letting his eyes roam down the aisle of the train. His heart was searching for Walt, wanting just a glance of him, or just to feel that he was okay, though he knew he wouldn't get it right then. Every time Walt faded out their connection to hide it from Wilhelm, it felt a little like having lost something crucially important. Like a limb being lopped off, only no one else could see it.

Walt was also wistfully watching the aisles for a glimpse of any of his friends, not daring to hope for Kageo to come striding up to him. He knew he wouldn't be able to hide the telltale signs of love between them forever, but Walt didn't want Wilhelm to know any sooner than he had to that his son was romantically entwined with the child of his sworn enemy. Walt had considered, for a brief daydream, the possibility of helping his father see reason and go back to the man he had been before the suspicion of others and power-mongering had begun. Walt's brilliant mind had walked through every conceivable possibility for how Wilhelm would react and none of them ended well.

Wilhelm broke through his rumination with a question. "I've seen that look before," Lord Whitmore said jovially, "Who is the lucky lady?"

Walt startled a bit as he refocused himself on the present. "Oh, I'm quite sure it's just an infatuation," Walt stated dismissively as he tried to redirect the conversation. "So I'm a third of the way through my course of study. Don't you think it's past time to learn governance as well?"

Wilhelm appeared impressed by his son's heretofore undisclosed ambition. "Well, since you mention it, yes. I thought I would have to drag you kicking and screaming into the council chamber, but I'm certainly pleasantly surprised that you've come to accept that you are likely to be my successor," the First Councilman said with a grin.

Back with the Blackwoods, Lilith had been watching her nephew, and finally said to him, "You have the sort of longing in your eyes that I've only seen in those who are in love. You didn't want to introduce her to us?"
