I'd spent most of the week planning and researching in readiness for the next stage of the mission. I'd been in almost constant contact with Lexa as we tried to piece it all together.
The information that Simon had given me in his office had turned out to be gold. Lexa had looked into The Hamilton Company and had found out that it was owned by an entrepreneur named Charles Hamilton. At first, I didn't see the significance until Lexa told me that Charles Hamilton was on the list of Generals which Ethan had been given by MI5 on my previous mission. His name was also on Tristan's list which gave us a double confirmation that this guy was a member of the secret organisation.
"Do you think he's the one orchestrating the terror attack?" I asked Lexa over the phone.
"It's a distinct possibility," she replied. "We've looked into his business and discovered that his company is actually a holding company."
"What does that mean?"
"It means that he has a controlling share in many smaller companies which come under the Hamilton Group. He is a very powerful man by all accounts."
"Do we know what these smaller companies do?"
"A lot of them are within the EU or closely linked to the EU. It would make sense that this guy isn't happy about Brexit. He could be killing two birds with one stone by utilising Shaw. On the one hand, if he orders, or is funding the attack, it might spark the UK to ask for help for the EU. Our government would have to go begging for assistance which may result in them insisting that we rejoin," she explained. "On the other hand, he has sold a lot of shares in UK businesses which will almost certainly crash if there's a terror attack in the UK."
"So, he could be the one advising people to sell because he knows it's going to happen."
"Exactly. There's no evidence of his involvement, but he's a very shrewd man. He'd make sure that he couldn't be pinned to the attack or any of the stock market speculation."
"So, it might be him or it might not," I pointed out. "Where do we go from here?"
"We stick to the plan. Maybe Ryan can tell you a little more about where and how he gets the weapons in. I'm also hoping that this Nathan character from the party, might know something about the stock market source. Our intel team are working on the new data and hacking their systems, but there's a lot of it to sift through."
"Well, it looks like I'm going to be opening my holes once again," I laughed.
"I'm sure you won't have a problem with that, she giggled. "Did you get the gift I sent to you?"
I thought back to the previous day when there'd been a knock at my door. I'd answered it and found that it was an Amazon delivery for Rebecca Sloan. I knew it wasn't from Amazon as I hadn't ordered anything from them. The Facility often used fake couriers to deliver tactical equipment to agents in the field. No one ever gave an Amazon driver a second glance, they were so common.
"Yes, I got the gift," I giggled. "I thought it was a fucking dildo when I first opened it."
"I don't think you want to be putting that in your vagina," she laughed.
Her gift was about six-inches long and made of a composite material. It looked like a long black cigar with a hole through the middle.
"What made you change your mind about me being armed?" I asked.
"This is getting very dangerous. You've already had to improvise and it was lucky that you got hold of an MP7 last week at the bus depot. I know you have the Makarov, but it's too noisy and needs quietening down a little."
"Is that why you've sent me a suppressor for it?"
"Yes. It's short enough to keep the weapon small and agile and if you need to shoot someone with it, it won't make a lot of noise. That suppressor has been specially developed by the Russian Spetznaz; it was hard to come by so look after it."
"Thank you, but you do know I have a suppressed MP7 sitting at the back of my wardrobe, don't you?" I laughed.
"Of course, but it's too big to carry to a party," she pointed out.
I had only told Lexa that I had one MP7, despite having acquired two of them from Brian's car. I was going to keep the second weapon and the ammunition for my own personal security after this was over. Tony had always told me to have a plan B in case this all went horribly wrong. He'd already told me he didn't trust Ethan or the Facility. I told him he was wrong, but it never hurt to be prepared.
"How are we doing with the numbers for the bomb locations?" I asked, changing the subject.
"We're still looking. They don't appear to be airports or financial districts so if they're looking to crash the stock market, it has to be something else."
"Maybe we should pay this Hamilton guy a visit and ask him," I joked.
"You'd have to find him first. He's apparently more difficult to get a hold of than Tristan. All of The Generals hide in the shadows and influence big decisions. I'm pretty sure Prime Minister Wilson is doing their bidding too, but so far we're drawing a blank."
"You think this goes all the way to the top of government?" I gasped.
"It's hard to tell if he's involved. The Generals wanted him in power for a reason. They must be calling in favours left, right and centre. They didn't do it for free."
The sheer size of this was way too big for me to fathom. I always knew I was a small cog in a big machine and it was probably best if I just concentrated on my own mission, rather than the bigger picture. Lexa's reply did lead me to ask a poignant question though.
"Are you saying that we might be fighting against our own government?" I quizzed.
"Maybe."
"Doesn't that make us terrorists?"
She didn't reply for a couple of seconds. She must have been shocked by my question.
"We're the good guys, Becca. Don't ever question that."
"Is that a yes or a no?"
"One person's terrorist is another person's freedom-fighter," she said sternly. "We do what's right."
"I guess so. How does Ethan feel about it all?"
"He wants The Generals brought to justice and closed down. The government should be free to serve the people, not the elite privileged few. Why do you ask?"
"It's just something Tony said to me. He says he doesn't trust him."
"They don't get along. They had a couple of disagreements on previous missions before you ever joined us. They just don't like each other."
"Why not? What happened?"
"It's a long story and it's not relevant," she shut me down. "Haven't you got a party to go to?"
"Of course. I'm just waiting for Janice to come and pick me up," I replied.
"Is she the older lady who hates lesbians?" she asked.
"That's her alright. I'm actually looking forward to seeing her perform. She was pretty impressive in Simon's office on Monday."
"I'm sure she was. Just because she's older, doesn't mean she's past it, Becca," she exclaimed. "None of us are getting any younger you know."
"Awwww don't worry, Lexa. I'll still love you when you've got a dried-up old pussy and saggy tits," I laughed.
