Best. Birthday. Ever.
As soon as I came in the door after another night at Craig's, Beth, my best friend and apartment mate was waiting for me.
"Becky, we have to talk."
Silently, I thought, "Okayyy, what's this all about?" Then I smiled and said, "Oooh, sounds serious. If we were dating, I'd think you were about to break up with me."
Beth didn't crack a smile. Apparently, this was serious.
"Sorry", I said. "Is something wrong?"
"Can we sit down?"
Now I was starting to get concerned. Was she feeling sick? Had somebody died? "Umm, sure."
We walked over to the couch in the living room, and even before we sat down, I asked again, "What's wrong? Are you okay? You didn't lose your sense of smell or anything like that, did you?"
"No, no, no! I'm not sick. I'm going out of my mind with loneliness!
Shit. I was afraid of this.
She continued, "You know I love you like a sister, and I'll be forever grateful for you taking me in when the theater and all the restaurants that I work at closed last year. So, I was really happy for you when you met Craig, and were spending a couple of days a week over there hanging out. But since the two of you got together as a couple a few weeks ago, you've been spending morning, noon and night over there. If you're not at work or coming home for a change of clothes or to do laundry, you're gone all the time. You know I've been going stir-crazy this whole year. The only time I leave the apartment is to exercise or shop for food and other essentials. Aside from you, I've literally had no meaningful human contact for months. And now I'm alone all the time!"
I could see tears starting to well up in her eyes as she vented her frustration.
"Jesus, Beth! Why didn't you say something before! I could tell you've been in a bad mood, but when I asked you what was wrong, you always said 'nothing'. How could you not tell me how you were feeling? Especially if I was the one making you unhappy!"
She shut her eyes tight to keep from crying and looked down as she said, "I don't know. I mean, I owe you my life, and you're my best friend, and you were so happy! I didn't want to get in the way of that. But I can't keep this to myself anymore!"
"Oh, my Lord, Beth, if you tell me I saved your life one more time I'm going to throttle you!" I put my hands on both of her cheeks and continued, "I need to look me in the eye and listen with both ears. Do I have your attention?"
She nodded.
"I'm going to say this again once, and then I seriously never want you to bring it up again! What was I supposed to do when all your housemates from the theater went home to their parents? I knew you didn't have that option since yours kicked you out when you came out of the closet! Was I supposed to leave you out on the street when I have a spare bedroom? You don't owe me your life if I couldn't have lived with myself by not inviting you here. Besides, you've made things so much nicer in this apartment by taking care of all the chores around here for me. Even if you owed me any kind of a debt at all, you'd have paid it off months ago! I still have the family I was born into, but you are the family I choose. We are absolutely sisters as far as I'm concerned, and if I'm making you unhappy, I do NOT want you to keep it inside!"
"Fine, fine. So, I'm telling you now. I need more of your time. But I still don't want to get in the way of you and Craig being happy. I don't know what to do!"
"First of all, you need to come here so I can give you a big hug!"
We wrapped our arms around each other, at which point Beth let loose and cried for a couple minutes. I just let her while I stroked her back through her thick, wavy red hair. While we were sitting there quietly as she let it out, I had an idea.
"Why don't you come over to Craig's with me tomorrow after church? We don't do much -- just the same board games and TV watching we've always done, but I'm sure you'd be welcome."
"Are you sure, really? He's pretty strict about maintaining his social distance and the integrity of his bubble. There's a reason I've never been over there before."
"You leave my boyfriend to me. If I can get him to agree, would you want to join us?"
"Omigosh yes! That would be amazing!"
I got out my phone and called Craig.
He picked up and said, "Hey hon, what's up? Is everything okay? I figured you'd be in bed by now."
"Everything's fine. I've got a favor to ask. Can Beth join us tomorrow for cards and TV?"
"Umm, you know I'm not comfortable being around other people, especially inside! Do you remember how long it took for me to invite you over last summer? The only reason I did was that you have all that great personal protective equipment at work and that you get tested all the time."
"Yeah, I know, but if you think about it, the three of us are already in a bubble together. I share airspace with both of you all the time. If either you or she ever got sick, I'd almost for sure get it too, and then pass it to the other. And that seems really unlikely at this point. We've all been at this for months and nothing's happened. Clearly we all have good habits."
"Hmm. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Sure, bring her along! I've wanted to meet her for a long time. I still haven't thanked her properly for suggesting Morgan to you."
"You're the best, my love! We'll come by tomorrow for lunch."
