Note to Readers:
This nine-part story follows a young, straight, American couple from serious dating to marriage and parenthood, and from exclusive sex to separate side action, swinging, and group sex. All characters are at least 18 years old. The sex includes interracial and lesbian. The previous four parts are recapped to some extent, but if you read those parts first, you'll follow along better and also read a lot more sex. July 2013:
On Independence Day, Sam and Kendra joined the crowd at Dan and Kelly's cookout. Now a month into their own home ownership, Kendra and Sam peppered their hosts with questions about heat pumps and leaf-proof gutters and garage floor cleanup. This distracted them as they waited for their first meeting with Joan's boyfriend, which Kendra had put off for fear of making her best friend worry that he might get hot for Kendra.
Also distracting them, but not helpfully, was their hosts' one-year-old, Brian, who toddled through the house and yard that were much larger than Sam and Kendra's.
As they watched Dan play with his son, Kendra held Sam's arm and quietly said, "You know I want this. Is it okay that I'm really anxious, and don't think I'm ready?"
"Of course," he said.
"Thanks. I hope your vote can influence my biological clock."
"You're twenty-six."
"If that was supposed to calm me down, it didn't work."
Kelly's parents were there to help look after Brian, so Kelly had some free time to show off her achievement of a halter-and-shorts body. Hearing her former bridesmaid chat about how Brian had weaned himself made Kendra grateful to see Joan arrive, and bring the more immediate anxiety to the foreground.
Kendra was subdued as she and Joan hugged. When Joan introduced Stu, Kendra wasn't even close to bubbly, which she had been when learning that Joan and Stu had become a couple.
"So nice to meet you at last," said Kendra, calmed by photo exchanges that prepared her for Stu's ranginess, and his sandy hair, and the thick, wide mustache that was absolutely right for him.
"Same here," he said, with a low drawl. Kendra almost froze, wanting to get very, very close.
"Sam, right?" said Stu, shifting off of Kendra. "I'll want to pick your brains about getting a hybrid or an all-electric, but I ought to let you have a day off."
"No problem," said Sam with a chortle. "I like to flaunt what I claim to know."
"Well, Joan should introduce you to everyone else," said Kendra, almost brusquely. "See you soon." She then pulled Sam away to nowhere in particular.
"He didn't stare at your boobs," Sam murmured.
"Because the top I'm wearing might as well be a flour sack," Kendra returned. "God, I don't want Joan to hate me!"
Kendra kept avoiding Joan and Stu. She was in the kitchen prepping the seven-layer dip she had brought along, when Joan, alone, approached her.
"What's with you?" Joan asked. "A world-class case of PMS?"
"I'm trying to keep the field clear for you," said Kendra with a worried look. "If I'm friendly, he might take it as flirting."
"With you, there's no difference. And as for a clear field, have you seen Diane and Rita? They practically jumped him."
Kendra looked closely at her best friend. "And you're...okay with it," was Kendra's analysis. "Oh Joanie, can you really be...confident about this?"
Joan let a smile show. "Yeah. We've really gotten to know each other."
Kendra hugged her. "I'm so glad I left you alone!"
Joan patted her back but then separated. "I think that helped a lot. But now, please be you. We want you and Sam in our lives."
"Of course!" Kendra returned, then slipped in a reference to one of Joan and Stu's shared interests. "And I'll have no trouble at all keeping my hands off that classical sculpture."
Joan glanced around, and guided Kendra to a hall off the kitchen. Her lips barely moved as she said, "That may not be necessary."
Kendra blinked. "What may not?"
Joan took a breath. "Remember the bachelorette party?"
Kendra put a finger on her cheek in mock-uncertainty. "Uh, maybe...was that the wildest moment of my life? Yeah, think so. Plus, Sam and I watch the video now and then." Lately they had spent more time watching their wedding night and honeymoon vids.
"The wildest moment of my life, too," Joan said, still quietly. "Not just having sex, but with other people there. And you. We'd shared so much before, but then we shared total physical abandon." She stopped, looked away.
Kendra murmured, "You can keep going. It's me."
Joan looked back, half-smiling. "Don't worry, this isn't a gay thing. When I get myself off, it's from thinking about men. Anyway, what I learned at your party is that I'm okay with sex that isn't private and one-on-one. Uh, not just okay." After a pause: "If this is too much, stop me."
"Oh no, Honey," said Kendra, easing them further down the empty hall, barely able to contain herself. "You saw how I felt about it. And Sam's party was like that. We got to thinking that we, um, have the same opinion you do." Then, in a whisper: "And we've done something about it."
Joan jolted, red curls sent swaying. "Are you saying...you've explored, uh, that scene?"
"Yes. But let's put that part on hold." Now Kendra needed a breath, and then another. "You're thinking, you and Stu and me and Sam?"
"It's a fantasy, I'll be perfectly happy ifβ"
"You can't un-say this. Does the fantasy involve you getting planked by my husband?"
"Our friendship, you and me, is way more important than some silly, irresponsibleβ"
