By early May, 1983, I had figured out a great living situation for our last year at college. I'd be rooming with my girlfriend, her best friend, and her bestie's boyfriend. Two weeks later it was all in the crapper. Long story short, I was single, with a lease expiring in 2 weeks, and two summer jobs that were going to keep me in town.
I figured something would come up so I could spend some time finding a good place to live. I had no problem couch surfing for a month. I was explaining this to Kyle, and he was half-listening while getting ready for a Friday night behind the bar at The Broken Record. I knew he couldn't help, but he might know somebody who could.
As the place started to fill up, I picked up my beer and headed to a small table before they were all gone. As I was sitting down, I heard a familiar voice.
"Scott Watson? Is that you?" Katie asked over the din. She saw the table and asked, "Are you waiting for somebody?" I shook my head. "Can we join you?"
"Of course," I shrugged as three pretty college seniors pulled out bar stools and sat at the table. Katie was in the same sorority as Cindy, my last girlfriend, but they weren't close. I got to know Katie in a social psych class, and she'd introduced me to her roommates, Lisa and Julie, when we collaborated on a project.
"Where's Cindy?" Katie asked.
"She decided we should see other people."
"What the...?" Katie scooted closer and put her hand on my shoulder. She was wearing a short blue dress that showed off her taut breasts, narrow waist, and long legs. Her blonde hair brushed my face as she hugged me. "When?"
"About a week ago," I replied, enjoying the hug probably more than I should have.
"Well we need to celebrate your singularity," announced Lisa, as she moved closer on my other side. She was wearing a green crop top that really called attention to her breasts, while the little white tennis skirt made her legs look very tanned.
"Definitely!" Julie, their friend, agreed. "Let's take him to Old Town tomorrow!" She bounced up and down, reminding us all that she was a very well-endowed cheerleader, but tonight without a bra. The three giggled and agreed.
"Are you still over at Pine Ridge?" Katie asked, leaning in close.
"That's right across the street from us!" Julie practically shouted.
"Just for the next two weeks," I replied.
"Then where?" Lisa asked.
"No idea," I replied. "Turns out my plans for next year centered around people who didn't want to include me."
"I bet that's where Gina went," said Julie looking around the table. The other two women leaned back and nodded. I looked at the three women while they all nodded.
"Care to clue me in?" I finally asked.
"Gina bailed on us last week," Katie replied. "She said had a better deal."
"She never wanted to do anything anyway," Julie added, rolling her big brown eyes. "Including cleaning."
I continued to nurse my beer as they tossed back a couple more drinks. Eventually, I emptied my beer, excused myself, and went to the restroom.
When I returned, Katie dragged me out onto the tiny dance floor. Julie and Lisa joined us and we all danced together. The women shimmied around me, which made me smile. The song changed to a slow number and Katie threw her arms around my neck seductively.
"When this is done, can you take us home?" she whispered in my ear. I looked at the three tipsy, bordering on drunk, women, smiled, and nodded. Katie rested her head against my shoulder. "I'm glad you're here tonight," she said as she traced her fingers along my neck.
