Chapter 10 -- The Other Woman

"Yum. You taste good. What'd you just eat, something with peppermint?"

"A life saver. I wanted to be kissing sweet for you," Karen crooned as she sat in Dave's lap.

"This is an unexpected visit."

"I have a challenge for you ... maybe even kind of like some of the challenges Dori gave you years ago to get you to loosen up."

"What?" Dave smiled as his sister-in-law from Ohio. She must have just arrived.

Karen turned in his lap and held out her hand. A pretty younger woman came into view. Karen said, "Dave, meet Candy Hotchkiss. Candy, this is Dave, the man I love that I've been telling you about."

Dave went on alert and poured on the charm. "Candy, so nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you."

Candy kind of frowned, "That I was the other woman and was stealing Karen's husband. I'm sorry for all that."

Dave said, "I'm sure you are. I was more recently referring to your pleasing integration into the Simon family up in Ohio, and Karen's reports about how nice you are."

Candy looked surprised and looked at Karen somewhat adoringly. "Thank you," she said.

Karen stood and hugged her friend. "Candy is still having an identity and self-worth crisis. That's why I brought her here to the Circle. My challenge to you is to turn her around, and I think you and I know exactly how you can do that."

Dave chuckled, "Something about the A-spot?" Only the way he said it, it sounded more like 'a spot'.

Karen smiled and nodded.

"Does Alice and Julie know you're here?"

This was spur of the moment. I hope it's all right and doesn't interfere with anybody's plans. Candy and I were talking at lunch and then we called and got airline tickets, and here we are. The kids are with Daryl."

Dave teased, "He's not going to act up?"

Karen laughed, "If he does he'll fuck up the situation with his two wives, and then won't be getting any, anyhow, anyway, or anytime soon. He promised he'd be a good boy."

"How're your parents?"

"Good, and we had a close call. They dropped by during dinner one night to drop something off. We just happened to be entertaining our good friend Candy. Fortunately, they didn't go upstairs, and the kids kept their yaps shut."

"What're you staking out for your room? The guest room is available for Candy if you want to sleep with us."

"Oh, yes. Maybe we'll both sleep with you if a wife or two chooses other quarters."

Candy was watching the conversation like a tennis match. She said, "You talk about sleeping with Dave as if it's no big deal."

Karen smiled and hugged her friend. "Because it's not. I love him and he loves me. We mended a fence that stood between us about six months ago. I assume you mean by 'sleeping' that I intend to have sex with him; well, I do and I know he will make love to me in a way that is beautiful and touching and that will stir my heart the way nobody else can. You should try it."

Candy kind of harrumphed and continued to look worried.

Karen said, "Let me get our bags situated and we'll be back for cocktail time. I want to give Candy a tour, too."

Dave chuckled, "Mike and Kat are filming in his living room if you were thinking of going over that way."

"Oh, thanks for the info. I'll think about that." Karen winked at Dave so that Candy didn't see the devilish look in her eyes.

Candy was trying to follow along with occasional 'Huh?" statements.

As the two pretty women went off, Dave watched the pair. Karen was an older blonde with a spring in her step he'd not noticed before. He took that to indicate her joy and happiness with the world. She was buxom and had a firm butt, the result of several thousand hours in her local gym keeping things toned up.

Karen and Candy sat at the bar. Karen flirted with the two younger men. She'd been with several of them and held fond memories of the night she left her shell and started to fly.

Candy sat with big eyes, talked when spoken to, but seemed a little on the reserved side. Dave's assessment was that she'd gotten the full education about Circle from Karen that afternoon, and she was in a state of shock or was awed beyond belief. He thought she was on autopilot. He also wondered what made her the femme fatale that attracted Daryl; she just didn't seem to have the spark and temperament to be the 'other' woman.

Dave sat with Alice, Julie, Karen, and Candy at dinner, along with several others from the Circle. Candy gradually opened up, and Dave got her talking about her own family and her job. Karen also prompted her to talk about the unique threesome that Candy had joined with Daryl, their three kids, and Karen. Candy called it 'instant family' and laughed sardonically.

Dave guessed that Candy was a short-timer in the threesome relationship. Heather sat with them. She declared, "I thought I was strung out when I was going to school, and before that when I had to work at the club to stay alive. This new job is running me ragged, but it is so gratifying to be contributing the way I am."

Somewhere in the following discussion Heather asked, "When are Cricket, Ashley, and Scarlett coming back? I missed all of them so much."

Dave pulled his cellphone out of his pocket and typed out a text to Cricket and Ashley.

'Are the three of you ever coming back to the Circle? We all love you and miss you like crazy, me especially. Dave.'

In seconds, his phone buzzed with a reply.

'We three miss everyone too. Some or all of us will be there next weekend. Ash and I can stay through Halloween. I don't know Scarlett's schedule. Love. Love. Love. Cricket, Ashley, and Scarlett.'

Dave texted back,

'Rose is always welcome and loved, too. I forgot to mention her. Sorry.'

Dave had been reading the texts out loud so his wives knew what was happening. Alice said, "Good. I want to see how they've changed. If things are still good, I would like to do something to formally annex Cricket into our family."

Heather nodded, "I agree. We love her that much. I want her as a sister-wife."

Alice said, "Yes, and I know you do, too. She has truly distinguished herself in our family, and I feel such love from her on so many levels. She's also probably the most spiritually-inclined person in the Circle."

Dave chuckled, "She's not even a member. For that matter, Scarlett isn't either."

"And you love both of them, and Ashley, too?"

"Very much."

"Then you should fix that at Monday night's general meeting. Everybody knows Cricket and Scarlett well. They fit in here, and embraced our lifestyle and the tenets of our philosophy without any reservations."

Monday night's meeting not only had a list of Circle candidates to vote on; it also had the decision on whether and how to allow further development of the land the Circle owned. The latter was controversial, but in accord with the by-laws of the Circle Cohousing Project, Inc. a two-thirds vote was needed to approve any changes to land use.

Jack stood and addressed the group. "As many of you know, we have had several requests to build full scale homes on Circle land. Informally, in talking to you there was consensus that such building not occur on the other side of Circle Drive nor across the road from either the Townhouse 1 or Townhouse 2 projects.

"Various board members and interested parties have met to see what we could come up with as a solution to the wishes of some and the hopes of many. Accordingly, we would like to direct your attention to this chart -- an aerial view of our land. Let me orient you. The airport is here and you can easily see the runway. Circle Drive surrounding this core and the homes around it is here, with the access road.

"The optimum proposal we derived is to add a new road coming off the access road, just inside our gate. That road would run towards the east, almost parallel to the runway on the other side of the complex. The white lots marked on this chart would be defined building lots, each about one-hundred-forty by three-hundred feet rectangular. This would allow for a large house, pool or back yard, and yet enable the occupants to access the core with golf carts or by just a short walk across the field. There'd even be room for homes on both sides of the new road.

"We would limit the height of any homes there to thirty feet. The green curve on this chart shows the approximate contour of the sightline for a structure that height from any first floor home on Circle Drive, thus they would not see any of the proposed structures. Second floor windows would just be able to see the roofs of the proposed home at that height. Given the distance, we do not believe the profiles to be objectionable. This inset shows what you might see from Dave's home, and he is the nearest to any new homes there. With landscaping on the intervening land the roofs could be made to disappear completely.

"The lots and homes on them would be financed and owned as are all the homes and townhouses. The ultimate impact on the Circle treasury would be nil, except for the quarterly dues that they would pay. The Circle would bear the costs for the road and utility deployments, but the payback is about two years."

Shelby said, "I must have missed it, but who wants to build?"

Jack said, "Derek Wilson with Emily -- maybe Abby; Paul and Megan Steckler, with space for Ashley; and Bjorn, Nathan, and Tan. That'd be three homes, one next to the other. They are anxious and each would like to start immediately. Dev believes he can arrange for three separate, reputable, and good general contractors to build the homes. I would be the architect pending approval by the Circle board and the potential homeowners. As you can see there's plenty of room for addition homes in this manner before we get to our property boundary."

Based on a question, Julie addressed the financial impact on the Circle treasury and sustainability in more detail. The Circle general fund would expense the road and pre-construction lot development, with a portion being absorbed by the long-term lease of each of the lots. Quarterly dues would rise for the new properties once the certificates of occupancy had been issued, the amount of the rise dependent on their current level of participation and number of members. Children under fifteen would not be 'taxed'. The homes would be taxed on square footage of living space just the way the city does. They'd also have to pay city property taxes as we all do.

Patti turned to Dave, "Will Scarlett want to build something here, or obtain space as her own?"

Dave shrugged. "I honestly don't know. I only know from some short texts and emails that she still loves our way of life and all of us. She will be here in a week or two, so we could ask her. Cricket and Ashley will be with her."

The vote wasn't quite unanimous, but it passed with about ninety percent voting to approve the building projects and the requisite funding considerations.

The next item of business was the induction of new members. Thus, without them knowing about it, Cricket and Scarlett Johansson were inducted into the Circle membership. Lisa Taggart was also confirmed as full member, along with Cindy, Sharon, Jim, Phil, Ron, Jake, and Murph. It was the largest induction of new members since the Circle had started. There were cheers all around. Wendy as the Secretary for the Circle was tasked to let everyone know, but Dave asked that everybody wait until Cricket and Scarlett were actually here to bestow their memberships on them.

Holly asked during the discussions whether Karen and possibly Candy would ever want to become members?

Alice took up the response. "My sister is definitely interested, but she is in the middle of an unusual marital situation that needs to play out a little longer to see how her husband will deal with the radical changes she's made."

Grace asked, "Radical changes?"

Alice said, "Yes. First, the woman he was having an affair with -- Candy -- not only got outed, but also coopted into the family as his second wife. Second, his wife, my sister Karen, is enjoying far too much an intense sexual and loving relationship with her that is exceptionally visible to her husband who was raised as a pretty straight arrow. Third, last week Dave gave Candy the Big One, so the bar for sexual fulfillment has been seriously raised and Candy is madly in love with Dave. Fourth, Daryl knows that Karen has about sixty men and women she enjoys sex with here in the Circle, and he can't complain or even discuss the situation because of how he initially took up with Candy.

"Some time needs to pass while their threesome gets some mileage on it, and also to see how Candy can weather the icy stares and cold shoulders from Karen's oldest daughter -- seventeen year old Bridget. Dave prompted her, "What about your parents?" Everybody in the Circle knew about how Alice's parents had blown up at her and Julie, and then shunned them ever since.

Alice shook her head. "They're wild cards. Sooner or later, they will catch Karen, Daryl, and Candy in some kind of compromising situation, or else Bridget will spill the beans on them just to piss off everybody. In either case, the nuclear fallout will probably spread all the way to Florida. I can't imagine what it'll even be like when it happens, and it will happen. I assured Karen and Candy of that last weekend. I also told them they had a home here."
