Friday
Sometime in the middle of the night I awoke needing to go piss badly. It took me a bit to get my bearings and realize that I heard rain through the open sliding door of our vacation rental bedroom balcony door. Hearing the rainwater was probably what made me wake up from the feeling of the need to go to the bathroom. I groggily rose to my feet and my head was pounding from the mixing of tequila and beer the night before. I hadn't got drunk, but I wasn't sober either. The pounding head problem, however, was most likely the result of changing up the liquor of choice mid-evening.
I went to close the door first and leaned outside to see if our neighbors' door was open or closed. Thankfully it was closed because I really didn't feel up to going next door and closing it for them to keep the rain out. Luckily there was very little wind, so the rain was coming straight down and had not come in the open door. I closed it, shut the blinds, and turned to head to the bathroom. As I entered it, Sara was coming out with two ibuprofens and a glass of water. I must have disturbed her when I got out of bed, checked out the rain, and shut the door. She had snuck into the bathroom and took care of business before me.
Obviously, her head must have been pounding like mine since she had met me with the supplies we hoped would provide us some relief. I took the pills, downed the water, relieved myself, and returned to bed, snuggling up to Sara, spooning her and wrapping my arm around her soft warm breasts. We swiftly fell back asleep skin to skin as neither of us bothered donning any sleepwear.
My phone read nearly eleven when I woke again. It was still raining lightly and because of the cloud cover, the room was only dimly lit. The peacefulness of the rain was keeping the ache of my head down to a manageable thumping. I looked at my beautiful Sara and kissed her gently on the forehead as I wondered how I was so lucky to have her as my best half.
The kiss was enough to wake her from her slumber and she slowly pealed her eyelids open, but just partially. "Sorry I bothered and woke you," I said as softly as I could.
"It's okay. I have been dozing off and on for a while now. I've been trying to work up the courage to open my eyes more than a tiny slit."
"Feeling bad?"
"Better than I did whenever we were up in the middle of the night, but that's not saying much. You?"
"I think better, but I will let you know for sure later. Really just want to brush my teeth, take some pain killers, and get some coffee."
"That sounds like just what the doctor ordered. If I can just get up."
We laid there another minute or two and then both rolled out of bed and crept slowly over to the bathroom to take care of ourselves. We jumped into the shower to see if that would help. No funny business this time in the shower, just a quick clean. The shower did not help our recoveries much and we were both ready to sit down and rest already. We just threw on some comfortable clothes that we had laying around. They had already been worn but were clean enough for now. We really didn't want to bother getting out new outfits before heading down the stairs, this was easier.
All was quiet beside the steady light rain as we reached the main floor landing. We saw no light coming from the laundry room passageway, but as we approached it, we could smell the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and we simply followed our noses into RJ and Jaime's kitchen.
They were lounging on their couch. When they saw us enter their place, they simply gave us a wave, which we returned as we went for cups and the pot of caffeine that we both craved. They looked to be in similar shape to us as they sat snuggling while sipping their cups of java in the unlit room. The sliding door was open just a crack to let in the fresh rain smell, but all the shades were closed keeping what little light of day there was at bay. We plopped down on the loveseat and mirrored them, my arm around Sara as she nestled up to my chest. We all sat in silence, sipping from the hot mugs with our eyes only partly open, staring into the space ahead of us.
After about twenty minutes, Jaime got up gingerly and retrieved the pot of coffee, refilling everyone's cups before grumbling, "It will be a long time before I will drink a margarita again."
"Me too, and I will never follow it up with beer," Sara muttered. We all gave a small, gentle nod in agreement.
We settled back and returned to drinking our caffeine in silence. As my cup approached empty my stomach rumbled loudly. Sara chuckled quietly, "Well it sounds like someone's stomach is feeling better and getting hungry."
"I don't know how much better it is, but I think I am ready to give some food a try. We should try to get rid of our leftovers since we have to check out tomorrow." Everyone else was in agreement and we all got up. Sara and I went and retrieved a bunch of the leftovers from our fridge and brought them back over to put out with the ones that RJ and Jaime got out theirs. Then each of us started to put together our own plates of various food that we thought we might be able to eat without upsetting our delicate stomachs.
As we slowly tested the waters and began to eat, the conversation picked up gradually. The food definitely hit the spot and helped revive everyone a little more. It was early afternoon when we finished cleaning up from our brunch. It was still raining off and on, so it looked to be an indoor day at the beach house. We decided it would be a good time to check in with the kids, then start to pack things up and do laundry. Each couple went about their business of contacting their kids, packing, and cleaning.
Later in the afternoon, we went down to begin the laundry. Sara said, "I will do dark clothes first so give me the shorts and shirt you are wearing."
