Mr. and Mrs. Chang’s anniversary was coming up. Simon knew it was an important one. Michelle and Steven Chang has been married for 25 years now, and his sister Mary was planning the whole celebration for their parents. Simon wanted very much to be a part of the planning, but Mary insisted she had it all covered.
Simon was in the 5th year of college, about to graduate with an engineering degree. Mary was in her second year of community college, living at home, about to transfer to a 4 year college and move out.
The anniversary was coming up in 2 weeks, and Simon tried once more try and help out. He called Mary, but went straight to voicemail.
“Hey Mary, Simon. Was just checking if you really didn’t need any help with mom and dad’s anniversary. Just want to help out. Call me back”
About 2 minutes later Simon got a text from Mary.
Mary: Sorry, a bit busy right now. Don’t worry about it, I got it covered.
Simon: I just want to be a part of it. I know 25 years anniversary is an important one.
Mary: TBH brother, You’ve been gone for a while. I know what mom and dad more than you ever will lol ;)
Simon: Wait. What does that mean?
Mary: Like I said, don’t worry about it. I will call you later with the details.
Simon: Fine. Call me.
The days went by with no word. It was a few days before their anniversary until Mary finally texted him.
Mary: Don’t forget. Friday at our place :)
Simon: Is there really nothing I can do?
Mary: Just show up brother. I got everything set up :)
Simon: Fine! What time?
Mary: Around 6:00 on Friday
Friday came around and Simon’s two hour flight back home made it in around 6:00. Simon texted his sister as soon as he landed. “Sorry I am gonna be a little late. Be there around 7:00”
No reply back from Mary. Simon picked up an Uber to make his way to his parent’s place. It was about a 45 minute drive. After no text back from Mary, during the drive, he decided to call Mary only to get forwarded to voicemail several times. Then he tried his mom and same thing, straight to voicemail. Then he tried his dad and after a couple rings he picked up.
“Hello,” Steven Chang answered. Simon could hear some music in the background. They obviously started the party without him.
“Hey dad, Happy anniversary! sorry. I am gonna be a bit late. Be there in about 30 minutes.” Simon replied.
“Don’t worry about it Simon, nothing to worry about. See you soon!”
“I tried Mary and even mom but got sent straight to voicemail? Sounds like the party already started.”
“Yeah they are a bit.... Occupied at the moment. They are entertaining the guests right now”
“I understand. Must be quite busy. Okay see you soon.”
“Okay, Bye,” Simon’s dad said hanging up immediately before Simon got his “Bye” in.
Finally Simon arrived at the house, short of 7:00. The streets were packed with cars and he could hear the music from outside. He opened the door and walked in. He first saw a few guys near the door, each extended their hands and introducing themselves. They were dressed in nice clothes but their shirts were un-tucked and their ties loose off their neck. Nothing too odd, he thought, it must have just been a casual get together of mom and dad’s friends, he just felt overdressed in fitted Tuxedo.
He continued inside the house and something was becoming even more clear to him. There was a lot of men here, and white men at that. No cousins, uncles, or aunts in sight, and all dressed so casually.
Finally Simon came across his dad.
“Hey Simon!” his dad yelled enthused, “Finally you made it!”
“Of course! I wouldn’t miss this!” There was a short paused, “Hey dad?
“What’s up?”
“Who are all these guys?” Simon said very curious.
“These are our friends! Aren’t they best!” Mr. Chang said with a cheerful smile.
“Yeah... I suppose so. Where is uncle Lee and Aunt Mae and everyone else?”
“Oh.... They... They couldn’t make it.” Simon’s dad said hesitantly.
“Oh really? Huh? Didn’t think they would miss your anniversary. Where is Mom and Mary?”
