Swiping the mascara wand up on my lashes, I was humming the words to the new single released by Halsey. My lashes were being coated in black mascara as I got ready for my birthday dinner. I heard a knock on the door and I paused my music as my mother walked in.
"Amy, we need to go! Your grandparents are already at the restaurant. Hurry up!" She snapped at me as I finished my makeup.
With a huff, I put my makeup away and stood up smoothing my black dress down my stomach and thighs. Grabbing my new wedges, I ran down the stairs. My dog stood at the door looking up at me solemnly with a whine. I sighed and rubbed him on his head as he licked my arm. With a giggle, I kneeled down and kissed him on the top of his head promising that we wouldn't be long.
I finally walked out of the door and locked it behind me. I ran to the car and hopped in the front seat. The car backed up and headed down our street. We talked the whole way there about the excitement of turning eighteen. I giggled and hit my vape as we turned into the Italian restaurant.
"At least I won't have to flirt my way into a vape shop anymore mom!" I giggled as we exited the vehicle.
My mom rolled her eyes as we maneuvered through the restaurant finally finding my grandma. She smiled at me and hugged my towering figure. She was making a fuss at my shoes because she looked like a Christmas elf beside my six foot figure. I chuckled at her feisty persona and escaped off to the bathroom.
With my bladder relieved, my makeup checked, I started the walk towards my table. I saw a male sitting in my booth talking to my grandparents. I arrived at our booth and caught a glimpse of the stranger and recognized that it was my older brother.
I screamed and cried as my brother hugged me.
"Why did you not tell me you were coming?! Last time we talked, you were still deployed in Afghanistan!" I was crying and hugging him tightly as he chuckled in my ear.
"I had to surprise you, little sister." He whispered as he pulled me against him.
It all seemed too much with his hot breath in my ear, his hands hugging my hips, and his body against mine. I let go and kissed him on the cheek as we sat down in the booth together. We talked about his deployment and life over seas. When our food arrived, I felt his hand land on my thigh. My dress had ridden up and was close to showing off my crotch covered by a lacy thong. A blush covered my cheeks and turned my face rosy. All throughout dinner, his hand never moved and stayed on my thigh. I marked it off as innocent and shrugged it off.
My birthday dinner ended with presents and pictures. After our photoshoot was over, we went to our cars when my brother called my name.
"Hey Little Sis, wanna go take a ride with your big brother?" He asked with a smirk on his face.
"As long as we can go fast," I replied with a smirk as we walked towards his yellow mustang.
We got in the car and sped out of the parking lot onto the main road. The windows were rolled down and we were giggling at my hair blowing everywhere. He got off the main road and I looked at him confused as he went the wrong way back to our house. He just smiled and grabbed my hand, caressing my thumb as we drove down the dirt road. He stopped at a clearing and cut the engine.
"Tyler, where are we?" I asked as he popped the trunk and jumped out of the car.
He grabbed a duffel bag and opened my door. Grabbing my hand, we walked to the middle of the clearing. He opened the bag and pulled out a blanket. Unrolling it, he laid it on the grass and sat down. He grabbed my hand and pulled me down onto him. I landed in his lap which drew a deep chuckle from him.
"Look up." He whispered in my ear.
The sun was starting to set in the west; the sky was an array of colors. Pinks, purples, blues, oranges, and yellows painted the sky. The crickets were starting to chirp and a few rogue lightning bugs were starting to rise from the grass. It looked like something from a painting.
"God is such a beautiful artist," I sighed as I played with the new cross chain hanging from my neck, a birthday present from my grandparents.
Tyler played with my hair as we watched the sun set. We sat in silence and watched the sky. In that moment, I felt complete. I finally turned eighteen, my brother came home safely from deployment, my family was happy, and I felt like I was in the exact place God wanted me to be.
Tyler cleared his throat and said, "Amy, I really missed you. When I was deployed, I saw terrible things. These things haunt my mind every day, and the war over there opened my eyes. Every time I went out on a mission, I prayed that God would pull me through so that I could see your beautiful face again. Every single time I woke up, I stared at your graduation picture that you sent to me at the beginning of the year. I went through each day determined to live so that I could come back home and see you again. I counted down the days until I could come back home and surprise you. I've been here for you since you were born. On this day, eighteen years ago, I promised to be the best big brother for you. I watched you excel in school, experience your first heartbreak, drink for the first time, and get your first job. When I heard that you graduated top of your class and received a full ride to your first choice of college, I cried," he turned me around grabbed my face and stared into my eyes,"you are going to accomplish amazing things. I am so proud of you little sister."
I smiled widely and hugged him tightly. I had missed my big brother so much. He was my rock and having him away was the hardest thing. He rubbed the top of my head as we held each other. Once the sun was completely down, we packed the blanket back up and ran to his car as it started to rain. We jumped into his car as we laughed at our wet hair. Tyler grabbed my chin softly, and kissed me passionately. I kissed him back as he grabbed my neck. He broke off the kiss and started the car.
...
We arrived home and saw Sammy, our pit bull mix, sitting at the window.
"I wonder if he will remember me." Tyler stated as we walked in.
Sammy ran up to me his tail wagging a hundred miles an hour. He noticed Tyler next to me and instantly recognized him. Sammy jumped on him and licked his face repeatedly as Tyler laughed and hugged him. Sammy was so excited that his favorite person was home. He followed us up the stairs as Tyler walked into his room which was adjacent to mine.
