"According to the police, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford just vanished into thin air," Jan announced as she climbed out of the BMW. She was the very picture of a young financial professional from her perfectly trimmed bangs to her immaculate navy pantsuit. It was a bit too warm for so many layers, but it helped to look official when you were entering people's homes. She cross-referenced an image on her phone with the house in front of her. "809 Walnut Lane. This is the place."
The driver side door opened up and Toby stepped out. "Nice yard, good neighborhood. Shouldn't be hard to resell this one," he sighed. He couldn't believe the bank was still sending him on these tedious foreclosure checks after three years. He had hoped to have his own office by now. At least now he had a partner to keep him company. Jan was fresh out of Harvard and very attractive, which did wonders for his mental health. It would have been even better if she wasn't such a ice-cold all-business no-nonsense shark, but at least she was easy on the eyes.
Jan moved through the house, stylus tapping at her tablet as she checked boxes and made notes. Toby took his time. He wandered around shouting lousy jokes and non-sequiturs from the other rooms. Jan was not impressed. As far as she was concerned, he was just trying to get into her pants like all the others. Laugh at one stupid joke and the next thing you know you're getting invited to dinner. Not that he was bad looking or anything. He was fit, good jawline, well-groomed, and only a few years older. If he wasn't a coworker he'd be a prime candidate for a relationship.
"Maybe they were kidnapped," Toby posited, slamming the fridge. "Or maybe they robbed a museum and have to lay low with all the stolen paintings." He could almost hear Jan rolling her eyes from the other room.
It really was erie how undisturbed everything was. Toby entered the bedroom half expecting to find the couple taking a nap. It was empty, of course. The rest of the house had been fairly neat, but this room was a mess. The curtains had been pulled down, there were tattered clothes strewn across the floor, and the bed looked like a cyclone hit it. In the center of it all, there was a game board.
The game's bright colors had faded over the years. The title, Chimera, was printed across the top in old-style carnival lettering. A cartoonish drawing of a demon's face dominated the center. A track of red, yellow, and blue spaces ran from the start on its forehead, around the board, and up to the title which served as the last square.
"Looks like they didn't even finish their game," Toby muttered to himself.
Jan walked in. "Did you say something important, Toby?"
"Do I ever?" He chuckled, alone, "No. It's nothing. They just left this weird board game out."
"That belongs to the Estate. Don't touch it," she said dismissively before turning to examine the bathroom.
"Yeah sure," sighed Toby. "But check it out. This must be an antique! The art looks kind of 'dawn of animation' so maybe the thirties or forties?"
"I don't play games." remarked Jan, looking at her tablet. "Waste of time."
"Why does that not surprise me?" Toby picked up one of the little plastic game pieces and examined it. It looked like some sort of mythical creature that he didn't recognize. The overall body shape was like a centaur, but instead of a horse's body it was more reptilian. It had two animalistic heads, and three delicate tails painstakingly posed behind it. He stared into its tiny vacant eyes.
"Looks like we're going to get an early lunch." Jan's words snapped him out of his trance.
"When's your next meeting, Jan?"
"I'm free until 1:45."
"Same. How about we stay and try this board game?"
"Did you not hear me? I don't play games. We're done here. Let's go."
Toby sighed. "How about the loser buys lunch?"
"I'm not in need of any financial assistance, Toby."
"I think you're just afraid you'd lose." He just wanted her to relax.
"Not if the game requires any sort of skill." She just wanted him to shut up. "Fine."
"There we go." Toby lifted up the game from the floor and placed it on the corner of the bed. Jan grabbed a pair of chairs from the dining room as Toby read the rules aloud.
"each player will roll in turn and be
turned as they answer cards learnedly.
Come to the end you'll be restored
but be careful not to come on the board
you'll lose and remain for eternity"
