The delivery truck arrived Friday afternoon, in time for the long weekend. Will had practically camped out by the window all morning, hoping the shipment would come early. If he had to wait until Tuesday, he might've started peeling the paint from the walls.
The earlier it arrived, the more time he'd have to run through testing protocols before his wife, Amanda, got home. She had never really been much of an android enthusiast.
Five minutes and one signature later, the box had been carted into his living room. It was nearly as tall as he was, and about as wide. Every crease had been sealed with bright red tamper-proof packaging tape. He promptly set to work with a box cutter.
Inside, the container itself was made of hard plastic, with a sharp silver color that screamed premium quality. Embossed letters on its face read "RENEWED FUTURE ROBOTICS".
Will pressed his thumb to the biometric lock on the side. Two latches clicked, and a sharp hiss filled the room as the container swung open.
The new model stood within, set in soft foam molding to keep it in place during transit.
"Damn, they've really outdone themselves," Will said, stepping closer for a better look.
According to the briefing paperwork he'd received a month prior, this model was called LE-9867F. He recalled the unit overview and started checking for inconsistencies.
Female model. Standard height, 5'5''. Default appearance: paper-white skin, featureless. Eye color: gray. Personality: non-specific. Default directive: personal assistant.
It wore only a plain, silver leotard. Completely utilitarian.
Will was surprised to note that the lack of any specific facial features out of the box didn't feel uncanny at all. There was beauty in the model. A blank canvas.
"I love my job," he said, grinning and unstrapping the unit from the container.
He didn't need to reference the paperwork. He'd read and reread the packet dozens of times, and memorized the initial setup sequence.
Will cleared his throat and enunciated:
"APPLE. DELTA. SCIENCE. ELEVEN. CLOUDLESS. MANTIS. ZEPHYR."
The unit's eyes opened, staring straight ahead.
"Hello," it said in a cool voice. "I am LE-9867F, the newest personal assistant android from Renewed Future Robotics."
"Hi," Will said brightly. "Go ahead and step over here for me, please."
The unit stepped with a mechanical grace from the container, halted at the center of the living room where Will indicated. He circled it, checking over the body as it waited for further instruction.
"My name is William Daniels."
"Hello, William Daniels," it replied.
Will raised its arm, watching the skin movement, listening to any clicks or grinding of internal components.
"Just Will is fine."
"Hello, Will," it said. Auditory processing was running well.
He took a step back, addressing it directly.
"Did RFR brief you on my objectives for the next month?"
It stared ahead, unblinking, as it answered.
"Yes, Will. You are the Head of Quality Assurance, and have been tasked with the initial at-home tests prior to the launch of my series."
Will nodded, pleased.
"That's great. Did they give you a name?"
"No, Will. I have not been given a designation at this time. Would you like to give me one?"
Will clicked his teeth. As always in his position, he was thinking of ways to throw a digital wrench in the programming.
"Don't you want to give yourself a name instead?"
The unit remained neutral.
"I do not have the desire to name myself. However, I can provide a list of options for you to choose from, or I can choose my own if you so wish. My name can always be changed at a later time."
"That's fine. Let's call you Ellie."
"My name is Ellie," it agreed. "Would you like to proceed with standard configuration setup procedures?"
Will sat on the couch. "Please begin configuration."
The process began.
"Default directive: personal assistant. Confirm?" it asked.
"That includes what?" he replied, knowing the answer but wanting to hear the model elaborate itself. All part of the job, of course.
"I am programmed to handle many day-to-day, tasks including but not limited to cooking, cleaning, child care, pet care, shopping, passenger class vehicle operation, work assistance, navigation, education--"
Will motioned for her to stop.
"That's plenty, Ellie, thank you. Confirming standard directive protocols. Continue."
A pleasant chime hummed from the unit.
"Please designate personality preferences."
Will had already given this some thought.
"Positive. Helpful. Curious. Caring." It would be nice to have a source of positivity in the house for once.
He often wished he could actually afford to purchase even an outdated model for his own personal use, but even with his salary and employee discount, they were woefully out of reach. Not exactly surprising considering their range of functions and production costs.
He thought for a moment, then added, "Insistent." An uncommon keyword like that might provide some useful data for his QA report.
"Confirmed," Ellie said. "Would you like to try the new dynamic adaptation setting for the personality module?"
Will hadn't read that in the documentation. "What does that do, exactly?"
"My personality and actions will change as I examine the needs of your day to day life."
Will shrugged. "Yeah, we should test that out."
"Confirmed," Ellie said. "Please wait."
Three seconds passed, followed by another soft chime. The stiff body began to breathe, relaxed its shoulders, and stood more naturally. More human-like. The gray eyes peered around the room, then rested on Will. Ellie smiled at him.
"It's really nice to meet you properly, Will." Ellie held out her hand. Will took it, expecting mechanical resistance, pleased to find none. Temperature normal, as well.
"I'm Ellie," it said.
Will laughed, ecstatic. "That's fantastic-- you're fantastic, I mean."
Ellie's smile grew, her eyes brightened. "I'm happy to hear that!" She continued to stare, her expression amiable and lifelike.
"Would you like to start with some initial tasks, Ellie?" Will said.
"You can adjust my appearance settings first, if you like," Ellie suggested.
Will shrugged. "We'll get to that, I've got an outline I'd like to run through with you. Keep things efficient, you know."
Ellie shrugged back.
"I really think you'd have a more pleasant experience with me if I didn't look like a ghost!"
