In the late morning hours, the sun woke me more than any sort of circadian rhythm did. Somehow that day I felt particularly sluggish. The past few days had been twice as exhausting as I started to learn how insatiable Bao could get once she got going. It was almost like intense work only served to build up her pent up lust even more.

I sighed, really, really reluctant as I went to get up but there was work to be done. Duty calls and all that. At least I tried to get up. A heavy paw was weighing down on my chest belonging to a certain, similarly sleepy Ren Xiongmao.

Turning my head, I saw Bao still blissfully asleep, breathing slowly and deeply. She was sleeping soundly like nothing in the world could wake her. I really didn't want to do that to her either so I attempted to get out beneath her without doing so but it was situations like this that made me acutely aware of the size difference between us. Bao, being what she is, was a suitably bear sized woman and her paws alone weighed a whole lot.

I huffed and struggled but no dice. In fact, the more I shuffled around, the more she began to cuddle me and hugged my body close to her. It was so cute and I did feel bad about breaking this up but I'm pretty sure if I hadn't, she would have crushed my ribcage. Brute force obviously didn't work so I tried another approach.

I rolled over with the limited movement I had until I could face her. Aww man, her sleeping face was so adorable, really makes one want to keep sleeping but duty called and drastic measures needed to be taken. I knew her weakness after all.

Leaning into her, I peppered a few kisses around her nose, making Bao's face twitch and her giggle in her sleep. Finally, she lifted her paw and scratched the itch I caused, letting me slip out and get up. I took a deep stretch, making a few joints crack and me aware of how sore I was from last night. God was it worth it though because despite the slight pain, I was in high spirits. The last few weeks had been both fun and profitable. Bao had been working her butt off for my sake and took a huge load off my shoulders. She deserved to sleep in a bit.

At least that was the plan. "Mmmmhhh... MMMHH!? Magooooooo..." Bao patted around the spot on the futon where I just slept and got visibly irritated by me not being there. Her brow furrowed as she couldn't seem to find me until finally. "MAGO!" She shot up wide awake, scanning her in a wild panic until her eyes landed on me and she instantly calmed down again.

I sighed before breaking into a chuckle. "I JUST got up, Bao. You've gotta learn to sleep without me sometime."

Predictably, she pouted, burying her face in her pillow. "Nnnngghhh... I don't wanna learn that. Why don't YOU learn to stay in bed so we can cuddle longer?"

"You know we can't do that. Who's gonna tend the crop? And if I do give into your demand, when's it gonna be enough? We're not gonna get anything done then."

She reluctantly got up while I got dressed. Suddenly I felt a heavy weight on my shoulders and two big mounds on my back. Bao nuzzled my neck as she wrapped her arms around me. "Well I know of a certain someone who couldn't get enough 'cuddles' last night either." She placed a kiss on my cheek as she giggled.

I playfully rolled my eyes and craned my head over to meet her lips with mine for a brief but tender kiss. "You know that's different, Bao. The early bird may get the worm but what we do the night before is none of his business." We laughed among ourselves, getting ready for the day ahead.

"You know, we could go to the market later and pick up some sake if you want. Thanks to your hard work, we've got a much bigger budget now, I think we can afford to splurge for some of the good stuff." I mused as I wrapped a cloth belt around my shirt.

"That sounds awesome! It's been a while since I've had any. I don't even know if I could tell what a good one even is. Heh, but either way it's a good idea. We still have to celebrate after all."

I exhaled out of my nose with a befuddled expression. "Celebrate? Is it your birthday? Did I miss a holiday?"

She laughed. "Maybe I'm being silly. But I've been here for half a month now. I think that deserves a LITTLE celebration at least."

"You might be..." My heart sunk as the realization kicked in. All the blood drained from my face as I tried not to show my growing dread. "...today? That's today?"

Bao cocked her head, looking over at me with a jovial grin. "Yeah? 2 weeks. I know it ain't exactly an anniversary or something but it feels kinda special to me. What's the matter? What are you getting all pale for? I didn't expect you to give a me a present or anything." Her face turned from jovial to concerned. "Is... is something wrong?"

I shook my head and hid my worry with a smile. I hadn't actually told her what the bandits said back when they first robbed me. Time completely passed me by. "No, no nothing. It's just... time went by so fast I... I guess you don't notice it going by when you're having fun."

She looked relieved, giving me one more squeeze from behind after she finished putting on her underwear. A black pair of panties with white spots and a similarly patterned bra. "You're silly. I've had a great time too, babe. Love you."

"Yeah, I love you too." I couldn't quite manage to shake the heaviness from my heart. I looked outside. The sun was already far above the horizon. It must have been getting close to noon. My chest tightened as I thought about what to do. What to say. In a panic, I got her off of me and awkwardly laughed my way out of her hug. "Ah, sorry. I must probably smell a little after...hrmm last night."

Bao rubbed her neck sheepishly. "Hehe, yeah. I'm still a little sticky too."

I snapped my fingers as if an idea had just come to me. "Hey, we still got a little bit of a head start. Why don't you go up to the springs. Take a nice shower in the falls and I'll take one after. That way we can start the day nice and fresh."

She still looked a little suspicious but shrugged it off. "Okay. Will do. No peeking, right?" She joked as she passed me by and leaned down for another peck. And after that, I was all alone while watching her head out the door and up the hill.

There she went, the first girl I ever loved. Her absence made the weight of the air bear down on me twice as hard. I turned my gaze to the portrait of my parents, heading over to it and taking it down. The lockbox was still there and full to bursting with money. Money that those bastards probably wanted all of. The greed of people like them knows no bounds.

Most of this money I couldn't really call mine. Bao had worked her hardest to earn this. She didn't deserve to have people take from her again. It was her share and I would make sure that she would have it. I took out a small bag and filled it with a good chunk of the coins, shoveling almost half of it into the bag.

In the middle of doing this however, I heard a familiar noise. There was a wagon coming up the hill. The clattering of its cargo and the whistling of its masked driver announcing its arrival. A shiver ran down my spine and I started to hyperventilate.

It came to a halt in front of my hut and I heard that vile, mocking voice again. "Mago! Here we are again, just like promised. I see the door's been repaired, what a shame for the wasted effort."

I pulled the string of the bag, closing it up when...

...the door busted open, breaking some of it into splinters. The three armed bandits entered, scanning the room until their gaze landed on me. Frozen in place, I dropped the bag, steeling myself for the confrontation. "You could have just knocked."

Their leader laughed, his associates drawing their blades to appear even more intimidating than they already were. "Where's the fun in that? Makes much more of an impression and people don't get stupid ideas like locking us out or running away. Hah, but I see you're already at it. Bagging up our money. Well, what are you waiting for? Hand it over!"

"Okay, okay, listen please! You can have whatever is over there in the lockbox. It's more than enough. But please, leave this bag alone! I need that money!"

He furrowed his brow, approaching me with a threatening aura about him. "Are you trying to short change us? Bitch, do you not know how this works? It's all or nothing Mago! You are supporting the war effort here. Without us, this whole valley would be crawling and infested with succubi, demons and worse. The mamono would have long ruled this place if it wasn't for us so don't start bullshitting us now!"

I barked back, my knees trembling as I forced the words out. "Maybe it would be better if they did! The real monsters are already here anyway."

With a heavy stride, he marched toward me. I doubled over as he kicked his knee into the pit of my stomach. Collapsing on the floor, I felt close to vomiting. The pain was unimaginable. It felt like my organs had been rearranged.

The bandit knelt down beside me and mockingly picked up the bag I dropped. "The fuck did you just say you little shit? Are you a damn mamono supporter now or something? Who the fuck do you think you are speaking to us like that. Now lie down in your filth while we collect our dues."

I was left coughing on the floor as I helplessly watched one of the other guys move over to the lockbox. "Um... boss? How much money is in the bag?"

"Dunno, quite a bit. Why?"

"Take a look yourself, this alone is almost as much as he had last time. If there's more in the bag, he just made bank the last two weeks."

"No way, let me see that! Holy hell! Magooooo! Real go getter aren't you? Wait a minute, let me just..." He took the bag and turned it upside down, pouring its contents back in. His face went from impressed to highly suspicious as she saw the overflowing box full of money.

The boss turned back to me, kneeling down and looming over me as he grabbed a bunch of my hair. "Now Mago... that's a whole lot of money you made there. But you know it doesn't really make sense to me. We come here and take your money and fully aware that we would be coming back and take it again, you decide to work TWICE as hard and reel in TWICE as much? Something's fishy here Mago and it's not the smell of your backwater shithole. Where did you get this money from and how?"

Holding my stomach in pain, I winced as I squinted up at him, preparing myself for the worst. "It's just in my nature. I'm a hard worker. You wouldn't get it."

"You little shit!" The bandit raised his fist as he cursed through his teeth. I prepared myself for the blow, shutting my eyes and expecting the pain. But it didn't come.

The noise of someone else coming to the hut made him hesitate. "Hey Mago! I forgot my towel do you where they..." Bao entered the doorframe, at first blissfully unaware of the situation. She fell silent once she got a look inside. It was the last thing I wanted to happen.

I still remember her face in that moment. All color drained from her face, her expression bereft of emotion. She saw me lying on the floor, being threatened by the bandit leader. Her eyes darted between me and him, trembling as she clenched her fists. "What do you think you're doing in our home?"

The man looked at her in disbelief, then he turned to me. "So you ARE a traitor." He forcefully shoved me away then got up and moved toward her.

I cried out to Bao, trying my best to get after him before his henchmen restrained me. "Leave her out of this! Bao! Run!" I was pinned to the floor, made to watch as he approached her.

"So, who are you then? You one of them Ren Xiongmao things, right? Well, this is human country, meaning you ain't welcome here." He unsheathed his curved sword, snarling at Bao in an attempt to intimidate her.

However, Bao's eyes were solely on me, watching me being held down. "You hurt him." Her eyes were cold as ice, no life behind them. It was almost scary to see her like this. She gripped the door frame, her claws digging into the bamboo.

The bandit continued posturing, dragging his finger over the blade as he got close to her. "Yeah, about that. You two seem... close. You the reason he got all that money now. Makes sense, what's he doing? Whoring you out? Using you for manual labor what is it?"

"You... hurt him!" She responded through bared teeth. The bamboo was creaking under her palm as her grip tightened.

"Don't you hear me? You fucking beasts don't listen, do ya? I'm gonna make myself a nice fucking coat out of you!" Raising his blade above his head, the bandit prepared his downswing.

"BAO!" I cried out her name in vain, struggling against the two men pinning me. I thought this was it. But then...

*crack*

Me and the other bandits were similarly stunned when Bao tore out a long stalk of bamboo and parried the bandit's blade. The man was first confused then furious as his blade hacked into the fiber.

"You hurt my boyfriend. I'm not going to let you do it again. This is our home. If anyone isn't welcome here, it's you." She barked those words at him with an angry glare in her eyes.

He laughed. "Heh! What authority do you have to tell me where I can and can't go. You're just a filthy, ratty..." With one twist of her staff, Bao disarmed him, his sword flying out of his hand and sticking into the floor. "UGHHHH! AAHH!" One strike after another shut him up as Bao spun around her bamboo, smacking him in the side of the face, jabbing his sides and finally swiping him off his feet and stabbing him in the gut after he hit the ground.

"Ughhhh..." He barely had any time to react before the pain caught up to him and he curled up on the ground.

With him taken care of, Bao turned her attention to the other two, walking towards them with deadly intent. They watched her slackjawed, both letting go of me as she backed up and drew their own swords. "What do you think you're doing? Stop or we're gonna... we're gonna..." One of them stammered, barely getting a sentence out.

"You're gonna leave our house. You and all others like you. You're not going to take ANYTHING from us EVER again."

"What are you standing around like that for? Get her!" The female bandit commanded the other man, spurring him into action.

"RRRAAAAAHHH!" He brainlessly charged at her, immediately getting kicked away by her and flying against the wall. He hit his head hard enough to immediately be out cold.

Just one more was left standing and she was figuratively pissing herself in fear as my towering girlfriend loomed over her. Her eyes had a menacing shine as she tapped her staff on her hand.

Her knees shook as she dropped her sword. "Nope, I'm good!" She instantly ditched, running for the hills as she bolted outside. Bao snarled after her until she was out of sight, her blood still running hot.

As soon as the danger had passed though, she twirled the staff around like a pro getting back into the default position of a combat routine. I was in awe of her.

Her face softened like a mask falling off of it when she turned to me. "Oh my god Mago, are you hurt badly? What did they do to you? Is anything broken? Bruised? Bleeding?"

I could barely contain my excitement as I got up, laughing in disbelief as I hugged her. "You were amazing, Bao! When did you learn to fight like that? They didn't stand a chance against you!"

She blushed, embarrassed about me having seen that side of her. "Ah well, it comes kinda naturally to my kind. What did they want though? Are those the same people that broke into your house last time?"

This time it was my turn to be bashful. "Yeah. They are. They wanted money just like last time. I knew they would be coming back. They said as much."

She cupped my cheeks worry written all over her face. "Oh babe why didn't you tell me?"

I cupped hers in return as I caressed her cheek. "Because I didn't want you to get roped into this. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you had gotten hurt. I don't want you to suffer anymore than you already have."

"And you think I want you to? You don't hide stuff like this from me. We're a team and losing you would be much worse than a bunch of money."

I smiled at her, combing my fingers through her hair. "Alright. No secrets, I promise." Our lips were drawn to each other as we met in a sweet, tender kiss relieving all the anxiety of before. In this moment I was just happy it was over. Well, at least almost.

"You... fucking... monsters..." We heard the wheezing moans of the bandit leader crawling over the floor. He was reaching for his sword only making incremental progress.

Bao sighed as she exchanged an annoyed look with me. "Maybe we should deal with this first." She pouted, hesitant to let go of me. The second she did, she put on a scary face again. Even knowing that it's just a front, it still sent a slight shiver down my spine.

Just short of reaching his blade, Bao hooked its handle with her staff and launched it further away. He grunts in frustration and rolls onto his back. "You sold your own kind, Mago! Should be ashamed of yourself. Thanks to you all the people here will lose more than just their income. Just you wait, the day will come. And soon."

I crouched over him just like he did to me before. "There isn't anything for you to defend us from. You are the threat to our lives. You are ruining our lives, you steal our livelihood and you are the one making us scared of going outside. How can you think you aren't everything you are fear mongering people about?"

"They are not like us, Mago. They are corrupt, depraved and they want to take control of us. You'll see that someday."

I got up, shaking my head. He was too far gone. "You are already all of that and more. Leave Tan Gendo! And don't come back!"

He laughed, coughing from it while holding his ribs. "Or what? You sic your pet on me?"

"I wouldn't insult her like that. You're at her mercy right now and I don't like you talking to my girlfriend like that either. You're leaving and you're going to leave everything you stole from OUR people as well! Don't you ever dare count yourself among them again."

The bandit weighed off his options facing the two of us but hesitantly, he nodded and capitulated. He gritted his teeth as we let him get up, careful for any funny business but it seemed the fight had left him. Gathering his last remaining companion, he left our premises and disappeared over the ridge. I almost felt like I was soaring from the weight being lifted off my shoulders. Tan Gendo was once again safe.

"They're gone." I said absentmindedly as I leaned against the door frame.

A pair of soft, furry paws wrapped around me from behind. "I sure hope they got your message."

"I think they definitely got yours." I chuckled as I stroked her arms. "God my legs do feel like jelly though, not gonna lie."

"You did great, babe. It takes a lot of courage to stand up to bullies like that. Maybe thanks to you, Tan Gendo has seen the last of those guys." Bao rested her head on top of mine, nuzzling my hair.

"Thanks to US you mean. And I think you're overselling my part in it quite a bit." My gaze wanders to the horse drawn wagon in front of our house. It was full to bursting with all kinds of valuables, boxes full of money, food and raw materials that the people around here had been working hard for to earn and harvest. "Now that we have our peace though, let's share the good news with our people."

Bao and I may not have gotten much work done that day but to see the relief and the smiles of the people as we returned their property was worth more than a days income. The people of Tan Gendo were thankful and showered us with praise and shows of appreciation. A lot of people even fawned over Bao when I told them what she did. Especially kids were becoming big fans of hers, climbing all over her like a tree. Finally she got all the love and adoration I already believed she deserved.
