We continued North heading for Bend Oregon, between Lakeview and Bend was roughly 175 miles of flat roads, hills and everything in between. I remembered one stretch where some folks from some College was doing a test using wind to power a car with a boat sail strapped to the top of it. I swear the things people paid money to study could give you nightmares. It wasn't the topic of what was being studied, it was the vast amount of money being thrown at the stupidest things, for example a zombie virus.

Thankfully the Mountain bikes had a wide range of gears so the Mountains were not as terrible as they could have been, it could also be the changes to our bodies as well. Either way the hundred and seventy five plus miles was definitely giving the girls a good work out. As the days went by and the riding continued, they started riding faster, lasting longer and had energy to burn. They got use to the way their vision had changed and adapted to the rest of their senses much faster then I could have anticipated.

I did notice that Tami had had an easier time with the changes then either Charlie or I did. Kids naturally adapt much easier to conditions then Adults normally do. Could be the same with their bodies as well. It would have to be something for the Scientists to figure out, as for me I would drop off the documents, give them a brief on everything I had seen, done and experienced and after that, I was out of there. No way am I getting locked up again in some lab and getting experimented on like some damn lab rat.

Besides I made a promise to both Charlie and Tami that we would find a real home, one they would be safe in and not ever feel like they would ever be forced into anything again by anyone. I pulled over to the scenic overlook that looked out over Bend. Even from here I could tell that the City was over run by the Zombie's and they were spread out pretty evenly. Being that the Highway ran right down the middle of it, there was no way we would get past them easily.

"Looks pretty bad.." Tami said quietly.

"Yeah, but lets face it, it would be flat out boring if it was easy." I replied and she grinned at me. I glanced along the highway and pointed off down the road.

"We'll stop at the Mini-Mart and find a City map, we'll map out a route to take us around that mess." I said and they both nodded. We rode the bikes until we were roughly two tenths of a mile from the small building. Then we pushed the bikes along the road keeping our eyes and ears opened. With the Zombie's spread out it meant no one was alive within the City, no food readily available. But that didn't mean that people were not hidden around the out skirts just waiting to ambush the unsuspecting.

After the last ambush I had started teaching them self defense. The first rule, do whatever it takes to win, remember they are out to take what is yours, weather that means possessions, your body or your life. That means they will not stop until they have one of those and maybe not even then. So be prepared to do what ever you have to in order to win.

I have no problem nut punching a fool if it means I win. I also have no trouble killing someone if I must in order to save my life or the lives of others. Both were doing very well, turns out with the added strength from the Cure, both would be able to overcome most men especially sense most would underestimate them.

I continued to listen to the surrounding area and except for the few small animals, nothing moved or shuffled out of the ordinary. After parking the bike, I tapped the door on the building and watched to see if anyone, or zombie, might show up. Nothing appeared, it was unusual but not unheard of, mostly zombies caught inside these places were let out when they chased after the uninformed who just walked up and opened the door.

I found a City map and tucked it away and after a quick check, found most of the shelves empty of anything that might be of use. Walking outside I noticed that the small animals had gone quiet. The Girls had also noticed as well, we all scented the air. No zombies around but there was a human hiding off in the bushes.

"What do we do?" Tami whispered. I climbed on the bike while calling back.

"If they were friendly they would have come out and said something. If they are sneaking around, then they are not friendly and I have no use for them." I replied loud enough I knew they had to of heard me.

We all turned to watch a woman stumble out of the bushes. I remembered her as one of the faces that was in the first car that drove off from Reno after the others had been forced out as bait for the Zombies. I watched her in her ragged and torn dress, or what was left of it as most seemed to be held up by several knots. From her appearance and somewhat wild eyes, I figured talk would not do much at this point.

"Climb on the Camper and strap in." I told her. She looked at the small camper with a confused expression. Tami climbed off her bike and being smaller then everyone else the woman did not seem to be scared of Tami.

"This way." Tami said in a soothing tone. She took the woman's hand and guided her to the camper then showed her how to climb up and then buckled her in. The woman seemed to panic slightly when Tami tried to get back down.

"Ride with her for now, I'll put your bike on the rack." I told Tami and went about securing the bike and then making sure everyone else was secured. I also handed the woman a water bottle from inside the camper.

"Just sip it slowly, or you will get sick." I explained to her, she looked dehydrated. Then I handed her a couple of the pancakes from breakfast that we use as snacks along the way. Again I told her to eat slowly to keep from getting sick. No idea how long it was sense she last ate anything, and after a quick look over her appearance, it didn't appear she had been bitten by a zombie either. Time would tell and I wasn't about to share my blood with anyone who could end up being dangerous.

Charlie and I started riding, we took it easy to conserve energy in case we needed to outrun anything that happen to come at us from the tree line. Using the map we cut down small country roads that would have almost no traffic of any kind, or so we were hoping. One of the newer looking neighborhoods showed off one house near the top of the hill as having not only solar power panels but a system that heated water off the sun as well. I parked the bike and camper off the side and out of the way of easy view from possible zombie stragglers.

When I checked this house, I checked every door, every room and every closet. I would not be getting sloppy again in my securing a place for nightfall.

"Place is secure and even has running hot water." I told Charlie while Tami cheered for a hot bath. Charlie and I laughed at Tami while the woman just watched her. She was much calmer now after having listened to us while we rode for the last two hours. We pulled up and into the garage which I had opened up so we could secure the bikes and camper. Then we all went inside and took in a few things from the camper that could be cooked properly.

Another reason I had picked the place was because it had a fireplace so we could cook if we needed to in case the appliances were not part of the solar power system. I sent Charlie and Tami to help our latest arrival with getting showered, cleaned up and into some proper clothes once she was dried off. The family who had lived here had not had the time to pack much of anything before leaving. Maybe they never made it back home either.

While the women got cleaned up I went back to the garage and checked on the work bench area. They also had similar bikes as what we were riding, so I set about making adjustments to the bikes rims, changing tires with new ones that they had hanging on the walls as well. By the time the women were cleaned up, the bikes were back in nearly new condition. Even sported new chains and fresh grease on the wheel bearings and pedals. The last thing we needed was break downs from lack of service and at a bad time.

They were all sitting in the Livingroom watching the sun slowly go down over the Mountains. I walked off and took my own shower, it wasn't going to stay hot for long but it was welcome anyways. After cleaning up and changing clothes I walked out and took a seat while starting a fire in the fireplace. The appliances apparently worked just fine and Charlie and Tami had a large stew pot filled with four cans of soup going and tossed in some venison from a deer I had brought down the day before and it was smelling really good.

We all talked about nothing and everything and laughed now and then as we got comfortable and passed the time.

"My Husband and son use to talk like this all the time." the woman said quietly. Now that she was cleaned up she looked a lot younger then I had originally assumed. Long black hair, light brown skin showed off a Latin heritage. Soft brown eyes that seemed less wild and nervous then when she first arrived with us. We all listened while she spoke.

"Our neighbor got sick, then his eyes turned red after he fell down. He bit my son, Jose, my Husband hit him with a big hammer in the head and pulled our son into the house. We had heard the news about how things were. We tried everything to clean out the wound and then we waited and prayed." she said while staring into the fire.

"Four hours later he was growling, red eyes and clawing at the door every time we made a sound. We had to leave him there and we ran. We packed up the car and drove, we had no idea where we could go. Then while trying to get away from Reno we saw people waving at us from Circus-Circus and we drove there. Too late to realize who they were." she said as she continued, now tears began to fall.

"They wanted the car for a big get away. They beat up my Husband, Tony, then made me do things or they would kill Tony. Two months later, they made Tony and others who they didn't like, run out the front of the Casino, while they took me and two other women with them in the cars to get away." she recited slowly while the rest of us listened.

"The Strongholds would not let them in, I would signal to them that these men were bad and not to be trusted. They figured out what I had done and beat me before leaving me back at the last cross roads before arriving here in Bend. I walked until I found the market, and then you came." she said and as she spoke she finally made eye contact with each of us in turn.

"Well you saved a lot of good people in warning them what kind of men they were even if it did leave you stuck with them." I said quietly. I got up and put away the dishes and rinsed them off, I always tried to leave places like this in good condition in case others needed a safe place to crash for the night. Afterwards I grabbed a blanket and stretched out on the couch. Then Tami and Charlie grinned and ran off, pretty soon they were dragging the mattresses from two of the beds across the floor.

"What are you doing?" I asked. They dropped them on the floor side by side and laid two large comforters on them and then laid on top of the comforters and pulled blankets over themselves while Charlie said,

"We have no idea if the heater works and we know the fireplace does.." she said smiling. I laughed lightly and walked down and grabbed several pillows from the beds and brought them out along with another blanket for the unnamed woman.

"My names Dakota, this is Charlie and Tami. You are welcome to sleep out here or in the bedrooms, your choice." I told her and then laid out on the bed where both Charlie and Tami curled against me. We didn't need much in the way of bedding. Then I felt the mattress shift and looked over to see the woman lay down behind Tami.

"My name is Maria, nice to meet you and your family." she said before she shifted her gaze to the large window. The windows were very tall, while the lower part was covered by curtains, the upper allowed us to see the stars beyond it.

"Oh we're not related.." Tami said quietly to Maria. Everyone was still enjoying the quiet of the evening and the feeling of safety.

"Family is not always by Blood, sometimes the strongest Family are the ones you choose to call your Father, Mother, Brother or Sister." Maria said softly.

"She is right, I spent four tours in the Marines fighting in another Country. Those people that fought beside me felt closer to me then my own Brothers after a while. And I love my Brothers and Sister very much, but the bonds developed during battle go even deeper." I said quietly while watching the stars.

"Wha.. What are you?" Maria gasped as she backed up from us. She was staring into our eyes and I realized too late that we had removed our glasses when we entered the house. With it being full dark now our eyes automatically adjusted to the dim light by glowing slightly.

"We're human, but during the first wave I was bitten. They flew me straight to Nevada, outside of Vegas. The Doctors there injected me with a supposed cure, only they messed up. The cure altered my body a bit. I am stronger, faster, I can see at night and my eyes glow somewhat. Not only that but I am immune to bites." I explained to her and held up my hand. Thankfully while in Reno, and out of boredom, I had ran the printer dry making hard copies of all the files. It took me three trips through the Casino and breaking into Offices in order to snag printers and ink cartridges to get all the documents finished, including my own notes.

I grabbed my bag and pulled out the file, before slowly handing it to her along with a pen light so she could read the papers for herself. Maria must be a freaking speed reader or something because she was flipping papers over quickly while her eyes scanned the papers.

"It looks like they were developing a drug that would have put the sperm in a dormant state, the problem would have come after intercourse, the sperm would have basically woken up..." she paused a bit while looking a page over and sighed as she rolled her eyes, ".. they took a wrong turn here, this is where they accidently ran into the Zombie Virus. If they had just developed a second pill for the males partner which could have trace amounts of the original drug within it, the sperm would have simply stayed dormant and none of this would have happened." she concluded while dropping the papers with a huff of irritation and sadness.

"And you are the patient they spoke of?" she asked looking at me and I nodded. Then she looked at both girls and back at me with her silent question. I explained what had happened during the trip from Lakeview and she asked both of them several questions as well.

"So you are all a walking cure and pretty much the next step in evolution for us all." she said and laid back down next to Tami.

I laid down and thought to myself a long time, "You know a lot about the science in all of this."

"I use to work at a major development and research company. But you can only research just so many drugs for ED (erectile Dysfunction) before you get fed up with the whole thing. I mean seriously the amount of money spent to ensure a man.. umm.." she looked at Tami before changing her words, "... performs versus fighting Cancer is ridiculous. If we put half that effort into what really matters, we would have cures for most major illnesses within a decade." she gruffed sourly while I laughed softly. She looked over and noted Charlie was giggling as well and started laughing.

"I know what you mean, been many a time during all this I wondered to myself, why the hell did a man need a pill when a condom has been working just fine, with precaution, for longer then I have been alive?" I replied and shook my head a bit.

Pretty soon the conversation died away as the girls dozed off first. I was pretty sure that Tami had slipped away during all the science talk. Charlie was sleeping soundly as well and I moved to put a few more logs on the fire to keep it going through until morning. While the girls and I didn't need it, I was sure Maria would not like an Ice cold room to wake up to in the morning.

"What was it like for them when they changed?" Maria asked from the glow of the fire light. She was watching me move and even though I moved with no sound at all, she had been awake.

"Charlie wasn't nearly as bad as I was when I changed. And for Tami it was easier. It is a painful process and takes about five days and after that you feel like you went through either the worst hang over of your life or like you do after a bad run in with a flu bug. Your muscles hurt, your eyes and head hurt, you feel like someone came at you with a vacuum and sucked out all your energy. It takes a couple days of rest and in a dark room so you can relax and regain your strength." I explained to her and looked back at her.

"And if I were to change?" she asked nervously.

"I would say anyone older then 21 to 25 would probably have the same affects as I did. Older then that I have no idea. I figure it was easier on Charlie and Tami because, well, lets face it kids, young adults they tend to adapt a lot easier to changes then adults do in the long run. And the older you are, the more your mind and body try to fight against those changes." I said trying to explain it as how I saw it. I really had no science to back up any of that crap I just spouted.

"Let me explain something here, being Immune to the Zombie's sounds like great fun. But here is the down side. I can't sleep more then four hours at a time and most times much less because I wake up to every noise, every whisper. Sure I am stronger, faster and see at night as well." I said then sat down facing her.

"You and I are young enough to have and raise children, Charlie will be soon and later Tami will want that same option. But have you considered the possibility that the changes in our bodies have made us sterile?" I asked her. Her eyes opened wider at that possibility.

"Have you considered what would happen if you did have sex with someone who was not like us and the outcome of such a union?" I asked her curiously. She shook her head slowly.

"I did this for Charlie because I did not want to have to kill her if she became a zombie. I did it for Tami because the risks of her being attacked out here are fairly high. If we had already been at a base or stronghold or found a real home type environment, I would have said no. I wanted them to have the chance at a real family, not a fifty-fifty chance because of how we are now." I explained slowly. I could see both girls watching us out of the corner of my eye.

"As you said you do not know for certain one way or another." Maria said finally after several minutes of silence. She sat up slowly.

"I am willing to take that chance, I do not want to live in fear. I would rather live my life on my own terms." she said quietly. Then smiled lightly as she added, "Besides I am a scientist, I can be my first test subject once we land in a safe place where such things can be done." I smiled as I listened, Tami pushed my bag towards me and I pulled out a syringe.

"You are a Doctor?" Maria asked me and I shook my head.

"Nope, Marine, while my main function was a sniper, I was also a scout and part of that training is basic training as a medic, just enough to stop a bleeding wound until a real Doctor can take care of the real problems." I said while swabbing my arm and withdrawing blood. She held out her arm and I swabbed it carefully and then injected the blood into her vein.

"It feels hot.." Maria said as she watched her arm with curiosity.

"Come on, come morning you will not appreciate the light. You can take the Master Bedroom and hold up there for the week." I said while pulling her up. Tami stood up and followed us.

"What is she doing?" Maria asked as she hissed in pain from the first wave.
