====================================
It wasn't getting called to the front office that was making me nervous - a year ago, maybe I would have been thrown by a surprise call to meet with a Principal or Vice Principal for an unknown reason. But I was the Lord-Sorcerer now, a Seat of Fertility, and I'd sat in the space between the Real and the Unreal and debated with beings that were older than any modern language, who could destroy a city with their power, and I was still standing.
No, what
was
giving me nerves were all the stares I was getting as I walked down the corridors of the school. Students, and even some teachers, were glancing at me like they
knew
something - and then there were the ones who were openly grimacing as I passed like I was smelling particularly potent.
Benji had split from me, heading to his locker to grab his lunch and meet up with Jay. It wasn't like he could follow me into the office so I knew he'd be waiting to hear what was up after. Aidra was waiting for me around a corner and down the hall, though, knowing I'd be following her from the same direction.
"What's going on?" she asked, clearly getting the same feeling I was.
"I don't know," I said, gesturing that we should keep walking.
"Why don't you just... y'know?" She wiggled her fingers, clearly meaning my magic.
"Feels like a waste since we'll find out in a minute anyway," I said. "And I don't like invading someone's privacy like that."
She rolled her eyes and shrugged. Maybe I should have been concerned that Aidra was the most cavalier ethically of all the girls I knew when it came to magic, and she had the power of fortune and misfortune at her fingertips.
Another couple of turns and we were near the front entrance of the school, and Lauren spotted us coming and stopped to wait before heading into the office. "Any idea what this is?" she asked as we approached, and accepted my quick kiss as we came together.
"No idea," Aidra said. "And Jerry won't hoodoo his voodoo to figure it out."
Lauren shook her head. "And were people-"
"Staring?" I filled in. "Yeah. Weirdly."
"Someone's been talking about something," my girlfriend grimaced.
"Someone's always talking about something, and you guys didn't exactly care about rumours and talking when you decided Aidra should be free to make out with me in the open," I said. "But this can't be that - we wouldn't get called to the office for some PDA."
None of us suggested that it was something good, I mentally noted.
We headed into the main office and Mrs Lawrence, the front desk secretary, pointed us to the waiting area. She, at least, didn't glower or scowl at us and considering she was generally known to be a brick wall of emotions that meant she probably had no idea why we'd been called in. Lauren sat in the seat in the far corner, and I sat next to her, and Aidra moved past us to sit next to Lauren on the other chair in the corner.
The petite goth girl leaned forward, lowering her voice. "So, how do you want to handle whatever this is?" she asked.
"Hard to say when we don't know
what
it is," Lauren murmured.
"Alright, fair," Aidra said. "I mean if it's bad and we need to 'do something.'" She put that in air quotes. "Am I doing something or you, Jerry?"
That was an interesting question. I had the greater breadth of options available to me, but it cost me fuel out of my pool of power. Aidra had fewer options, and she'd mentioned her 'pool of luck' could run low, but it also naturally refilled whereas I had to work harder for mine.
Not that I considered sex with my girlfriends and partners work.
"If it's bad enough we need to do
something
, I'll handle it," I sighed. "But let's see if it can be handled without
that
first, yeah?"
The three of us all leaned back in our seats, watching the ebb and flow of people through the main office. There were a few different secretaries, and the Guidance Counselor's office was connected to the end so they were in and out as well. A few teachers came through, two of them giving us brief glances and one doing a double-take and staring for long enough that I almost broke my own rule and tried to read his thoughts.
Eventually, Mrs. Baldinsarro, one of the Vice-Principals, came out of her office and after a brief quiet conversation with the secretary motioned to the three of us to follow her. We did, and she levelled a stern gaze at each of us as she gestured us into her office.
"Well," the thin, severe woman said. "Not exactly the return to school I was expecting today."
"What exactly is going on, Miss?" Lauren asked as she sat in one of the seats in front of the desk. Aidra and I took the others.
Mrs Baldinsarro was rail thin and wore dark grey or brown pantsuits every day, her mousey brown hair pulled back into a simple braid. The only ornamentation I'd ever seen her wearing was her thin, gold-framed glasses. She raised an eyebrow as she circled her desk and sat down in her chair imperiously. "It seems the three of you have been... busy. During the break, and now at school. I've received a report that you hosted a party, Jeremiah, and that there was a significant amount of
drinking
at said party, and possibly even drug use. The worst of the rumours even suggest some sort of sexual impropriety happened."
It was my turn to raise an eyebrow as she seemed to wait for me to respond to her, but she hadn't asked a question and I wasn't planning on feeding her with more information or the chance to call me a liar.
"Did you host a party over the break, Jeremiah?" she finally asked after a long moment, giving me a look as if she thought I was dumb enough to actually not understand she wanted me to speak.
"I don't see how any get-togethers at my house over the break would be of interest to you, Miss," I said.
Mrs Baldinsarro narrowed her eyes slightly. "And what about the rumours about rampant alcohol and drug use by students of our school in your home, hmm? That
is
of interest to the administration of the school, Mr Grant. As are the disturbing rumours that have been going around."
"I'm sorry, are you asking us about the sexual activity of teenage students?" Lauren asked. "I feel like that's
way
out of bounds."
I would have expected some sort of backtracking then - Lauren had basically played the 'You're being a creepy adult with teenagers' card. Instead, Baldinsarro smirked a little. "When the rumours are accompanied by a credible accusation, it
is
in my purview to investigate, Miss Baxley."
Fuck
. The way Baldinsarro said Lauren's last name clicked as the thing that I'd felt had been missing in my understanding of what was going on. Or at least one of the things. Baldinsarro had been in her first year as the Vice Principal of our school in Lindsey and Angie's senior year - the infamous year where half the graduating class had almost not graduated due to 'issues,' and Lindsey had been at the top of the list of seniors with marred records that had nothing to do with grades. Lauren's parents had stepped in to speak on Lindsey's behalf once or twice since Lindsey's own father was always 'away on business' back then.
Two years later, and now Lauren was in Baldinsarro's sightline for maybe the first time ever for the last name to stick.
"Maybe you should just tell us exactly what the rumours or the accusation are, Miss?" I suggested. "We've been in class all morning and haven't heard anything. I'm sure we can help clear things up."
She gave me a sour glance. "Miss Allard," she said, and her tone suggested she was pretty sure she already knew the answer. "Have you and Mr Grant here been sexually promiscuous on school grounds?"
I had full confidence in Aidra to not give anything away.
"I don't talk to pigs," Aidra said.
I was utterly unprepared for
that
