The First Night
The house was always cold, this time of the year, Albert thought. It wasn't always the weather, though, it was his father. Father never stayed long, even post Yuletide. Once the New Year was entered, he would return to the City, to his business. I suppose that is what it takes to be a successful businessman, but it is not helpful to the family of the businessman. For himself, there was still a week before he had to leave for Oxford, his second term there, Hilary, it is called.
He heard his younger sister stamping down the stairs, in a bad mood- again. It seems that Miss Hargreaves can't keep control of Winifred any more, since she is now thirteen.
"What on earth is the matter, Winnie?"
"Mother just told me I am enrolled at the Cheltenham Ladies College," Winnie replied, "And I am going to be boarding with Aunt Lillian for the whole year!"
"Really? Oh that is excellent news!"
"Excellent? How could that be excellent?"
"Mother really thinks you have the potential to do well at University level. So I wouldn't be too upset," Albert offered, "Otherwise she would keep you here with Miss Hargreaves."
"What?" Winnie was surprised, "Me? At Oxford?"
"Oh, not at Oxford, but there are other opportunities, perhaps even the London School of Medicine for Women," Albert went on, "Be a lot of very hard work, studying to get accepted there, perhaps I can help you?"
"If you're in Oxford, and I'm in London, you won't be able to travel that often."
"Of course I can. The train takes about an hour and a half, and doesn't cost much. I can come down on Friday evenings and return Monday mornings."
"But your own studies?"
"Oh, what Miss Hargreaves has taught us makes the work I am doing easy. You would likely find it as easy as I have, so far."
"But then if I'm in London, there is no need for Miss Hargreaves to be here at all," Winnie said, "Mother will let her go!"
"Ah, now I see," Albert said, not unkindly, "Miss Hargreaves has been mine, then our, governess and teacher forever. She is practically part of the furniture." Winnie nodded, "But don't worry. I overheard part of a conversation between Mother and Miss Hargreaves that now makes sense."
"What makes sense?"
"Mother was saying that she was not going to be left here alone, that Miss Hargreaves can stay," Albert said, "They went quiet when they saw me close by, and I said nothing. So no, Miss Hargreaves won't be leaving us, she will be staying as Mother's companion while Father is working, I assume."
Albert saw a look of relief pass over Winnie's face, "She is my favorite person, other than you."
Albert smiled, "I feel the same way, Winnie." And he did, the fraternal relationship was strong, ever since she was a baby. They had done a lot of things together, from playing in the yard to picking blackberries, from learning to ride, to marveling at the wonder of the newly connected electricity and telephone systems. Life was moving them on now, and while it was not difficult, he found that he missed her wide eyed wonder at the world around her when he was at University. Her turn will come, he thought.
The day passed like other days, meals, talking with each other, servants, the groundsmen. To Albert, these things were, well, bluntly, not like they used to be. He missed his fellow students, and was eager to get back to his studies. All the assignments he had at the end of Michaelmas were completed, and where he was a little short on information, he was able to purchase books for his home library. Father did not begrudge his spending of money for books. With the books he had borrowed from the Bodleian, he was sure to do well this coming term.
Night came, the house quietened as Winnie went to bed, then Albert. He read for a while, Charles Darwin was fascinating, and trying to follow the argument over the creation of the Earth was a complex labyrinth of outright and obvious falsehoods, to arcane mysteries, to obscure science. Albert knew it was science that would win in the end, just he hoped it was in his lifetime. Turning his electric lamp off, Albert went to sleep quickly.
A rush of emotions woke Albert, quickly, totally, his body shaking slightly. Albert thought it may have been a clap of thunder, or some other noise, but the house seemed quiet. Getting out of bed, he put his slippers on, a gown and went out of his room, into the hallway. There were some loose boards but Albert knew he could easily avoid them, he certainly didn't want to wake Mother, but Winnie wouldn't hear him moving around.
The hall was partly lit, unusual, thought Albert, then he noted that Mother hadn't shut the door of her bedroom, at the end of the corridor. Properly, he Ignored it, He went down stairs to get a drink, It was cool, but the cast iron stove, even banked, was enough to warm the kitchen, if not the house. He took a biscuit that Cook had made earlier today and sat with a cup of tea he had made. Finishing it, Albert made his way to the back, using the flushing toilet there, and after, went back to his room.
As he made his way to his room, he heard a voice, coming from mother's room. No, not a voice, but a sound, an ascending sound then a series of moans and a squeal. Albert rushed to his mother's room and pushed the door open, expecting to see his mother being assailed.
What he saw immobilized him. Miss Hargreaves was naked. On mother's big bed, on her back, her legs spread, with a very naked mother lying between those legs with her face buried into the junction of Miss Hargreaves' legs. Miss Hargreaves opened her eyes at Albert's intrusion and Mother, who must have heard him, jumped up, facing Albert.
Albert could not help but notice the curve of Mother's breasts, how they swayed with her movement. Her face was frozen in shock and horror. Miss Hargreaves looked at Albert, coolly saying, "You do understand it's rude to invade a woman's boudoir without invitation, Albert?"
Albert blinked, the tableau before him, overwhelming him. Two, not one, but two naked women, one his Mother! "Well, answer me!" Miss Hargreaves said in her normal demanding tutor voice.
Albert shook his head, swallowed, and replied, "Yes, Miss Hargreaves."
"Good, well come in, close the door behind you, we don't want your sister wakened!" She demanded. Without thinking, still shocked, Albert closed the door behind him and stepped further into the room. Albert was shivering, but not from cold, his stomach grew empty, shivering in excitement.
