My name is Rob Dennis, I am 20 yrs old and for the last 2 years have been trying to transform myself, from a fat 5ft 8in childish nerd into a fit mature young adult.
I still live at home with my parents Mike and Julia, they are both in their late 40's, they are fitness fanatics. It's easy to find out where they are. If their cars are in the driveway and they are not in the house, they are out running. If their cars aren't there, they are at the gym or swimming pool.
This is mostly my fault, they took up getting fit, to support me. I am no way as dedicated as they are, but I have toned up a lot quicker than they have.
It had never bothered me being fat at school, I wasn't ever bothered by bullies. Well one did try, but I got a weeks suspension for my actions. He was going to take my chocolate pudding, that just wasn't happening. He announced that a fat bastard like me didn't deserve a chocolate pudding and picked it up. I told him to put it back, he told me to fuck off, so one punch later, he was out cold on the floor with a broken bloody nose.
I had to thank grandad for the lesson, he showed me how to punch and to use my weight to my advantage. But mum wasn't at all pleased with me or her dad, my dad didn't help by laughing, he got one of her looks for his grave error.
After that nobody bothered me at school, not even the girls, their size didn't matter either, fat, thin, tall short, no one was interested in a nerd,
All that changed at University, to help pay for my time there, at 18 years of age I took a part time job. Who would have thought taking a job as a waiter, would put me on the path to getting fit.
The restaurant owner had been roped in to help host a sponsored slim, all to raise money for Cancer Research, they even convinced him to donate the top prize, a week at his holiday apartment in the Canary Islands. Although you did have to pay for your own flights etc. so it sounded good but still cost you.
I wasn't interested at first, mainly because everyone said I should do it, but then laughed and said I didn't have the will power, so I signed up and made them sponsor me, I didn't win but nearly a stone in 4 months, I looked and felt better so I carried on.
The transformation began that year, from a 5ft 8in 15 stone tub of lard with long brown hair, horn rimmed glasses, to present day still 5ft 8in there was nothing I could do about that. To a 12 stone muscle toned athlete, short cropped brown hair and now wearing contact lenses. Put two pictures of me next to each other and you might see some resemblance, but most people don't see it. I am literally a shadow of my former self.
The first thing I noticed was in my private life, I now had one. It was a lot easier getting dates, although much to the annoyance of Kate, I wouldn't go out with her on principal despite all her flirting. I had previously asked Kate one of the bar staff if she fancied going out with me, she turned me down flat saying she already had a boyfriend. I found out later that night, she didn't have a boyfriend, but had said that as she would rather become a nun than be seen out with a fat git like Bob.
In a bit of a screw you lady asked her mate Amy out, it didn't last that long but it was the lovely Amy who took my cherry. She had unleashed a monster, it was all I wanted, I was making up for lost time. Maybe I was being unreasonable or too demanding but in the end that is what ended a few budding relationships.
That eventually taught me a valuable lesson, it was not all about me getting my end away, I had been so selfish so a rethink happened.
Working as a waiter, you got to see quite a lot of young ladies out for a bit of fun.
If you are patient they ask you out, over the next few months I had a lot of one or two night stands. Sometimes it was physical and sometimes not, I just let them lead the way. I learnt how to please a girl and not just a quick wham bang and scram.
I turned up for work one Saturday night, the boss had sectioned off an area and told Kate and I to look after the hen night, that was due in for a meal at 8pm. They had already made life easy for us, by pre-ordering and paying for the food, this afternoon. It made it so easy, no starters, no sweets just main courses. All we had to do was serve it up, Talk about organised they had even sorted out the name tags by meals, we just had to put them on tables by the meals they had ordered. Mind you the drinks at these do's could always prove problematic, not tonight though, they had put a kitty behind the bar if it ran out, we had to tell them. It wasn't made easy to keep track of any of them, as they were all wearing nurses uniform and hen night sashes and kept changing places, I would get a drink order go and fill and by the time I got back, some had moved, so I just left them on the table. One blue eyed blonde had caught my eye, who I thought at first was following me about, she seemed to be everywhere. Until I saw her stood next to her double, these two were obviously identical twins.
I kept looking at them, trying to spot anything that you could use to tell them apart. This obviously hadn't gone unnoticed as the next lot of drinks I served, I heard one of the other girls say "I bet Jan gets served first," "no way" another said "it will be Jen." Trouble was I didn't know their names, so I served twin 1 who was nearest to me first then twin 2, much to the delight of her mates. "Told you it would be Jan, get the shots in" said the brunette.
Ok, so now I knew their names they were Jan and Jen but that didn't help me, I still couldn't tell the difference. By the end of the night for some reason I thought I fancied Jan more than Jen.
Kate and I were very happy with the Β£50 tip when they left, although I also got the bonus of a few kisses and hugs, all in all a great night. The rest of the night was back to the fairly quiet restaurant atmosphere we are used to. Luckily for me it was my turn to get away on time, Kate tried to persuade me to swap but I was having none of that, I was done in, I needed my bed. Plus I was working Sunday lunch she was off for 2 days.
I had checked the bookings for Sunday it was about the usual, quiet early and busy between 12.30 and 14,30. then quiet until the night, which I didn't care about I finished at 1800. Not too bad, a couple of beers in the bar after work and back home as I was at Uni the next day. Funny how the best laid plans start off crap and just get worse as the day goes on.
If there is a club for obnoxious diners they had all arranged to come in to Martinella's that Sunday.
Ok, the kitchen wasn't on top form, but just about every table ended up with something wrong. Luckily for me it was nothing to do with the way I had written it down. Things like no garlic bread with the lasagne, the sauce was supposed to be on the side, the sauce was cold, I asked for no onion in the side salad, an over cooked steak I asked for a medium to well done, this is medium. All annoying for the customer but they just over reacted it was an error yes, yes it shouldn't happen. I know I had to take the flak and to do the apologising, but there is no reason to get so snooty about it, be reasonable and speak normally don't shout at me. Even more so for the boss, who I had to bring out a few times, to say he wasn't happy is an understatement. He gave the chef a right dressing down, it wasn't the first time it had happened either, he was now on his last warning. There was no way Antony would still be working here by the end of the month.
I was all for walking straight out after my shift but the boss bought me a beer saying "he was sorry, I had to suffer for the kitchen's poor performance." It was a free beer so I stayed, one turned in to two as I had calmed down. I was sat at the end of the bar watching the comings and goings, when the twins came in with what I presumed was their mum and dad.
First, I was surprised they were back, the amount of booze they had consumed in here last night. I was certain they would have carried on to a club after leaving at 10.30, after a session like that I wouldn't have surfaced the next day.
The second surprise was when one of the twins walked over to me and said "hi Rob, we had a great time last night. As a personal thank you, do you want to come out tomorrow night with me."
[Me] "Yes, that would be great."
[Jan or Jen] "Meet here or in town say 7.30."
[Me] "What's best for you, err Jan."
[Jan] "Here is best, oh and good guess, See you tomorrow night."
