Party Planning

"Make sure that Ben can't see what's going on while I'm there. I don't want him watching or listening to us, it makes me feel icky. But...I don't mind if you do," Casey said with a wink and a smile.

"Don't worry, he's working all day and I'll delete the recordings once you leave," Alex said.

"Thanks," Casey said as she kissed him on the cheek and went up to her room to get ready.

Alex spent the next hour cleaning the house. It wasn't in that bad of shape, but it needed dusting and straightening up, and the downstairs bathrooms needed a polish. He made up the guest beds in case any of the girls stayed over. Then he went out to the backyard and arranged the patio and pool furniture so it was out of the way of the impending deliveries.

At eight o'clock Casey stuck her head out the sliding glass door and said "Bye, I'm going to Megan's. I'll see you at three, I can't wait!"

"See ya soon," Alex replied.

Alex busied himself for the next hour inflating and assembling the pool toys he bought the day before. Thankful he had an air compressor, he had built a small mountain of rafts, beach balls, and inner tubes in his garage in no time. He carried it all outside and left it in a pile in the grass, unable to set everything up until the pool company finished their work.

At exactly nine o'clock he heard a large truck pull into the driveway. He opened the door as Jenny was walking up the main pathway to the house. "Wait until you see the backyard," Alex replied. He took her through a tour of the downstairs, first noting the large foyer that opened to the living room. Furniture was placed tastefully around the broad room. There was an area for sitting and socializing, as well as a site dedicated to the TV and sofa. The kitchen and dining room were open, taking up a full quarter of the downstairs floor space. The kitchen was massive by normal standards, with a huge L-shaped island/bar combo that held a built-in sink. "There are two guest rooms back there, along with a shared bathroom," he said pointing down a hallway on the opposite side of the house. "And there's a small bathroom over there," he said, motioning to a nearby door that was easy to reach from the kitchen or living room. "Upstairs are two more bathrooms, four bedrooms, and my office," he added.

"Wow, and this is all yours? What about your parents?" she asked. "Sorry, I don't mean to pry," she added hastily, realizing that Alex was still very much a stranger.

"Oh, it's ok. Yes, this is my house. I bought it from my mom after my father passed away from cancer," he said.

"I'm sorry to hear that," Jenny said sympathetically.

"It's alright, thanks. He'd be happy knowing what we're doing today," he smiled. "I bought this place so my mom could have the freedom to do what she wanted after he passed. She never made a lot of money, but our family has owned this property since I was a baby. She's in Italy right now, hopefully having the time of her life."

"Wow, Alex, that's so generous of you. Do you live here by yourself?" she asked, feeling that his candid responses gave her approval to keep questioning.

"No, my younger sister Casey and older sister Lily live here. And my mom, when she's not traveling. I told you about Casey, she's just graduated high school, and Lily is a junior at Sanford State. Actually a senior now," he said, correcting himself. "Lily's gone for the weekend, so it's just me and Casey here now. I talked her into going to her friend's house so we could set up the surprise."

Jenny was once again amazed by the young man's poise and generosity. She had one last question that needed to be answered. The thick stack of twenties he handed her yesterday was not normal. Her natural pessimism made her think he was some kind of drug dealer or crook, but she wanted to believe otherwise.

"What do you do for a living? I've never met anyone as young as you who owns a place like this," Jenny asked, mentally crossing her fingers.

"I guess my official title these days is network security solutions architect," Alex said, knowing the mouthful meant nothing to Jenny. "I used to have my own company but I sold it after dad left us, that's how I could afford to buy this place. Right now I'm just consulting part-time. When there's a big problem nobody else can solve, they call me," Alex said, normally humble about his professional successes, but felt the need to impress the curious party planner.

Jenny was flabbergasted, she would have been far less surprised if he told her he was a bank robber. He had to be too young for all of that to be true. "Wow, that's quite a story. Do you mind if I ask how old you are?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.

Understanding her doubt, Alex launched into his life story. "I'll be twenty at the end of the summer. I graduated high school at fifteen owning half a dozen patents. You might say I was a bit of a nerd back then, and you'd be right," he said chuckling in self-deprecation. "I spent twelve hours a day working at my computer. High school was a joke for me. So I used all those patents and things I learned to start a company when I was sixteen. We built computer security systems for big companies. Stuff that kept hackers from doing bad things with people's information," he said, trying his best to explain it simply for her without sounding patronizing.

Jenny nodded in understanding and Alex continued, "I did most of the programming and managed the books. Then the business took off, I could hardly keep up. I was also going to college, but I didn't like it because I was so much younger than everyone else. Then I sold my company and dropped out of school a little over a year ago when my father passed away. I was proud of what I'd done and sad to see it go, but I had to take a break. It was a hard time. My family needed me, they still do. So now I try to use my money for things like this," Alex said as he spread his arms. "...to make my sisters and mom happy," he said, adding personal details to his story that he normally wouldn't mention to someone he'd just met. But he felt like Jenny needed to understand to trust him, and he was right.

"That's amazing Alex. I can honestly say I've never met anyone like you," Jenny said with admiration. His story was so extraordinary that it had to be true. And the way he talked was so real and heartfelt, it was the same vibe she got when they first met in her store yesterday.

"I'd like a chance to get to know you too, Jenny. Maybe we can get together next week? I know a great Italian place nearby," he said smiling.

"Gene's, I know it. He's such a sweetheart. I would love to go on a date with you, Alex." Jenny beamed and bounced cutely on her heels, hands clasped at her waist.

A date, Alex thought. He asked her out without even thinking about it! Carrie would be so proud. "Great, I'll give you a call tomorrow once the dust has settled. Let's head outside, we have work to do."

He showed her the expansive backyard, ringed with huge oak, walnut, and chestnut trees. The neighbors were far enough away that it was a very private area, it wasn't even fenced. "This is amazing," Jenny said. "You could have a wedding for 300 people out here. It's so peaceful and...intimate," she added, searching for the right word to describe it.

The patio and pool became the focus of their attention and Alex said, "I swim competitively, it helps balance out the amount of time I spend at my desk. I had this pool put in last fall so I could train more often. I'd hoped it would cheer up my mom and sisters too, but they haven't used it much except to tan. That's partly why I wanted to have this party for Casey," he explained. "I want this to be a fun place for them, too."

"I have a truckload of stuff that should help with that," she said, smiling at the strikingly thoughtful young man. "And it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day for a pool party," she said. And it was, early clouds rolled out to reveal a bright blue sky. The temperature climbed past 70 degrees by mid-morning; it was going to be properly hot by the afternoon.

"Alright then, I'll leave you to it. The pool guys are coming in a half hour to install a few things and clean the pool, so I'd start inside until they're done. The food will be here around one o'clock and I told Casey to come at three," he said, confirming the timeline with Jenny.

"Sounds good. I have a couple guys along to help with the heavy lifting, Randy and George. I'll introduce you once they're done unloading the truck," Jenny said. "I also have a couple more deliveries coming, lights for the pool, and a few extras I didn't have in stock."

"Thanks so much for doing this. I bet you were up half the night, you look tired," Alex said sympathetically. He was already admiring how much work she had done for him on short notice.

"I was, but it's going to be worth it," she said, smiling with renewed excitement at the chance to impress Alex. It wasn't just because she was starting to like him, his property was a serious business opportunity. She was constantly searching for venues like this to host parties. "Oh, I almost forgot," she said as he was turning away. "What are the other girls' names? I want to personalize as many things as I can."

"Megan, Brittany, and Sonya," Alex replied.

"Got it, thanks," Jenny said and then busied herself laying out party supplies. She had boxes of balloons, streamers, banners, ornaments, garlands, ribbons and small party favors. Piles of serving platters, tableware, candles, gift bags, and candies were spread across the living room floor. It looked like her store exploded all over Alex's house. Jenny had brought nearly a third of her inventory, not knowing entirely what to expect and not having the time to plan property. She was glad she did. She wanted her work to reflect Alex's generosity. And that meant she was going to be very busy for the next five hours.

Alex heard the beeping of a large truck backing into the driveway while he admired Jenny's methodical approach to her preparations. He met the driver and his team outside and directed them to the path around the house to the pool. For the next two hours, he helped a couple of husky gentlemen install the massive slide and shade covers. Casey wasn't mad or even jealous of her brother and Megan if anything it made her excited. But she didn't like them talking about things she'd said in confidence. Devising a way to teach her friend a little lesson, she set the trip. "What kind of stuff? Alex didn't really tell me anything."

"Well, he wanted me to try on my new swimsuit. I was nervous it might show too much and he said he'd give me his opinion."

"So it was his idea for you to try on the suit? Not yours?" Megan asked, knowing the answer.

"Yeah, that's right. I mean I wanted to anyway. I...I...really like Alex," she stammered. "I hope that doesn't make things weird between us."

"Oh no Meg, don't worry, I'm happy you two were together," Casey said honestly. "So what did you do, I want all the details," Casey said intently, knowing Megan wouldn't give them to her, not all of them at least.

"He really liked the suit. Like, really liked it. I could tell by his...you know," Megan said while Casey nodded in understanding. "So I told him he could take off his clothes if he wanted, and he took almost everything off. And then...then I sorta rubbed against him. I sat on his leg, and he bounced me, and it felt so good." I know you made him happy and that's what I care about most," Casey said earnestly, and then reached out and hugged her friend.
