************
As I laid in bed, I still couldn't believe it. The events were still spinning in my head, making it very hard to fall asleep, as I kept remembering everything that'd happened between Mary and me. In the end, I was so exhausted because of what we did, I fell asleep and didn't awake until noon, the next day.
After I finally woke, I went into the bathroom to shower, clean-up and get dressed before going downstairs to get something to eat, but for some reason, there wasn't anyone home. I went into the kitchen, glanced towards the counter and saw a piece of paper left there with a note. It was from my mom, 'Sweetie, your dad and I went shopping, then we plan to go to the movies, so get yourself something to eat and enjoy your day. We'll be back later.'
I was annoyed because I wanted to ask my mom to make me Mac 'n' Cheese, her's is the best I've ever tried. I wasn't in the mood to eat cereal at that time of the day so I thought I'd go out and get something to eat, but before going, I went to the living room and sat on the couch. I started to smile as I remembered the events of last night, again. It was still hard to believe, but I knew it wasn't a dream and I was very happy about it.
I took my phone from my pocket, turned on the screen and thought, 'I should call Mary' so I did. I had her number in my my starred contacts so I only had to click her name as soon as I hit the phone app. I did and her phone started to ring. I was very excited to talk to her, but sadly, she didn't answer my call.
Ten minutes went by and I thought, 'Maybe she can't take the call. I'll try a text message.' I clicked on my WhatsApp shortcut and found her conversation, then I texted, 'Hi, Mary, how are you?' Again, I didn't get any response and I started to get frustrated because she wouldn't answer. When I left, last night, she didn't seem upset with me. I waited for another fifteen minutes as I sat on the couch, still remembering the events of last night. Then my phone vibrated...it was Mary!
Mary: I can't talk right now.
Rick: What? Why? Is something wrong?
Mary: I just can't. Don't push it, please? We'll talk later.
Rick: OK.
I was confused! Why would she sound so annoyed with me? That's never happened before. Seeing her response, I knew there was no point in continuing to try talking to her, so I did as she asked and stopped. I grabbed my car keys and went out for food. It was a sunny and hot afternoon. My car's air conditioner worked perfectly, but though it was set as cold as possible, the cool air inside the car didn't feel as cold as usual.
I felt like going to KFC. I wanted something quick and nice so I drove to the closest one, parked the car, got out and walked into the KFC. There weren't a lot of people in it and I was glad because I wasn't going to have to wait too long before I could finally eat.
When it was my turn to order, I asked for a three piece combo with Mac 'n' Cheese and a coke. Their Mac 'n' Cheese isn't as good as my mother's, but it was better than no Mac 'n' Cheese at all. Finally, my food was ready and I took it to a table. I was so hungry, I started eating my food, fast. The Mac 'n' Cheese was very good that afternoon. Then something I wasn't expecting, at all, happened. Mary texted me, again!
Mary: Rick, I'm sorry. I couldn't talk. Are you busy, right now?
Rick: It's OK. I'm at KFC getting something to eat. I think Mom and Dad went out on a date and I had to eat something. I was starving.
Honestly, I didn't know what was going on but I tried to keep my cool by not pushing for answers. If there's anything I hate, it's when girls become moody, for whatever reason, and then they want you to pay for it. So, I thought it'd be better to let her talk when, and if, she wanted. If not, I wasn't going to bug her. I wanted to see if she wanted to talk about or tell me how she felt about last night.
I wanted her to start seeing me as more than her nephew. I knew it was going to take some time, but I was willing to wait because Mary was worth the effort and the waiting. She was the girl of my dreams and I was going to do whatever I could to make sure I had her with me in the end. She continued texting me.
Mary: Well, that's cute. I mean your parents...you know, going on a date after so many years of marriage.
Rick: Yeah, I'm happy they still love each other so much. Sometimes, they act as teenagers. As if they're kids that have recently fallen in love with each other. I hope they continued like that forever because they make each other happy and that makes me happy.
Mary: Yeah, I understand why you feel that way.
We were making small talk and I started to enjoy my food, properly. I was eating it way too fast before she started texting me. I'd started taking my time and I wanted to see where our conversation was going.
Rick: So, how are you?
Mary: I'm not in the best mood and I'm upset because I let you have it when you didn't do anything wrong, so I wanted to let you know I'm sorry.
Rick: It's OK. Don't worry, we all have bad moments.
I wanted her to talk to me about last night but she was completely avoiding it so I decided to encourage it.
Rick: That doesn't apply to last night at all.
Mary: You couldn't resist, could you?
Ricky: Resist what?
Mary: Bringing it up.
Rick: I'm not going to apologize for enjoying the best evening of my entire life with the woman I love.
She stopped texting for a few minutes, which gave me time to finish my food. I thought, 'Maybe she's upset about what I wrote', but I was going for broke. All or nothing. I finished my food, grabbed a refill of coke and walked out to my car. Before I got in, my phone vibrated, again. I knew it was her!
Mary: I'm confused. I don't regret what we did, but...maybe we should talk. Can you come to my house?
Rick: Mary, I'd go to the end of the world for you. I know something's wrong and you're not telling me about it. I'm leaving KFC and coming to your house. I'll be there in ten minutes.
Mary: OK, and Rick...thank you for always being so nice to me.
Rick: You don't have to thank me. I couldn't treat you any other way.
She stopped texting me. I was disappointed because I was expecting, at least, one more text from her after what I'd texted her, but with girls, it's like that, sometimes, so I put my phone in my pocket and drove towards Mary's place. Less than ten minutes later, I arrived at my destination, parked the car and walked into Mary's house, as I usually did. Mary was sitting in the living room, the TV was off and she was enjoying a cup of coffee.
"Hi, Mary," I said as I walked into the living room.
She looked at me and I noticed her eyes were a little reddish, as if she'd been crying. She continued sipping her coffee as I walked towards the couch and sat next to her, on her left side. I didn't try to make any moves, I only sat close to her and looked at her, giving her time to talk.
"I'm sorry for being a bitch to you. You didn't deserve it."
She ran the palm of her left hand over my cheek a few times and I completely melted, but I was trying to keep my game face on. As she was looking at me, I held her hand with my right hand, gave its palm a soft and slow kiss then I let go of her.
