Foreword.
This is the story of a very intelligent young man who at seventeen has A grades in every subject he's taken, there's not a university that wouldn't take him. The problem was, Barry didn't want to go to university. He wanted to be a diamond trader as it was a profitable business and there weren't many diamond traders around and those that were, were mostly Jewish.
Barry lived with his mum Babs on the west coast of the north of England. The area had some of the best race horse trainers based there. Babs's father had been a Maths teacher, in his mid-twenties he had set up a bookmaking business. He was very successful by the age of forty. He had over forty branches.
Babs was a single parent. Barry resulted from an evening of too much Champagne after a successful day at the races with a married man that Babs found attractive. Babs was eighteen when this happened and was now a very attractive, voluptuous thirty-five-year-old woman.
Three months before he died, Babs' father had sold his sixty-five branches to a national bookmaking company. Babs was in a very secure financial position. Horse racing had been her life, she still studied the Racing Post every morning and still made money on her horse racing betting.
Present Day.
Barry and Babs spoke often about diamond trading as Barry had approached several companies and had only one negative reply. Things changed on Monday morning at seven-fifteen when Babs handed Barry this morning's Racing Post, "Darling, please read this, then try to contact Sir Percy Goldman at his diamond trading company."
I read the article Sir Percy's horses had won three races at Saturday's meeting at Cheltenham, which was quite an achievement. He loved horse racing and owned over forty horses, all trained in an area around where he lived. Sir Percy also owned Goldman Jewellery, a company with over ninety branches.
He was a multimillionaire, but in the article, he said all his success came from his diamond trading, as he was the one that put the quality diamonds into his jewellery shops. When I read it, I knew mum was right, this was the man I needed to contact.
I got on to Google and found Goldman Diamond Traders in a town thirty minutes from me. At ten to eight, I'd emailed info at Goldman Diamond Traders marked for the attention of Sir Percy Goldman.
I attached a copy of the exam grades and explained I didn't want to go to university. I wanted to train as a diamond trader. After I had researched the history of De beers and Goldman Diamond Traders and Goldman consistently had higher quality stones in their shops. I asked if he could give me any advice on how I could proceed, I would be very grateful, I also gave him my mobile number.
At ten past eight my mobile rang, I didn't recognise the number, but it was a mobile number, "Parker, can I help you?"
"Barry Parker, this is Percy Goldman. I've read your email and I'm interested in meeting you. Do you drive? And where do you live?"
I was amazed when he phoned and said, "Sir, thank you so much for calling me." I sit my driving test a week today at nine in the morning. I live in Southport."
"Barry, are you free today?"
"I am, sir."
"Good, please give me your address and there will be a car with you in thirty minutes."
I gave him my address, and he told me he was looking forward to meeting me. I told mum who was so happy with what was happening. She told me to put on my best suit and be ready when the car came.
A Jaguar pulled into our driveway, and I sat in the front with the driver. We talked about the weather and the football results from Saturday. We arrived at quite a sizeable property, which from the outside looked normal but from inside the security was incredible. Eventually, the driver led me to Percy's office on the top floor. Pictures of race horses covered the walls. The office also had a winter garden attached to it, there were also a desk and chairs there too.
Percy was a man who looked as though he was in his mid-sixties stood up from his office desk and gave me a firm handshake, as he shook my hand, he said, "I'm pleased to meet you, Barry, do you smoke?"
"No sir, I don't."
"Good, never start. Unfortunately, I'm a heavy smoker, so let's go into the smoking office."
We then went into the winter garden, where he lit a cigarette. We chatted there for over three hours, talking about different aspects of diamond trading. I had been researching diamond trading for at least three years and had a good grasp of how it worked.
Percy invited me for lunch in the works canteen. There were over two hundred people working there. After lunch, he showed me around. It was so impressive the design department. Making moulds to cast for rings. I didn't know how many diamonds he had in stock, but it was a lot. Every diamond there Percy had bought.
