"Hey, sis, happy birthday! How are you? Have an amazing day today."
It was an innocent enough message I've sent to my sister on her 40th birthday. If I could, I would have gone to her house and surprise her, but being in the UK and Greta living in Belgium still, there wasn't much I could do.
I've been a couple of years in the UK, and did my best to keep in touch with my sister and my brother, but the distance doesn't always make it easy. We do our best to have calls, but all to often our busy lives just took the time away from quality calling time. The advent of video calling through WhatsApp was a poor replacement of in person communciation, even though it always put a smile on my face.
My sister is a couple of years younger than me, the second child. We always agreed well, when we were younger. We teased each other a lot, or just experiment with kissing in a swimming pool under water, but nothing too forthcoming. If I would describe my sister now, I would start with her great personality, though with an edge. She has a fantastic body, being an avid horse driver definitely keeps the abs well toned, and with firm buttocks. Mother nature also blessed her with an amazing rack, one that I've admired ever since I've developed interest in women, but I never persued it. Sure, I tried to sneak a peek when we were younger, but what young man hasn't had those urges when they were younger. We always had a great time together, and we bounced off each other when we could.
"Hey, Brad! Thanks, not doing so great, though, can we have a call tonight?" She replied.
"Sure, I'll be available at 18h your time!"
Time differences, always such a joy, to often we missed a call because we mixed up the time difference...
I went back to work, working from home as a graphic designer, I had quite some freedom, but today was a busy day, struggling with customer demands on a recently finished project. Didn't have that much time at all, but I made sure I block my calendar around that time, somehow angry customers always feel I should be available non-stop.
"Hey Greta, how you doing?" I asked as the call came in.
"Hey Brad, not too great. Don't really know where to start..." She stared back, her mind obviously wandering.
"Don't give me that, sis, I can see you've been crying today! Tell me, what's on your mind?"
"I really don't know where to start, Brad, you've known now that me and Grant were having a bit of hard time lately, but... but I really don't know what's happening with him lately!" She managed to stutter back.
"What are you saying, Greta? Something going on with you and Grant, you've been doing so great with counseling, and taking care of your daughters."
"I know, but Grant and me had a big fight," She wept, "yesterday during the counseling on how he takes me for granted, and I don't know, it shouldn't be this hard for us to bring back the bond we had some years ago."
Grant was a great guy, he had about 10 years on Greta when they've met, and she started to have feelings for him during her university years. He was equine coach at the equistrian center we frequented. They started dating a couple of years after, and they made a fantastic live together, with 2 wonderful daughters. But Grant had an accident last year, during tree cutting, that left him with a limp. Since then, Greta described it as him having his shields raised. She had grown weary of his defensive posturing, and they've been seeking some couples counseling to cut through the shield for the past 6 months.
"I'm sorry to hear that, Greta. Is there anything I can do?" I asked.
"Well, school term is coming up and I need a bit of a breather, you think Chrissy would mind if I come over for the school term?"
Chrissy, my better half and Greta weren't the best of friends, to say the least. I like to say they tolerated each other and grown closer over the years, but truth be told, if I would be leaving them in the same room and make a coffee or so, it would either be very silent in the room, or very loud.
"Sure, I don't think she would mind at all..." I said.
"Don't kid with me, you know we don't always agree very well." She shot back.
"...because she will be in Kroatia for the school term, with Dan." I said.
Dan, the best thing Chrissy and I ever did, an amazing little boy with tons of energy. The life of the party, but both of us working and away from our home countries, school terms were a bitch. We just managed, by going to either of our families (though mostly Chrissy's) during the school terms. Home office does have it's advantage.
"Oh, you ain't going along this time?" Greta asked.
"No. They are coming to paint to living room, and we are having some work done on the heating. So gotta stay and check up on them!" I smiled.
"Well, if you don't mind it Brad, can I come over that week?" Greta asked again.
"Sure, tell me when and where I should pick you up!"
"Thanks, you're the best. I'll send you the details after I've booked."
We chatted a bit more and then agreed we'd see each other at halfterm.
"Hey Brad, I'll be arriving in Manchester at 14h in the afternoon on Saturday." My sister wrote. "I can take an Uber to your place, if you like?"
"Hi Greta, no, that's fine, Chrissy is leaving at 15h from the airport, so I can stay around and take you home with me!"
"If it's not too much trouble, that sounds great!"
On Saturday, I set off to the airport, to bring Dan and Chrissy. After a lengthy goodbye at the airport, my heart always breaks a little if I can't go along with them, I've looked for a place to have some lunch. The Burger King looked inviting, but there were just too many people. So, I strolled past the shops and settled on some asian food. As I ate my lunch, I noticed the plane my sister was on was in a slight delay, so I grabbed a coffee from Star Bucks and went out for a vape.
"I've landed, just gotta go through border control!" Greta wrote.
"Great, I'll get to the arrival gate, see you there :)"
As I passed a shop, I saw they sold some flowers, and I thought, why not brighten her day a little. I picked up a nice bouquet and stood outside the arrival gate.
"Brad!" Greta waved, giving me a big smile, and coming in for a hug.
"It's good to see you again, it's been what, almost half a year?" She said, as we gave each other a tight cuddle.
"It's great to see you as well, sis! Got you some flowers." I said.
"Oh thanks, they are lovely. Could have gotten me some chocolate instead, but I appreciate the sentiment! Have you been working out, you look fitter than last I saw you!" She asked.
"Yeah, I've been back running the past couple of months. After my ankle injury, which drove me bonkers, it was really good to get back to running. Might have overdone it a bit, though!" I smiled, "Thanks for noticing! And you look great too!" I said.
"Really? It's nice to get a compliment. Grant hasn't been paying that much attention to me lately, so I've been working hard in the gym!" Greta beamed. "It's nice of you to notice."
I blushed a bit at that comment. As we walked and talked to the car, Greta filled me in on what's been bugging her lately.
"You know, it wasn't easy getting out for a week. But I really needed some space." She admitted, "Since Grant had his injury, he has had his shield up around me all the time."
"Why is that?" I queried.
"Well, the counsiler thinks it might be because he feels I might not find him attractive anymore with his limp," She said, "but I haven't felt that way. It feels like he is pushing me away, and it's hard getting him to notice me."
"I can't really believe that," I stated, "look at how great you look! Those workout definitely pay dividents!"
"Oh so cute, thanks, I think I'm not doing to bad for an old gal!"
"You ain't old, you're younger than me, and I still feel in the prime of my life!" I joked back. "Well, except after Monday footy, that is!"
It's incredible how easy our conversation was flowing everytime we are together. We laughed and joked towards the car. As I got my card out to pay for the parking ticket, she jumped in and payed the ticket.
"The least I can do for my knight in shining armour!", she laughed, "Lets get to your place, I'm a bit weary from the trip!"
We drove to my place, and she settled in, taking the spare bedroom.
"Hi darling, did your sister arrive safely? Are you home already? We've landed 10 minutes ago, and my sister is around to pick us up!" Chrissy wrote.
