It was all Jimmy's fault. At least, that's what I told myself. In reality, a lot of dominoes had to line up juuuuust right for things to happen the way they did, but the one that REALLY set things in motion was Jimmy needing more overtime at work. If he hadn't asked to cover for me so he could pick up more hours, then things between me and my sister, Rachel, probably would have turned out very differently. Then again, maybe they would have turned out exactly the same way. I've thought a lot about all those events that had to happen in just the right way at just the right time for things to happen the way they did. The more I think about it, the more that sequence of events seems less like coincidence and more like fate. And if it was fate, then it wouldn't have mattered if I had told Jimmy "no" that night, something else would have happened, and everything would have played out exactly the same. I guess it doesn't matter to think about the what-ifs because Jimmy DID ask to cover for me so I DID end up....
But I'm getting ahead of myself. The first domino in the line wasn't Jimmy, it was a phone call from my sister.
"Hey sis! To what do I owe the pleasure of this call?" I asked. My sister and I were fairly close but we hadn't talked in a while. She was part of a really competitive art program in her college and between that and her part time job, she just didn't have a lot of time to call her big brother.
"Hey bro, just calling cause I miss you. We haven't had a chance to talk for a while." I could hear something off in her voice.
"Ok, out with it. Something's wrong. I can hear it in your voice. What's going on?"
I heard my sister take a deep breath. "Ok. You got me. I have a huuuuuuge favor to ask, and it is totally fine to say no because it's a really REALLY big one."
"Shoot. Whatever you need I got you sis."
"Don't say that yet." She took another deep breath and continued. "So you know how my roommate, Jenny, told me the other day she's moving out in a couple of weeks? Well I figured I had enough in savings that I'd be fine for a couple of months while I found a new roommate but a couple of days ago the bar I'm working at shut down. Now I don't think I'll be able to afford to stay in my place."
"Awww Rach, that's terrible. Are you ok?"
"Well, that kind of brings me to the favor, and remember you are allowed to say 'no'." A third deep breath. "Can I stay with you for a while until I get another job and find a new place?"
I laughed. Rachel sighed.
"It's ok." She said, sounding dejected. "I figured you'd say no..."
I laughed again. "Rachel, are you crazy? Of course you can stay with me! You didn't even have to ask!"
"OH MY GOD!! ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!"
"No problem Rach; it's not like I'm gonna let my baby sister just get kicked out into the streets. You can stay as long as you need. Now what's going on with your job?"
Rachel told me about how the owner of the bar she worked at was way, way past due on taxes and none of the employees found out until they showed up for work the other day to find the doors chained shut and a bunch of notices taped up from all kinds of federal, state and local agencies. She later found out that, in addition to his wife and kids, the owner also had two other mistresses, one of whom was a manager at his bar. Between his family, his other women, and a wicked coke habit, there was nothing left for taxes.
"And it couldn't have come at a worse time!! Between this and Jenny leaving me high and dry and all the stress from school, I thought I was going to have some kind of breakdown, you know, just go nuts." Rachel told me.
"Well you don't have far to go there!" I teased.
"Hardy har har. Are these the kinds of lame jokes I'm going to have to put up with when I move in?"
"Actually I have mucher lamer jokes. I can give you a preview if you like.."
"Ugggh. On that note I have a TON of work to do."
"Suuuure you do. You just can't stand talking to your lame older brother anymore."
"Emphasis on OLD!!" She said, laughing. "Seriously though bro, I do have a ton of stuff to do. Especially now that I know I have to pack!! YAY!!"
"Yeah I know. Go express your artistic genius."
"I can't thank you enough Scott. You're really saving my butt. I'd kiss you if I could."
"And cover me with your cooties? GROSS." I said and hung up.
A lot of guys might have dreaded having their baby sister move in with them but for me it wasn't a problem at all. Rachel and I had always gotten along great, despite our age difference; she was 18 and I was 24. We had similar tastes in music and movies, and both had the same goofy sense of humor. The only real difference between us was that she was an absolute creative genius. Rachel was an amazing visual artist, a talent that was incomprehensible to me. If I tried hard, I might be able to draw a stick figure. To me, Rachel had always been cool beyond her years.
I also wasn't worried about her taking up too much space. Even though I lived alone, I had a two bedroom apartment. A couple of years ago I'd had a roommate, but shortly before he'd let me know he was moving out, I'd gotten a much better job at the local hospital. I found that I really enjoyed living alone and with my newly increased income, I was able to afford it. I'd been using my roommate's old room mostly for storage, essentially a super large closet. I'd easily be able to clean it out so that Rachel could use it.
----------
"So are you ready to move in?" I asked. My sister and I were having a rare lunch together.
"Mostly. You ready for a roomie?" Rachel replied.
I smiled. "Mostly. Still have to clean some stuff out of your new room. I've been super busy at work so I'm not as far into it as I'd like to be."
"Well I'm supposed to move in on Friday, how about I come over Thursday night and help you get the room ready? I can stay over and we can drive out to pick up my stuff Friday morning."
I thought about it for a second.
"That's actually a pretty good plan." I confessed.
"Of course it is. I thought of it, didn't I?" Rachel said.
We both laughed. It was really great hanging out with Rachel. Our hectic schedules meant that we weren't able to spend time together like this very often.
"Are you sure you don't mind me staying with you?" Rachel asked, her face suddenly serious.
I laughed again. "A bit late for second thoughts isn't it?" I said. "But no. I'm actually looking forward to it. I've missed you believe it or not."
"Awwwwwwww. You love me!!" Rachel said with exaggerated sappiness.
"Ewwwwww gross."
"It's no use denying it! You loooooooooove me!!!" Rachel said and jumped around our table to smother my cheek with sloppy kisses. I tried to fight her off, laughing so hard it hurt.
"Ok, ok, get off me you weirdo!!" I said, finally able to push her away. "You're making a scene!"
"Pssh. You're the one who made the scene by living in denial." My sister said as she sat down.
We continued our lunch, one of the most enjoyable meals I'd had in a long, long time. When we were done I was genuinely a little sad that it had to end.
"This has been really great Rach, I'm glad we were able to do this." I said giving her a big hug.
"Definitely! Thanks Scott, you're the best brother ever!" She said, squeezing me a little tighter. We broke our hug and waved goodbye.
