Part 03: Graduation
Jenny and Ann get with Jason's family.
*
My last final was completed on Thursday; but I was remaining in Barstoll for the weekend. Jason and Ann were graduating on Saturday and both sets of parents would be there as well and Jason's brother and sister. It was about four-thirty on Friday when I saw daddy's car pull into the driveway. I ran outside to meet them. As I walked toward the front door with them I commented, "Mom, you're finally going to get to see our house."
She replied, "It hasn't been that long ago. I still remember what fraternity and sorority houses and student apartments look like."
"This is better than those other places. This is a home."
"That's what those guys in the fraternities used to tell us when they were trying to lure us into their bedrooms."
Mom walked through the house and had a surprised look on her face. The kitchen was the last room that she entered. She was shocked when she looked in the refrigerator and found that there was actually food in it. There was a good supply of beer and soft drinks; but it was obvious that actual meals were cooked in the house. She remarked, "It really is a home. I am a little surprised. I expected it to be more like a miniature sorority house. This is a place where you guys can actually take your mother."
"Mom, you're the only mother who hasn't been here a couple of times. Valerie's mother was even here."
"Speaking of Valerie, how are your plans coming to get her to move in here?"
"Oh, she's coming for sure in the fall."
"Whew, I find it hard to believe that Mr. and Mrs. Sanders would agree to let her live here with Donnie."
"They finally came to the realization that they won't be doing any more with Valerie living here than they would if she was in the dorm and Donnie brought her over here. Of course, Mrs. Sanders knows what they are doing. Mr. Sanders is either delusioned that his daughter is still a virgin or he chooses to keep his head in the sand."
"Honey, I really like the way you have your house done. Not many people can furnish a house for what you guys did. Your father talked about us visiting a couple of times; but I backed off for fear of what I would find. Now, I wish that I had come earlier."
"Today is an unusual Friday though. At this time of night on Friday, there are usually several naked bodies moving about trying to get ready for date."
About that time, Mia came out of her bedroom and I introduced her to mom. Mom walked over to Mia and gave her a hug, saying, "You are every bit as beautiful as my daughters said that you were. They have told me so much about you and yet so little."
"Isn't that a contradiction?"
"Yes it is. Ann talked about you all of the time the last two years and Jenny is constantly talking about you. I know when you've had a bad test for Christ's sake. When they talked about getting the house and said that you were going to be one of the housemates, I asked how many guys you would be bringing in and they laughed at me. That was when they said that you were gay. I operated under that assumption all year until just before the spring semester when Jenny was talking about everyone else was sleeping with more men than she was. I asked her if she meant except Mia and she said that you'd found out last fall how much you like men."
Mia had a look of bewilderment on her face, as she said, "Well, now I understand why Ann and Jenny are so open when it comes to talking about sex.
Mom shook her head and said, "Normally, I'm not so bold with someone that I have just met and I definitely don't babble like I am now; but the excitement of Ann graduating tomorrow has me babbling a little bit. Are you going to dinner with us tonight, Mia?"
Mia responded, "I'd love to; but I can't. I have a date tonight. I'll be at the graduation tomorrow though. As many good and bad times as Ann and I have shared over the past two years, I wouldn't miss it."
The conversation was cut short by the sound of the doorbell. Chad was at the door and Mia quickly left with him. I had actually gotten to see him for about the second time; but I still had not heard him speak more than two words at once.
While we were inside, daddy had been outside looking over the yard and the outside of the house. When he came inside, he commented that the house was looking in pretty good shape and then he asked who was going to take care of the lawn during the summer. He was pleased to learn that Mia was willing to keep it mowed using the power mower that was in the garage. That was another thing that I had bought the previous fall against the wishes of Ann.
As daddy saw Ann and Jason drive up he suggested, "We had better get moving. We're supposed to meet the Madsens at the restaurant in about fifteen minutes. I wasn't sure how many people were coming so I made reservations for twelve."
Daddy thought that we could all ride to the restaurant together; but I told him that when we finished eating that we would probably be going in three different directions. He agreed that I was probably right and we took three cars. The Madsens were just getting out of their car when we pulled into the restaurant's parking lot. Kathy and I embraced each other and then Jason introduced me to his older brother Brock. No one would have had to have told me that Brock was Jason's brother. Other than the fact that Brock's hairline was receding slightly, they could have been twins.
