Part 4
"The waitress was so confused," I said as we walked across the windy parking lot towards my car.
"Yeah? About what?" Marissa asked sarcastically under one arm while Nev let out a little titter from under the other.
"That was... Oh my god!" I couldn't tell if it was way out of Nev's comfort zone or if she was actually delighted by the open threeway relationship meal we'd just had.
"Nev... I totally agree. That was pretty dumb." It was too, it was Marissa who had taken my hand, her who had kissed me in the middle of the restaurant but after that I'd gone with it just as much. Because it had been so freeing! Kissing one of the women I loved right where everyone could see. A woman who was my sister. "Dumb and..."
"And fun." Nev whispered.
"Mostly fun." Marissa gave my side a pinch as she said it, paying me back for the dumb comment. "What's the point of coming all the way to the other side of Willow Rapids for our big tenth date if we're just gonna be all low-key still?"
"There would be no point, you're right." I agreed.
"Wow!"
"What?" Thinking Marissa thought I was being sarcastic.
"If I had a ring I'd marry you." She said, blinking and shaking her head as if stunned. "A guy who admits when he's wrong."
"I... I think he'd be a good husband to... To us." Nev ventured timidly, then absently asking, "For us?" Shaking her head that she didn't actually want the answer. "Mom was really impressed with you."
"I can't believe she asked about the waiting." Marissa hadn't been there but she'd heard, shaking her head.
"I knew she would," My girlfriend frowning apologetically.
"I impressed her?" I asked, we'd had a talk about it after, mostly her apologizing for her mom, but she hadn't mentioned her mom's impression of me since.
"Yeah, she said you were really handsome." Pause to let that sink in, one corner of her mouth up in a proud smirk. "Polite and she really liked that you knew about her records or whatever."
"Yeah, our Uncle loved the Talking Heads and got me into them." Taking my arm from Nev and then Marissa as I fished out my keys to unlock the doors.
"Yeah," Not bothered by the repeated fact, that I'd only repeated so Marissa was in the loop.
"So... Does she know about this being your... Tenth date?" Marissa asked, after we all got in, I don't know if she was being polite herself or just instinct now that when we all went around together (usually around home) that she got in the back and let Nev, who was supposed to be my girlfriend, have the front. "Does she know..." Licking her lips before going forward. "That you're losing your virginity tonight?"
"Oh... I... Mayb... Yes." It was clear she'd intended to lie, or maybe fudge over the truth, but her conscience got the best of her.
"Wow. We'll see how much she likes you the next time you see her Foster." Punching me in the shoulder from the back, grinning wickedly like she could already see how much I'd be glared at and hated.
"No, it's okay." Nev sweetly reaching over for my hand with both hers. I was about to pull out of the parking lot so we had a moment to meet eyes, she really did think it was okay. That her mom wouldn't hate me for despoiling her daughter. Nodding, smiling, "She knows you're the one."
"The one?" Marissa of course had to ask, teasing not (exactly) jealous.
"Yeah, the... The One, right?" Needing to hear.
"Yeah, I... I really couldn't see my life without either of you." I knew if there was a
ONE
it was Marissa but with Nev in the picture it all just worked, the cover and... everything.
"Yeah." Nev agreed, turned enough in her seat to look from me to my sister.
"This is the happiest I've ever been." Marissa said in a monotone but also it was truly what she felt, but she had to tease about how 'emotional' this moment was getting.
"Me too." Nev instantly agreed, I might have thought she didn't get Marissa's sarcasm but I think she saw (or heard) what I had. There was a stretch of happy silence before the pretty blonde whispered, "Maybe we just head to the hotel?"
"I'm with Nev!"
"What? Really. There..." It had been more than dinner and a hotel but I saw both of them were eager for this, "You two would have been happy just going to the hotel, wouldn't you?"
