Note to reader - This story will take a couple of chapters. It's all about the buildup :)
I'm not sure where to start so I'll start at the beginning.
The beginning being my daughter Nicole's college graduation ceremony. It was in Florida and I flew down to be there for her. Her mother and I are separated and she's a surgeon with a full plate. One of us had to be there for Nicole's big day.
When I stepped out of the terminal the humidity hit me like a damp blanket. I was overdressed and immediately stepped into the cool air of a small clothes shop to buy something more appropriate. I was in the changing room when Nicole called.
"Hey dad! Where are you?"
I looked in the changing room mirror, a little ashamed at how I was no longer the young man I used to be. I still kept in shape but the days of marathons were behind me.
"I'm here, sweetheart. Just got off the plane and getting some shorts. Maybe a swimsuit."
"Which hotel are you at?"
I told her and she whistled. "Ooooo. Fancy. Wanna meet up for dinner."
I told her that would be perfect, finished with my purchases, and caught an Uber to the hotel. I had a couple of hours to kill so I checked out the hotel's layout, found the indoor and outdoor pools, and the small gym. The graduation ceremony was the next day so I'd have most of the morning to myself before having to get to it.
Nicole texted to tell me we could eat at the hotel's restaurant, but that the next night we would eat somewhere a little fancier. I have to admit I was a little surprised that she'd want to spend her graduation night with me instead of her friends but I wasn't going to complain. It would be nice to catch up with her.
I dressed and made my way to the restaurant on the rooftop a few minutes before Nicole was supposed to show up. I ordered a martini, and watched the entrance for when she arrived.
I didn't expect what happened next.
When the young woman entered the restaurant she immediately caught my eye. She wore a light blue sundress and, when the breeze caught her dirty blonde hair, it rose up to cover her face. God to be young again.
And then the beautiful young woman who'd just caught my eye waved. At me.
It was Nicole.
How could this be her? When did she grow up to be so...
