When he finally reached home, almost two hours later, Kieran saw his car was already parked in the driveway. He made his way to the front door and into the house. It was completely dark and empty downstairs. It was likely that his parents had made their way straight to bed, but he was unsure if Phoenix had even decided to come home tonight. Kieran limped up the stairs. Although the pain had eased over the course of the walk home, ascending the stairs placed strain on the muscles of his groin. As he approached his bedroom door, he saw a streak of light emerge from the bathroom as a towelled silhouette emerged and then jumped in surprise. He quickly recognised his damp-haired sister, who was frozen in surprise, not having expected to encounter him in the dark. Her shocked expression quickly turned to disappointment as she shook her head.

"Phoenix.."

As if she was disinterested in what he had to say, she turned away from him to enter her room, but something compelled her to wait at the entrance of the door at the very last moment. "What?"

Kieran took a deep breath. "You didn't need to kick me. I was just trying to do something nice for you."

"Well you ruined my birthday," she said, walking into her room and closing the door behind her.

Kieran sighed as he entered his own room and sat on his bed. A part of him wanted to apologise for the sake of peace, but he was too stubborn. As far as he was concerned, she had ruined her own birthday. He figured the best course of action would be for everyone to get some sleep and then make amends in the morning. Kieran quickly removed both his white t-shirt and the long-sleeved black shirt in a single movement. As soon as he prepared to lie down in his bed, he could hear the sound of angry metal music blaring from the next room.

"Bloody hell, Phoenix," he muttered to himself. He waited in his bed for a few minutes, hoping that she would eventually turn the music down once she had changed and got ready for bed. However, when the music continued to blast at full volume with no sign of reducing, he stormed out of his room towards hers and knocked on the door three times. "Phoenix, turn it down, will you?"

There was no response. He knocked again, yet to no avail. The music must have been too loud for her to have heard him. Filled with frustration, Kieran turned her door handle and pushed it open.

"Turn the music down, for fuck's sake!" he shouted, loud enough for her to hear him over the sound of her music.

Kieran immediately regretted his decision to enter the room. He stood there, eyes wide in surprise at the sight before him. Phoenix was dancing around in a circle with a smile on her face and her eyes closed, her body glistening wet in her nude form, her towel discarded on the floor. Her smile quickly faded when she opened her eyes and found her brother standing there in awe. She jumped, nearly screaming as she scrambled to pick up the towel. A moment passed before Kieran turned his head and stretched his arm out in front of him, blocking the sight of his sister's body. Once she managed to wrap herself up in the towel, she picked her phone up off the bed and turned the volume down.

"Oh, stop trying to act so innocent," she said. "I haven't got anything that you haven't already seen." Although her words appeared nonchalant, she was unable to hide the shakiness of embarrassment in her voice. She crossed her arms, an effort to make sure the towel stayed covering her front side.

"Well, this is completely different," he said, lowering his hand once he realised she was covered up. "You're not one of my 'skanks', are you? This would be like you seeing me naked." He faked a retching sound to exaggerate the disgust his sister would likely have seeing him in the nude. He then laughed to ease the tension, letting her know that he was only teasing her. "Not that there would be anything left to see. I think your kick earlier completed flattened everything. I'm going to have to make sure nothing is broken now." He chuckled lightly again before turning to the door and opening it, before pausing to look back at her with a soft nod. "Look, enjoy the rest of your night, but please, Phee, keep the music at a low level, yeah?"

Phoenix opened her mouth to say something but he was gone before she could reply. She stood there, finding herself lost in thought about the image he had given her. Kieran fondling his manhood to check for injuries. She thought about it for perhaps a moment too long as she found herself frowning and shaking her head aggressively. "Ewww... no." She reached for her phone again as she thought instead about his request. It was her birthday and she was going to do whatever she wanted. She turned the music back up again and laid down on her bed, singing along to the songs as she scrolled through her social media.

Kieran had barely made it back to his bed, when he heard that Phoenix had completely ignored his last request and turned the music back to full blast. He headed straight back to her room with a groan, pounding on the door. "Shut up!"

Kieran groaned and made his way down the stairs, deciding it would be easier to avoid the music altogether. From downstairs, the blaring bass was at least somewhat muted. He was surprised that neither of his parents had any complaints about the music, but he knew that his parents were both pretty deep sleepers who only woke up to movement, so he figured they had already gone to bed. As he reached the downstairs hallway, his grumbling stomach reminded him that he hadn't eaten. Phoenix had kicked off before they had ordered, and he was in dire need of food. He walked to the kitchen and began pulling ingredients from the fridge and wardrobe to whip up something easy on the stove. An 11pm fry up couldn't harm anyone. Just as he had poured oil onto the frying pan, his phone began vibrating. He quickly took his phone out and answered the call on speaker.

"Hey, babe."

"Are you at your parents' house?" He could hear the muffled sound of sobbing through the phone. "I don't like it here alone. Please, baby, can you come back here tonight?"

"I can't, I'm too tired to drive." Kieran quickly feigned a concerned tone. "What's wrong, babe?"

"Your sister. I can't believe she did that. I knew they weren't going to like me but I didn't think it would be that bad."

"Don't worry about her. She has a habit of disliking any girl I fuck with," he said with a chuckle, as he cracked an egg and spilled its contents into the pan. "But she'll come around to you." Aaliyah didn't respond, only sobbing and sniffling for fifteen seconds. "Look, babe, I'll call you back. I've just put on a last minute dinner and I don't want to start a fire."

Kieran hung up the phone without waiting for his girlfriend to say her goodbyes. He noticed that he had several missed calls and unread messages from her in the last couple hours. He decided to sift through the messages to see if there was anything moderately important as he waited for the eggs to fry. It was then that he realised Phoenix was standing in the kitchen doorway, dressed in pink yoga shorts and a Nirvana tank top. He wondered if she had heard his conversation.

"Maybe I dislike them because they're probably out there fucking other guys at the same time," she said, quickly confirming that she had been listening. She made her way to the fridge and pulled out a carton of apple juice. "I'm not changing my mind about her just because she's upset about it. Frankly, I don't care."

"What makes you think Aaliyah's fucking other guys?" he questioned her.

"I already told you, she's a skank," she said sharply. "Girls can tell these things, especially me, and it's pretty obvious you have a type. Skanks and sluts."

"I disagree with that," he replied, frowning as he thought about it.

"Yeah, of course you would, you don't see it," Phoenix said. He watched her as she poured the apple juice out into a small glass. "I shouldn't expect someone as short-sighted as you to see it, to be honest."

Kieran sighed. "I think I see things just fine."

"Do you? Because you didn't seem to have the foresight to realise it might just be a stupid idea to introduce your latest skank to your family on your sister's birthday."

"Oh."

"And not just any birthday. Her eighteenth birthday. You know, the big one."

"Okay, I get it."

"You know, the one where it's not supposed to be about anyone else," she said, slamming the carton down into the counter. "Are you a dumbass?" She paused as if she was waiting for an answer, before quickly interjecting. "No, you're dumber than a dumbass. Even a dumbass would know how dumb that would be."

Kieran didn't respond.

"Sorry, I guess I didn't know how important your future ex was. Maybe it's my fault for not sharing my big day."

"Alright!" he snapped, but he quickly softened his approach. "I'm sorry, alright? I wasn't thinking."

"You think?" She forced a sarcastic laugh before sipping on her drink and then looking at him. "Maybe you should start thinking with your mind and not what's in your pants."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Um, maybe Bethany? Nice ass, no brains. Ring a bell? And what about that Jessie girl? I mean, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if sucking dick was her only purpose in life."

"Give it a break," Kieran said, unsure whether to laugh at the silliness of her comments or to reprimand her for her rudeness. "Aaliyah's a smart girl. She goes to college, you know."

"Whatever," she said, as she finished her juice and then poured herself a second glass.

They stood there in silence for a moment, a silence only broken by the hushed sound of her music still playing upstairs and the sizzling of the eggs on the pan.

"Just so you know," she said, crossing her arms and breaking the silence. "I didn't mean to hurt your little friend. I was just annoyed."

"Being annoyed is not a good enough excuse to..." Kieran frowned as he crossed his arms too. "What on earth gives you the impression that my friend is so little?"

Phoenix's lips curled into a smirk when she realised that her choice of words had unwittingly created an opportunity to annoy him. "I have no reason to think otherwise. As far as I'm aware, your little friend is exactly that. Little."

"For the record, I inspected it myself and everything is intact," he joked as he shifted over to the frying pan to check on the eggs. "In fact, just as fantastic as ever. You're lucky, I would have had to kill you."

She didn't know how to respond to that. The image of Kieran checking his dick for injuries reappeared in her mind. She shrugged her shoulders as she thought of a comeback. "Did you do your inspection with a microscope?"

Kieran was about to retort something when his phone began to buzz. Phoenix set her glass on the counter and then, without warning, snatched his phone off the side, ran towards the sliding doors then out into the darkness of the garden. Kieran followed her outside but she had already found her way to the other side of the pool, giggling as she presumably listened to Aaliyah crying and begging for him to come and see her.

"Phee, that's not funny."

He followed her around the pool and then back into the kitchen again. He wasn't particularly entertained or concerned that she had grabbed his phone, but as it was her birthday and she seemed to be enjoying the moment, he decided to play along. Once they reached the living room, he didn't enter, simply leaning against the frame of the door. She was stood in the middle of the room with a grin on her face as she waved the phone at him.

"Don't worry, she hung up," Phoenix said. "Though there's probably a guy on her way to her place right now. In fact, it sounded like someone was trying to stay quiet in the background."

"You're wrong, you know," he said as he folded his arms. "About Aaliyah."

"Maybe I am," she said, lowering the phone, smirking. "About Aaliyah."

He paused. "You're wrong about me too."

"I stand by what I said," she said with a laugh. "I think you're little."

He smiled now, shaking his head. "I would prove it to you right now but I don't want you to die of surprise. Let's just say, most girls gag on me before halfway."

She hummed. "No, I think you're quite little, and it's obvious you don't want me to see because..." Her voice trailed off as she repeated the mock retching and gagging noises that he had made earlier, before giggling to herself. "Well... I'd bet most girls gag before entry."

"Bet," he said bluntly. She was unsure if his words were spoken in resignation or if he was suggesting to put that bet on the line.

The idea of him proving it to her right now made her pause in her tracks. She was still laughing, but it was slowly softening into a nervous smile. Several images flashed through her mind about how exactly he was going to prove it. She realised that she hadn't respond for too long, and just about managed to say, "Sure thing." She shrugged her shoulders, feigning defeat, and then made her way over to him to hand his phone back to him. As his hand made contact with his phone, she paused and glanced down at his crotch and back up into his eyes, and then pushed past him into the hallway.

"By the way, I learned to control my gagging reflexes," she said with a smile, before skipping up the stairs towards her room.
