It was our neighbor Teddy, who had been seeing mom a few months ago. Or rather, they had gone on a few dates, and he had spent the night once or twice.
J: "Shit! You scared me!"
T: "Sorry! That wasn't intentional. I saw you heading to the basement, so I thought I'd quickly say hello. How's it going?"
J: "Oh, everything's fine. And you?"
T: "All good in the hood"
T: "How's your mom doing?"
J: "Uh, good, I think. I was actually going down to the basement to check on her now. Want to come along?"
I immediately notice a shift in his gaze.
T: "Hmm, do you think she'll be okay with that?"
J: "Yeah, yeah, it should be fine."
Teddy has been having a tough time lately since he used to help out a lot before, but after mom broke up with him and the "new guys" moved in, he's kept his distance. You can probably guess he's not exactly a big fan of mom's decision to take in these young men.
While we were chatting outside, I could hear a lot of noise coming from inside. I also thought I heard some boxes being dragged along the ground.
Once inside the basement, I heard a lot of talking coming from the direction of our storage room. We moved towards the noise more quickly. As soon as we took the final turn in the basement maze, I saw mom, Moe, and Kevin standing around all the things they had just carried out of the storage room.
S: "I told you to be careful with the boxes, or you might get seriously hurt!"
She says this softly and kindly. It was probably mom who was shouting earlier, most likely when one of the boxes either fell on her or on her small feet, which had recently been subjected to a long pedicure session. They were also painted red, if I remember correctly.
M: "Sorry, didn't see you."
S: "No problem, just focus more next time. I don't want to break my toes."
M: "Mmmm, okay."
At the end of the sentence, she gently strokes his cheek with her small hands until she notices me and Teddy. Quickly, her hands pull away.
S: "My son finally decided to come down and help his mom after all!"
She walks quickly towards me to give me a hug, but before she reaches me, I notice that she is very sweaty, which might be due to all the things they've been hauling. At the same time, Kevin has his back to us and is doing something. He's holding a gray towel, which he quickly tosses into the storage room.
J: "Just wanted to check how things are going, and Teddy also came to help if needed."
Mom hugs me.
