I was in class listening to the geography teacher droning on about cloud types when the door opened and the school secretary came in and had a word with teacher. They exchanged words and then the secretary came over to me.
"Hello Lisa, can you come with me to the office please."
Odd, I hadn't done anything wrong as far as I could tell, not anything that anyone would know about that is for sure. I followed her to the headmaster's office, and she knocked and we entered. My Uncle Jeremy was there with Mr Arbuckle the headmaster. Uncle Jeremy was Mum's brother.
"Hello Lisa," my uncle said.
"Please sit down," Mr Arbuckle said.
"Lisa," Uncle Jeremy said, "I have some sad news. There was a car accident, with a lorry on the M62. I am sorry but both of your parents died."
Oh. Well that was a shit. I can't say I was close to them, I had spent virtually all my life in boarding schools. Dad was something in the government and was abroad a lot, so, it was Boarding school for me whilst Mum and Dad were in various differing parts of the world. I usually only saw them at Christmas, more often than not I was one of just a couple of students at school when term had finished.
I didn't say anything, what could I say?
"I have spoken with the headmaster," Uncle Jeremy said, "and we think it is best if you stay here until the end of the school year, you will be eighteen by then and you can decide what you want to do. Your parent's will has you as a ward of mine until you are twenty one and then you come into your funds and can do what you want."
"Okay," I said. It meant nothing to me, I didn't know my parents, my now dead parents, I hardly knew Uncle Jeremy, he used to be there at the Christmas times that I spent with my parents. I didn't call it home, whatever school I was at was home, not where my parents lived.
I sat there trying to remember what my parents looked like, and I really couldn't. I had a recent photo of them in my dorm, but unless I looked at it, I wouldn't be able to describe them. How odd.
"Do you want some time, Lisa," Headmaster asked, "You can be excused class for the rest of the day if you need. I know this must be a shock."
"No Headmaster," I replied, "I shall go back to classes thank you."
"I shall pick you up at the end of the school year," Uncle Jeremy said, "in the meanwhile, just phone me if you need anything."
"Okay Uncle Jeremy," I said, and the secretary took me back to the class room and I took my seat and realised that I had hardly missed any of the details on clouds, lucky me.
The school year droned on, I took my exams, passed them as expected and then it was time to pack my things and go with Uncle Jeremy. As we girls all mustered awaiting our pick-ups, I said goodbye to the girls I had sort of been friendly with, but we didn't exchange details or numbers, we would go our separate ways.
Uncle Jeremy appeared out of the throng of parents and guardians and came up to me and put his arms around me and hugged. That felt strange, no one ever did that, I wasn't sure how to respond.
"Right then Lisa, how are you, how have you been, Headmaster kept me informed of your progress, and I must say that you seem to have done very well. You can probably have your pick of university."
"Thank you Uncle Jeremy, I haven't decided. I seem to have been at school ever since I was four, I think I want some freedom, perhaps take a year out."
"Of course, of course. Come on, let's get your bags in the car and head off."
"I only have the one bag Uncle," I said. Basically, all I had was school uniform, I hadn't been anywhere to need anything else. I had one smart non uniform dress that I wore when I went home at Christmas, and that was about it.
"Goodness, well, tomorrow then, I think we need to take you shopping and buy you some outfits, you won't be needing school uniform for a start."
It took about four hours to get back to Yorkshire to Uncle Jeremy's house, it seemed quite large, in a small housing development on the edge of town. Uncle opened the house and ushered me in.
"I have a key for you, you can come and go as you wish," he said handing me a key which I presumed was for the front door. "The alarm code is your birthday, so easy to remember, you just put the numbers in and press set on your way put, or unset on your way in. Okay?"
"Yes Uncle."
"You can just call me Jeremy if you prefer, Uncle sounds so childish, and you are a grown woman now."
"Okay Jeremy." Grown woman, sounded so odd, yes I was over eighteen now, but that birthday just passed whilst I was at school, as with all my birthdays it was not celebrated, it simply happened. I was over eighteen, Woo Hoo.
"Come on, let me take you up to what will be your bedroom, you can settle in, and tomorrow we will go to the White Rose shopping centre and buy you a load of clothes. I am guessing that you are a size ten, but we will find out tomorrow."
I followed Jeremy upstairs into a wonderfully large room, it had a double bed, wardrobes, drawers, its own bathroom, it was amazing, I didn't have to share it with anyone.
"Put your towels in the laundry basket which is on the landing once a week and I will wash them, same with any of your clothes. Once you have settled in, we will work out what you can do to help around the house, probably the laundry will become your job, but we can ease you into that. Is that okay?"
