The nurse walked in the little room where Rhonda and her son, Kelly, were waiting.
"It was a false positive," the nurse said.
"A what?" asked Rhonda, not immediately comprehending what she had said.
"A false positive," repeated the nurse. "We've ran your bloodwork and you are not pregnant."
Rhonda and Kelly stared at each other. Kelly saw a mixture of relief and disappointment on his mother's face. It mirrored the feelings that had suddenly overwhelmed him.
"I'm not going to have a baby," Rhonda said, as if to confirm it.
"No ma'am. There is no doubt; you are not pregnant. I'm sorry if this is bad news for you and your husband," the nurse said as she looked at Kelly.
"Oh, he's not my husband. This is my son."
The nurse had a puzzled look on her face as she stared down at Kelly and Rhonda's hands intertwined together. She gave the paperwork to Rhonda and left the room. Rhonda turned to Kelly and spoke softly.
"I don't know what I'm feeling right now."
"Me either," replied Kelly.
"I'm kind of at a loss," she said, standing up. Kelly stood up as well and put his arms around her. Rhonda was 5'4" with long, thick dark hair. She was slender and in great shape for a woman in her early forties.
"All I know is I love you," he said, pulling her close. She laid her head on his chest.
"I love you too, honey. I don't know whether to celebrate or cry."
"Let's go home," said Kelly. "We'll figure it out and get through this."
Rhonda and Kelly had fallen passionately in love with each other. Hoping to take their relationship to the next level, Rhonda seduced him on his twentieth birthday. It had worked and their forbidden love affair was in full bloom when Rhonda took a pregnancy test that showed positive. They had resolved that they were going to have a baby, but now they were both torn emotionally with the news of it not being true. They talked over dinner. Rhonda's long, gorgeous hair was down and she was wearing a white blouse and blue slacks. Kelly was wearing a button up shirt and nice jeans; the same clothes they were wearing at the doctor's office.
"I'm too old to be having kids anyway," Rhonda said, taking a sip of wine.
"No your not," Kelly shot back at her. " I know you don't mean that. We were both looking forward to having a baby. You're the best mom in the world, remember?"
Rhonda smiled, remembering the shirt he had bought her that read WORLD'S BEST MOM on it. "Yeah, I guess I was. I've never had anyone who knew me better than you. You're so sweet. I can't imagine having any other man in my life other than you." Rhonda gazed into Kelly's brown eyes that were so similar to hers. "I don't want anything to change. If we get pregnant, then so be it."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes I am," Rhonda said confidently.
They continued chatting while cleaning the kitchen and doing the dishes. "Oh, I forgot to tell you with all the drama going on around here, but I might have to fly out to California for a few days for work. It's one of those shitty situations where the bank might need me there in person."
Kelly felt his stomach drop. He hated it when his mom had to leave town for business. "When will you find out for sure?"
"In the next day or two; don't give me that look. You know I hate it just as much as you. Believe me, if I had my way I'd take you with me on every business trip I go on, but it's just not possible."
While standing at the sink, Rhonda looked up at the clock. "Oh shit! I didn't know it was that late. I've got to get to bed."
Knowing she may be leaving soon, Kelly was overcome with the desire to be close with his mother. He walked up behind her, pulled her hair back and started kissing her neck. She closed her eyes and let out a soft moan.
"It's not too late is it?" Kelly whispered as he moved his lips up to her ear. Rhonda giggled.
"No," she said, "it's not."
Kelly finished cleaning up while his mom got ready for bed. He walked into the dimly lit bedroom to find his mother lying on the bed wearing a pink silk nightie. She stood up and unbuttoned his shirt; letting it fall to the floor. He undid his jeans and also kicked off his socks and shoes. He was standing naked in front of his mom. They kissed deeply.
"I love you Momma," said Kelly.
